Traralgon Junior School

From the Head of Traralgon Junior School,
Ms Tracey King.

Term 2 began with an ANZAC Day service to remember the legacy of the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who rowed towards the shores of Gallipoli and into history on 25 April 1915. Our Year 6 Student Leaders Isabella Slocombe and Araan Patel also represented our Junior School at the Traralgon Commemorative Service and laid a wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of our school.  The first few days of term were all about discussing the importance of ANZAC Day, the ANZAC spirit and how we can learn from history.
There was great excitement as we eagerly watched the live streaming of Phoebe Balcombe’s State Swimming Championship races.  Congratulations to Phoebe for her fabulous efforts and achievements. Phoebe swam in butterfly and backstroke events placing third and fourth respectively. This is an outstanding achievement for Phoebe and wonderful results reflecting her determination, commitment and talent.

Congratulations to Siena Rikken and Stella O’Mara who represented St Paul’s at the recent Regional Tennis Championships. Both girls played hard and with determination and can be very proud of their achievements being ranked in the top eight players for their age group in our region. The day was enjoyable and exciting as the girls completed round robin matches and finished in the quarter finals.

This week we celebrated the St Paul’s Traralgon Campus 20th Anniversary with a special service and gathering. Along with our Junior and Secondary students, it was wonderful to see a number of past teachers and foundation families in attendance and to hear some stories about the development of the campus over the past twenty years. Each student received a special Anniversary badge and a whole campus photograph was taken outside near the bulldozer that will soon be digging and preparing groundworks for our new Futures Building.

We enjoyed a lovely Mother’s Day Evening event with many families participating in special activities together. Many thanks to our teachers for hosting the evening and to Mrs Jayne Price for her organisation.  Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to celebrate and share gratitude with the women who have helped us become who we are. Not everyone is able to or wants to celebrate a traditional Mother’s Day and for some families, the day can be difficult and bring reminders of loss and grief.  In acknowledgment of all the different types of families and their needs, we hope everyone is able to acknowledge the special women who are a part of your families and who contribute in positive ways to your lives whether they are mums, nannas, aunties, sisters or friends.
Our FOSP group have been very busy organising our Mother’s Day raffle and stall and I thank all parents involved. A special thankyou in particular to Sue Magee who has been able to coordinate some beautiful prizes and gifts.  The following local businesses have supported our school with donations and lovely gifts and we acknowledge their generosity and encourage our St Paul’s families to support these traders where possible.

Throughout 2022, we will be working closely with ‘The Resilience Project’ to support the wellbeing of our school community. The Resilience Project delivers emotionally engaging programs and provides evidence-based, practical strategies to build resilience. Our Partnership Program consists of online presentations and weekly lessons for students, professional development for staff, and Parent & Carer Hub for our parent and carer community. Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing the Parent & Carer Hub with you. The videos are 5-10 minutes long and will walk through the key pillars of resilience: Gratitude, Empathy & Mindfulness. You will hear stories and be introduced to activities to show how these strategies can support our children’s learning and development, and also support you as parents and carers.  This program is an important part of our school’s effort to look after the mental health of our community.

View the first presentation of the series here: Part 1: Meet Hugh and learn about The Resilience Project: https://theresilienceproject.com.au/parent-and-carer-hub-hugh/

In this presentation, Hugh shares a personal experience about his sister’s battles with Mental Illness.
Please note: This video contains a story about an Eating Disorder that may be triggering. Please consider this before watching. For mental health resources and support information, visit The Resilience Project’s Support Page.

Class Updates

Prep
The Prep students have settled into Term 2 well and have nearly learnt how to write every letter of the alphabet and the unique sound each one makes. We have five more letters to go! Students have explored what important features are in a sentence and have been learning how to write sentences, provided by the teacher, carefully on the lines using the correct formation and sizing of letters. They have also been focusing on using spaces between each word. Some students have even attempted to write their own sentence using an Upper case letter at the start, spaces between the words and a full stop at the end.
In Maths, we have been developing our ability to look at a group of objects and knowing how many are there without counting them one by one as well as using directional language to describe the location of items or to follow simple instructions of where to put an item. Students enjoyed listening to the story Rosie’s walk and created a map using the different locations and actions of the characters. We are also focusing on numbers up to 20, focusing on how to write and read teen numbers and identifying the number before or after a given number.

During our Wellbeing sessions with the students, we have begun our Resilience Program, focusing on labelling feelings and how our body responds. We have also begun our Protective Behaviour sessions and have explored the ways we can show respect towards others and to not use differences between ourselves and others as a way of putting others down.

The students have been exploring what makes a family and the different types of families in our community. We have also been discussing the different members of their family and what makes them special.

Year 1
The Year 1 students have started the term with lots of enthusiasm and excitement.  We were really impressed with how respectful our Year 1s were while attending our ANZAC Day service on Tuesday 26 April.  In class we read and discussed ANZAC Ted by Belinda Landsberry and Lest We Forget by Kerry Brown and learnt what ANZAC meant.  This was a good introduction to our history topic this term which is focusing and comparing the past to the present.

Week 2 was a busy week with the students attending the 20th Anniversary Service of the school on Wednesday 4 May.  They listened and were respectful to all the people that spoke.  They then enjoyed a whole school photo in front of the bulldozer, which was photographed by a drone. On Thursday we began our Mother’s Day celebrations by enjoying a lovely evening making bracelets and pampering our mothers, nannas and special friends with massages and special manicures.  On Friday students were then given the opportunity to buy a special gift at the school stall and then made special cards to go with them.

Year 2
It has been a wonderful start to Term 2 for Year 2 students who enjoyed making and eating ANZAC biscuits to commemorate ANZAC day.  It was a fun experience gathering data from the school car parks in order to create a graph to show the popularity of car colours. We also began our history unit of work for this term and have spent time this week defining traditions and categorising them into family, school, Australian and world traditions. We had our first Resilience Project session with a focus on gratitude and identifying things we are grateful for.  There was a buzz of excitement in the classrooms as we prepared something special for Mother’s Day.

Year 3
This week we wrote a persuasive letter to Ms King about what we thought could be changed in the school to make the school a better place. We had lots of ideas which were based on therapy dogs in the classrooms, a fence around the school and ways to keep the school free from rubbish just to name a few. Estelle Agustin from 3C stated, “Secondly I recommend something like SRC but for making the school cleaner and a better place for kids to be in with no rubbish around the School.” Harrison Hogan from 3C stated, “Firstly I think we should have therapy pets to focus better so you can spell and write better than you could without them.” Vishvak Kancherla from 3C stated, “Have you ever thought that too many people are entering our school? As half of the public thinks, it’s a park, so we should have a school gate.” Cassie Beckman from 3B stated, “Concluding, therapy dogs are the best! They’re adorable, they could help nervous people, and they make people new friends! We need more therapy dogs!” Neave O’Mara stated, “My second reason is when kids are having a hard time at school a therapy dog could turn faces a bit brighter!”

Year 4
In Year 4, we are learning about the journey of the First Fleet, arriving at Sydney Cove and their encounter with the Aboriginal people. Students enjoyed investigating what life was like as a convict and the work they might have done in the colonies.  In Literacy sessions, we have been identifying the author’s point of view and have examined ways to argue our own point of view.   In Maths, we are building on our knowledge of statistics and probability through playing number games where students are required to tally results and display the data using a variety of graphs.

Year 5
This week students have had a strong focus on learning about the different techniques used in persuasive writing. Students practised using rhetorical questions, exaggeration, the rule of three, humour and emotive language. Everyone has absolutely loved sharing their viewpoints about the different topics and trying to convince their classmates that their opinion is correct.

Here are some samples of writing based on the topic ‘Books are better than movies/Movies are better than books’

‘Do you enjoy being told what characters look like? Are you sick of getting told off for watching too much TV? Books will give you an extensive vocabulary.’ – Sophie
‘I strongly agree that you should stop wasting all of your money on books that you will only read once.’ – David
‘Imagine having to read those giant, long and tricky words which will make your brain fall out because of how boring they are.’ – Frankie
‘Do you really want some poor and helpless animals to lose their habitat because of a book?’ – Nand
‘Who would waste their time staring at a bunch of words when you could just relax and watch something entertaining?’ – Dheaia
‘I’m personally tired of reading books and spilling food which ruins the book, but if you spill food while watching a movie, nothing gets wrecked and its easy to clean up.’ – Ari

Year 5 students have also spent time practising NAPLAN style questions which included Numeracy, Reading Comprehension and Language Conventions. All tasks were tackled with a positive attitude and students really understood that practising the NAPLAN style questions would help build their confidence for Week 3.

Year 6
It is always busy in Year 6 and the beginning of Term 2 has been no different!

Year 6 students began to explore The Resilience Project and engaged in activities centred around defining gratitude and the things we can be grateful for in our lives.

During Literacy, students have continued to explore figurative language, with a focus on similes and metaphors. In Maths, students have engaged in lessons where they have learned further about 2D and 3D shapes, nets and lines of symmetry. In Integrated Studies, Year 6 students have begun learning about the systems of government in Australia and are beginning to compare Australia’s government and laws to that of other countries around the world.

Music
Music classes have been busy since the start of this term.  Prep students have continued to keep a steady beat while singing.  They also had a flashback to Kinder when we had fun singing ‘Mr Clicketty Cane’!  Year 1 students have started learning about the music stave:  they learnt the notes lower on the stave have a low pitch while those notes higher up on the stave have a high pitch.  Year 2 students are coming along with great guns with their String playing.  They have learnt the names of all the open strings on their instrument and have started using their 1st finger (in string playing 1st finger is the pointer finger) on the D string to play the note E.  More updates will be posted on the Year 2 Parent Page on MyStPauls, along with the backtracks and sheet music of the pieces they are learning.

Visual Art
Year 2 students are working on two projects this term:

•  Cartoon people in pastel with watercolour backgrounds.
•  Caterpillars on tissue paper backgrounds.

PREPS IN ACTION

Prep classes are learning about Author’s Message in library this term. The author’s message is the reason why the story was written. It could be to entertain, inform, or persuade. After listening to BUSTING by Aaron Blabey, Prep Price decided that Blabey’s message for why he wrote Busting was to make them laugh.

After listening to the story the Preps then redesigned the books cover to make it FUNNIER!

From the Head of Traralgon Secondary School,
Mrs Leonie Clark

I hope that everyone enjoyed a lovely Easter holiday and that you were able to spend some fabulous time with loved ones making some precious family memories. Speaking of memories, a heartfelt thankyou to our Friends of St Paul’s (FOSP) parents and guardians who so kindly organised the annual Easter Egg Hunt for our secondary students on the last day of Term 1.

Darcy Ellen finding the Golden Egg and winning the FOSP Easter Egg Prize.

The morning commenced with a delightful Easter service facilitated by our very own artist and Chaplain Lynton Allan who shared his artistic talents while telling the tale of a very rebellious young kookaburra who left home in a flurry of anger and bitterness. Our young ‘punky’ and rather rebellious kookaburra thought he knew best but was too ashamed to admit that he wanted and needed to return home to the nest and the support of his loving family. The message about unconditional love and forgiveness was timely and a valuable reminder. We know our students and children will make mistakes, as do we as adults, but with it is important for us all to continue to demonstrate forgiveness, to warmly celebrate difference and to embrace diversity within our community at St Paul’s.

TRARALGON COMMUNITY ANZAC SERVICE, Monday 25 April
On the final day of the Easter holidays and in the splendid autumn sunshine Ananya Philips and Nicholas Fenech proudly represented our campus at the ANZAC Day service in Traralgon. Accompanied by Tracey King our Head of Junior School and Mrs Sandra Timmer-Arends Head of Years 9 and 10, Year 10 students and Traralgon Secondary School Captains Nicholas and Ananya reverently laid a wreath at the base of the cenotaph in Traralgon.

ANZAC DAY Service, Nicholas and Ananya.

Traralgon Secondary ANZAC Service, Tuesday 26 April
One Tuesday 26 April our St Paul’s secondary students participated in their own ANZAC Day service under the flags at the front of the school. The moving service was presented by our students who understood the significance of the ceremony and who took their time to deliver their contributions with respect and compassion for those who have given so much in service to their country. Appreciation is extended to all students who generously presented speeches, performances, and assisted with organisation on the day. The ANZAC ceremony was exceptionally moving, and it was a privilege and honor to hear it delivered by our accomplished student leaders from Year 7 to Year 10 with warmth and admiration for all who have served.

20th Anniversary Celebrations, Traralgon Campus
On Wednesday we celebrated the highly anticipated 20th Anniversary of the Traralgon Campus of St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School.  Many past parents and staff joined Mr Cameron Herbert Principal, Bishop Richard Treloar, Archdeacon Clem Watts, former Principal Richard Prideaux and the current Chair of the school board Darren Jennings to celebrate the occasion. We also enjoyed reuniting with many former staff members and foundation families who are and have been instrumental in the growth of the Traralgon Campus.  We were delighted that they were able to accept our invitation to be present to generously commemorate this milestone.

Our students were presented with a commemorative badge to wear to the service on their blazers as a precious keepsake to acknowledge the significance of the 20th Anniversary. At the conclusion of the service all those present gathered outside for a unique photo opportunity. We cannot wait to see the image of our community from an aerial perspective in the coming days.

Included below is the opening prayer from the service which encapsulates the celebratory nature of the service, acknowledges the contributions of so many in our community, as well the values upon which our remarkable school has been established.

Opening Prayer (20th Anniversary Celebrations St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, Traralgon)
Everlasting God,
As we gather as a school community, we give thanks for the founding of this campus and for the many blessings we have received over the course of our 20 year history. We acknowledge the commitment of those who worked so hard to establish a campus in Traralgon and we give thanks for the increasing generations of staff, students, and families, who have continued to uphold the identity and vision of St Paul’s and our hopeful future.
As we look forward, may our School strive to be a place where people of wisdom, integrity, respect, and compassion are found. Amen.

Troy Aitken reads a prayer for the School while Alice den Houting awaits her turn to share her prayer.

Ananya Philips and Nicholas Fenech, Traralgon Secondary School Captains and official guests gather at the conclusion of the service.

Year 9 and Year 10 Examinations
We don’t have long until our Years 9 and 10 students will sit their end of semester examinations. It is important that students take little steps each day towards the revising of content. It can take a little while for students to work out the best study method for the retention of information and there are certainly a plethora of ‘experts’ prepared to give advice in this space.

The following blog has some outstanding research-based techniques and advice that may assist students to understand some of the proven techniques to help make their study more effective in the coming weeks.

Year 7 Homework
After a lovely term of no homework in order to support a gentle transition to secondary school, all Year 7 students are now expected the complete 30 minutes of homework afterschool. Students should be using their diaries to record their homework each day. Students are advised to set up a study space that is reserved for homework. Homework in Year 7 may include completing assessment tasks, finishing some questions, revising for tests or completing their wider reading. All students from Year 7 up are warmly invited to attend Homework Club each Thursday afterschool from 3:20 pm to 4:20 pm in Room 2 to help establish this routine.

DOES MY CHILD HAVE MATHS HOMEWORK?

“Does my child have maths homework’ is a question that many parents ask. The answer is YES, always. Working through maths homework should be a nightly routine for most students. The amount and type of maths homework will vary depending on the year level and time of term; however, students are strongly encouraged to establish a regular routine of completing maths homework each evening. There is a strong positive correlation between students who do well in VCE mathematics with students who regularly revise their mathematics classwork.

Mathsonline Weekly Revision Tasks
All Years 7 to 10 students should complete their Mathsonline Weekly Revision Task for homework each week, with the task only taking approximately 15 minutes to complete. We do like to see our students achieve an 80 per cent score for each of these tasks. However, we understand that some students may need to repeat the task and seek assistance from their teacher when the task score is below 80 per cent.

Mathsonline Lessons
Additionally, to the Mathsonline Weekly Revision Task, teachers will often set specific tasks/lessons related to a topic, unit or concept. Each task has a tutorial video that explains the mathematical concept(s) and questions that each student can complete to test their understanding.

Progress Quiz and Chapter Review: Years 7 to 10A Cambridge
Each chapter of the Cambridge textbooks has a Progress Quiz and Chapter Review where students can answer questions relating to the unit. Students can utilise these sections for test revision and homework.

Extension Homework
We love it when our students challenge themselves in mathematics. Each teacher has many different ways to help our students go. Students (and perhaps some parents) who are keen for some extra challenge and fun with mathematics, then we encourage you to look at any of the enrichment, modelling, investigation and problems and challenges sections from any Year 7 to 10A Cambridge textbooks.

Reviewing Past Tests and SACs
All students can learn from going through their past tests and SACs, even if a student received 100%. It also provides great revision for Semester 1 or end of year exams. Students can ask their teacher for worked solutions. Students can also add their past tests and SACs to exam notes.

MATHS SUPPORT SESSIONS
Maths support sessions are offered offered every Tuesday and Thursday during lunchtime. Traralgon Secondary also offer afterschool homework club on Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

Students may use these sessions to get assistance with and complete homework tasks, seek an additional lesson on a particular Maths topic or simply work with other students who share a similar love of Mathematics with extension activities provided as required.

These sessions are additional to those already provided by teachers from the Maths Faculty, which occur regularly at nominated lunchtimes.

Happy Learning

DAV C-GRADERS SUCCESSFULLY ASSERT THE NEED FOR FREE MEDICATIONS

On Monday 2 May, the Traralgon Secondary School C-Grade team debated their way to victory against our own Warragul Secondary School, arguing with conviction that Australia should pass regulations that make medications free for all.

With strong scores for matter, manner and method, Nicholas Fenech, Alice Nguyen and Debating Captain, Ananya Philips, capably presented their stance and successfully persuaded the adjudicator that their arguments were strongest.

As always, our Traralgon debating teams conducted themselves professionally and brought passion and enthusiasm to their debating experience.  Thank you to all who participated.

YEAR 7 HISTORY MUSEUM

Our Year 7 students got to be historians for an hour, when they attended their own ‘Year 7 History Museum.’ Students were able to examine some modern and olden day ‘artefacts’ relating to various historical events and time periods.

Wearing gloves, using magnifying glasses and lamps, students undertook a detailed examination of the objects to identify and discover what the artefacts were, and what inferences they could tell us about that period in time.  Artefacts included a rifle shell from Gallipoli, convict made bricks, postcards from the World War II Oflag German Prison Camp, postcards from the Western Front and ancient stone knife.

SPORT NEWS/CLASSROOM NEWS

SEISA Junior Winter Round Robin
Last Thursday, the Traralgon Secondary School hosted the Junior Winter trials. Over eight-five students travelled down from the Warragul Campus to join our eighty-five students. This paved the way for a very arduous task for the coaches to make their final selection. We are very fortunate that thirty-four students were selected and three named as emergencies. Our first round was on Thursday 5 May against Gippsland Grammar.

Preparing to perform a dance movement.

Performing a handstand.

Sport Science and Coaching
As part of the Sport Science and Coaching elective, students are required to plan a coaching session based on the sport they play to teach the rest of the class. So far students have been immersed in dance, cycling and gymnastics. After each session, students provide both positive and constructive feedback to the coach as part of their evaluation as to how their lesson went. Students complete an online coaching course through the Australian Institute of Sport which provides them the tools to deliver their session in a meaningful way as well as provide class managements tips to use.

Warragul Junior School

From the Head of Warragul Junior School,
Mr Rowan van Raay.

Welcome to Term 2 everyone. I hope you were able to enjoy some down time over the break (although it does seem some time ago already!). It is always nice to have a change of pace to recharge.

Welcome
We welcomed two new students and their family to St Paul’s and our Junior School this term. Lucas Perry joins 2W2 while his sister, Alice has commenced in 4W1.

RAT Kits
These will be sent home with students today (eldest in the family) for Weeks 3 and 4 and hopefully this will be the final time. Year 6 students will receive theirs on Monday due to being on camp.

ANZAC Day Service
Junior School students joined together with the Secondary School at the Lone Pine on the first day of term for our ANZAC Day Service.  My thanks to the students who were involved in running the service and to all students who were respectful throughout the service.

Year 5 Camp
Our Year 5 students attended camp at The Ranch at Cape Schanck last week. They enjoyed a range of different activities and the weather was stunning. My sincere thanks to the staff who attended and assisted in helping the students have a wonderful time.

Division Athletics
Well done to the students who competed at the West Gippsland Division Athletics Carnival at the Joe Carmody Athletics Track, Newborough on Tuesday. The majority of students who competed have progressed through to regional, which will be held later in the year. Thanks to Mr Boraston and Mrs Diston who attended and assisted on the day.

Year 6 Camp
Year 6 students enjoyed their camp experience at Camp Coolamatong this week. There was a mixture of weather, however, that did not dampen the students’ enthusiasm. Students participated in sailing, bush cooking, climbing and abseiling, farming, archery, Indigenous education, low ropes, bike orienteering and enjoyed a boat ride to Raymond Island and played beach games at Ocean Grange and went on a koala walk. Thanks to the staff who attended the camp.

Uniform
A reminder that from Monday, students in Years 3 to 6 must wear the winter uniform, including the school blazer to and from school each day (students may wear shorts).

Interactive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural sessions
Our Years 5 and 6 students took part in an Interactive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural session whilst on camp recently. Our Years 2 and 3 students will take part in an Interactive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural day run by Wanyara, Indigenous Education in schools on Tuesday 17 May. Wanyara brings Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander games, art, dance, language, history, ceremonies, songs and stories to schools to help communities understand and embrace an Aboriginal perspective of our country.

Each class in Years 2 and 3 will take part in three activities: Play, Yarn and Paint. These sessions allow our students and staff to gain a greater understanding of First Nations peoples’ culture, values and practices.

Wear Something Blue, Huntington’s Awareness Day
All students are encouraged to ‘wear something blue’ on Thursday 19 May in support of Huntington’s Wear Something Blue on 22 May awareness day. Huntington’s disease (HD) is a progressive, genetic neurological condition that causes deterioration of brain cells resulting in impairment in a person’s physical, cognitive and emotional/psychological functioning. HD is relatively unknown but not rare and its devastating impact remains relatively unknown and/or commonly misunderstood. Our SRC has decided to support this day as a student in our Junior School is currently living with the impacts of HD in his family. Representatives from Huntington’s Victoria will be joining us for the afternoon and we will have a short assembly after lunch where they will explain more about Huntington’s. More information was emailed to families yesterday.

School Photos, Friday 20 May
School photos will be taken on Friday 20 May commencing with sibling photos from 8:30 am. A flyer showing how to register will be emailed to families next week and I ask that families ensure they register for sibling photos.  Parents will order their photos online using their unique image codes that will be issued to all students on 20 May. Registration is simple, just follow the three simple steps on your child’s personalised flyer and remember to add the codes for all your children attending our school. Even if you registered last year, it is important that you do it again this year using your child’s 2022 image code to link their images for the current year with your contact details. When images are ready to view on the webshop, all parents who have registered will be notified by SMS and email. Once registered, please wait for notification that 2022 images are online to view before making your purchase.

Performing Arts Concert, SAVE THE DATE: Thursday 9 June
We are thrilled to be able to go ahead with our Performing Arts Concert at the West Gippsland Arts Centre this year. Due to the limited experience our students have had ‘on the big stage’ over the past couple of years, ALL students will be involved in the Performing Arts Concert this year and we will be holding two shows on Thursday 9 June. Our first show will commence at 5:30 pm and will include all Prep to Year 6 students with our second show commencing at 7:30 pm and will include all Years 1 to 6 students. More information will be sent home very soon.

Warragul Secondary School

From the Acting Head of Warragul Secondary School,
Mr Gordon Oldham.

There is a series of posters that have been on display periodically at St Paul’s over the years and are regularly employed by schools around the world. Produced by a group called Action for Happiness, the messages on the posters straddle the ideologies of growth mindset and positive education.  As a school, we believe in a growth mindset, the power of perseverance, utilising feedback to improve and knowing that the brain is like a muscle which becomes stronger with focused usage.

One of my favourite posters declares, “It helps to know what you’re looking forward to”. It’s a simple message and one which is perfect for students to consider – particularly at a time of hectic assessment, or during social turbulence – but also for adults. No matter what is happening, no matter how we feel in a given moment, there is always something we can look forward to, be it within 24 hours or five years into the future!

“It helps to know what you’re looking forward to”.

And, as a North Melbourne supporter, it has certainly been a favourite mantra of mine – and might be for a few more years! I am looking forward to three premierships between 2025 and 2030…

COVID-19 REMINDERS
As much as society and many of us as individuals are living a life which is not impacted by COVID-19, we are still very COVID-19 conscious. The key impact it can have on the school is the absence of students and staff, who still need to isolate for seven days after a positive test.

The next round of RAT distribution has taken place today and we ask that families maintain regular testing.  We appreciate the efforts made by families to keep students at home if they are showing any symptoms and this has certainly been one of the most effective methods of preventing widespread infection.

We are aware that the beginning of flu season will also have an impact on the community so we will continue to ask students to follow our usual reminders to help stop the spread.

FRIENDS OF ST PAUL’S
Thank you to those who have already responded to the letter earlier this week as we seek to gather momentum once again with Friends of St Paul’s. The aim of the group is to help with existing school events as well as to drive other opportunities for parents to meet and greet and spend time together as a broader community. The meeting is booked for Thursday 26 May at 7.00 pm in the staffroom (enter via main reception) and if you would like to be on the email list or attend online via Zoom, please register interest via goldham@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au

OPEN DAY
We have put the call out to students to join us on Open Day. Students might come in as a tour guide (all year levels invited, led by nine Ambassadors and Prefects) or participate in a club or activity (for example Japanese Culture Club, Sport Aerobics training, rehearsals). There will also be some opportunities for academic revision, aimed particularly at senior students – teachers and Heads of Faculty will gather information regarding activities or revision; Mentors and Heads of Year are collecting the names of tour guides. Students can take part in a range of sessions and we provide them with lunch.

All current families are warmly invited to join us and walk around the school. Many faculties have interactive opportunities and it is another chance for you to meet a range of staff at St Paul’s.

SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS
Family photographs will take place on Friday 20 May, from 8.30 am at the Warragul Junior School Gymnasium. Registration details from Arthur Reed Photography will be sent through at a later date.

A reminder that students who were absent for the School Photographs have an opportunity to have their photo taken on Friday 20 May. The photos will take place at the Junior School and separate contact has been made with families to provide specific details. If you are impacted and have not received contact, please contact Binny via bjslate@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au

NAPLAN
We are grateful to all of the work involved from our staff, led by Ms Alice Zanella (Director of Studies, Middle School) and the IT team in helping oversee an online NAPLAN experience that is as smooth as possible.  Teachers of Years 7 and 9 students have helped show students what to expect but, as always, we do not teach specifically to the NAPLAN testing system; rather, we utilise the results and data patterns to assist with our approach to individual and school-wide teaching.

NAPLAN takes place from 10-12 May (Week 3).

eSAFETY WEBINARS
Please note two posters below regarding some excellent opportunities provided by the Government’s eSafety organisation:

  1. Parental Controls
  2. Safer Online Gaming

Parental Controls Webinar.

The eSafety website has a range of detailed resources which can provide you, and your son or daughter, with valuable information regarding all online matters: www.esafety.gov.au

HEADS OF FACULTY

Chapter Review
The Chapter Reviews in Cambridge textbooks for Years 11 and 12 contain a good mix that helps to deepen our students’ understanding. These questions range from technology-free questions to multiple-choice and extended-response questions, all of which are great for homework and revision.

Cambridge VCE Checkpoints
For our Year 12 students, the Cambridge VCE Checkpoints are an excellent resource to use for homework. The checkpoints incorporate recent official exam questions relating to the VCE study design, providing students with the most up-to-date exam and SAC preparation questions. All our Year 12 students are strongly encouraged to work through these, multiple times throughout the year.

Extension Homework
We love it when our students challenge themselves in mathematics. Each teacher has many different ways to help our students go. Students (and perhaps some parents) who are keen for some extra challenge and fun with mathematics, then we encourage you to look at any of the enrichment, modelling, investigation and problems and challenges sections from any Years 7 to 10A Cambridge textbooks.

Reviewing Past Tests and SACs
All students can learn from going through their past tests and SACs, even if a student received 100 per cent. It also provides great revision for Semester 1 or end of year exams. Students can ask their teacher for worked solutions. Students can also add their past tests and SACs to exam notes.

MATHS SUPPORT SESSIONS
Maths support sessions are offered in RM3 of the Year 9 Centre each Thursday at the end of the school day from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm for Years 10 to 12 students. Students can attend for all or part of each session as required. For our Years 7 to 9 students, we offer Lunchtime Support Sessions every Tuesday during lunchtime in RM3.

From The Maths Faculty

St Paul’s wascompetitive across many of our teams however, with COVID-19 delaying the start of the season, no finals were played, with the team on top of the ladder after five rounds being awarded the title.

Congratulations to the Intermediate Boys Basketball, Intermediate Girls Netball B team and the Senior Boys Tennis B team who were overall champions for Term 1. The Intermediate Girls Netball A team and the Intermediate Boys Cricket team also finished Runners Up for the season.

All students across the semester played exceptionally well and should be proud of their efforts. The Traralgon Campus was buzzing with excitement on Wednesday 4 May as we celebrated the 20th Anniversary Service of St Paul’s in Traralgon. For the first time in a couple of years, we were able to gather as a whole campus, from Prep to Year 10, for this very special occasion. We were delighted to host a large number of special guests including Bishop Richard Treloar, Archdeacon Clem Watts, Mr Darren Jennings (Board Chair) and our wonderful guest speaker, Mr Richard Prideaux, who was Principal of St Paul’s in 2002 when the Traralgon Campus commenced. We were also blessed to have in attendance some of our Foundation staff members at the Traralgon Campus, Foundation families, former Heads of School and former Board Directors.

Following the service, the Traralgon Early Learning Centre joined us for a whole-campus photograph to celebrate the completion of our new Basketball and Netball Complex and the imminent construction of the Futures Centre, preparing us for the years ahead as we expand Traralgon through to Years 11 and 12.

While Traralgon is celebrating 20 years, St Paul’s will also be celebrating 40 years since beginning in Warragul in 1982 at this year’s Whole School Anniversary Service, which is planned for Wednesday 3 August 2022.

AUTUMN LEAVES AND TRADITIONS

Autumn is a beautiful time of year, unless you are the person responsible for raking up the leaves! Our Maintenance team do a wonderful job of keeping our school grounds looking great and so often one of the first things I see if I arrive at school early on an autumn morning is one of the Maintenance staff diligently blowing leaves into neat piles for removal. I have great sympathy for them on windy days. On these days the leaves, freed from their botanical anchors, spread themselves across the school as they ride the breeze, getting into doorways, gutters, and inconvenient corners. Any effort to contain these autumn wanderers is guaranteed to be frustrated as neat piles of leaves are scattered once again to the four corners of the yard by mischievous gusts as soon as your back is turned. I do not envy our maintenance team on these mornings.

There is a sense in which our own experience is not dissimilar to that of the autumn leaf, particularly so for young people. In our highly individualistic Western society, we can be so disconnected from the things that anchor us, the things that give us a sense of place, that we start to resemble autumn leaves on a windy day. Blown from one trend to the next without anything to ground us. While it is normal and healthy for young people to explore and experiment as they establish an identity of their own, it is equally important that they have firm and reliable anchors to hold onto when life gets overwhelming. One of these anchors is tradition.

I will be the first to admit that tradition is an old person’s game and I was very quick to roll my eyes at many of the traditions that shaped my younger years. I would also acknowledge that not all traditions are helpful or healthy. This is not a call for blind adherence to tradition but a reminder that many traditions play a deeper and more important role than we give them credit for. Traditions anchor us, reminding us that we are a part of something bigger, that the actions of others in the past have shaped the present reality we live in and that we in turn are shaping the reality of future generations.

Katharine Rose put it this way in an article published in the Huffington Post, “The world evolves. But the essence of who we are as humans – our struggles, our fears, our needs and desires – has largely remained the same due to the inherent characteristics that define human nature. Tradition, then, seems to be a subtle reminder of this, heightening our awareness of self and others, cultivating a sense of belonging and stability, and acting as a guiding force in our lives and society.” https://allthingsgood.co/2015/04/02/why-tradition-matters/

Psychologist, Donna Rockwell, draws on a popular musical to explain the importance of tradition. “Fiddler on the Roof is the story of a Russian family forced to flee their homeland. In the song Tradition, Tevye, the wise father, says that without our traditions, the community of mankind would lose its grounding. “Because of our traditions,” Tevye sings, “we’ve kept our balance for many, many years … and because of our traditions, every one of us knows who he is and what God expects him to do.”” https://www.psychalive.org/importance-tradition/

Two years of COVID-19 restrictions have deprived us of celebrating and participating in many traditions that we may have previously taken for granted. Annual family gatherings, shared holiday destinations, celebrations of milestones, victories and seasons ending, all have had to be reinvented or have not taken place at all. Likewise, as a school we have missed out on many of the gatherings and rituals that have been part of the St Paul’s tradition for many years. Now that these activities are once again open to us, it is important that we don’t lose those important traditions. Of course there may be some that we leave behind or permanently reinvent – the temporary COVID-19 pause has also given opportunity to reflect on what we really value – but there is also great joy to be found in returning to those familiar events and activities that so shape our lives. It was a real joy to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of our Traralgon Campus this week – a gathering that included singing our School Song, saying our School Prayer and reflecting on the history of the campus. These events may not seem all that exciting to students at the time (a fact which my teenage son is happy to confirm) but they are also the events that tend to stick in their memory. They are also the events that communicate and teach the values which shape us as a school.

Your children may not always be excited about traditions, whether they be family traditions or school traditions, but I encourage you to be thoughtful and intentional in reclaiming traditions you may have lost to COVID-19. Do not underestimate the importance of these rituals, routines and traditions which can be a lifesaving anchor to a young person being buffeted by the winds of social pressure as they seek to chart their own course in life.

“Then we shall no longer be children, carried by the waves and blown about by every shifting wind of the teaching of deceitful people, who lead others into error by the tricks they invent.” (Ephesians 4:14)
