Traralgon Junior School

From the Head of Traralgon Junior School,
Ms Tracey King.

Term 4 has certainly started rolling along with speed!  Students have been settling into routines and enjoying being back onsite with their teachers and classmates.  Our first day of school was exciting as teachers and students happily greeted and welcomed each other back to school.  Teachers dressed up and were dancing and waving as parents dropped their children at school.  It was a red carpet affair for students with excitement and smiles all round.  We had all forgotten how noisy a school is and staff thoroughly enjoyed the squeals, laughter and giggles as students played and chased each other in the gardens and play grounds.  It was just lovely to be back at school.

Returning to learning at school has been a big change on many levels for some students and it is to be expected this will cause some anxiety and worry.  I encourage parents to reach out to classroom teachers, school counsellors or to Mr Battista or myself if there are any concerns about your child’s mental health.  There is a large amount of worthwhile information and useful strategies for parents on our MyStPauls page as well as easy to access resources on many websites such as:
Kids Helpline, PH: 1800 55 1800, https://www.kidshelpline.com.au/

The Term 4 calendar has been updated to reflect COVID-19 restrictions and is available on MyStPauls.  Despite these restrictions, there is much to look forward to this term with some special events and celebrations planned:
•  Today students were involved in a whole school Science Activity Day which will be a selection of hands-on experiments and activities.
•  Next week is Book Week and students are encouraged to dress up as a favourite book character and join in our parade on Tuesday 20 October.  Dress up characters can be simple costumes with items you already have at home.  Please be aware that there is no expectation for ‘fancy’ store bought costumes.  Our intention is to engage students in reading quality literature and to facilitate discussions about books.  Participation is the key for book week.
•  Next Thursday 22 October will be another exciting day at school as students join in a Purple Day Walk within the grounds of the Junior School.  Our Year 6 students have been busy planning and organising this event.
•  Years 3 and 4 students will be visiting the wetlands in Week 4 for a pseudo camp experience including a range of environmental and adventure activities.

October is Dyslexia awareness month and there are many awareness building activities and sessions available for free to parents.  A number of Australian communities are lighting prominent buildings and landmarks red to acknowledge dyslexia.
The word dyslexia comes from the Greek language and means difficulty with words.  Early identification and evidence-based intervention is vital in closing the gap and avoiding the social and emotional issues that can be associated with not being able to read.  Dyslexia affects one in ten school students with twenty per cent of students at risk of reading failure.

Individuals with dyslexia have trouble with reading and spelling despite having the ability to learn.  Individuals with dyslexia can learn, they just learn in a different way.  Often these individuals, who have talented and productive minds, are said to have a language learning difference.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder that is neurological in origin, meaning that it is brain-based.  It is characterised by difficulties with accurate and fluent word reading and by poor spelling and decoding abilities that do not progress as expected with the provision of well-intentioned and targeted intervention.

When children are unable to read and spell with high levels of accuracy, they are more likely to experience problems in reading comprehension.  Difficulties with reading can restrict the development of vocabulary and background knowledge.  Dyslexia occurs on a continuum from mild to severe and no two are alike.  There is no cure for dyslexia since it is a brain based difference, however with appropriate instruction aimed towards their learning needs, most can overcome their literacy difficulties and lead productive lives.

This month Nessy is offering free training for teachers and parents for Dyslexia until the end of October.  This is a fabulous opportunity for parents and teachers to learn more about Dyslexia.  https://www.nessy.com/uk/product/understanding-dyslexia/   Free access code: TEACHME

The course covers:
•  Dyslexia explained
•  Phonological and phonemic awareness
•  Working memory
•  Auditory processing
•  Teaching children with dyslexia
For families with dyslexic children, there is a Victorian Support Group which provides advice, support and assistance. https://www.facebook.com/groups/dyslexiavictoriasupport/   This group is volunteer run and regularly hosts events and webinars to support families and assist in building knowledge and awareness.

The much anticipated premier of the short film ‘MICAL’ was also recently released.  This is a film about a young boy who is struggling to learn to read and write and the challenges his family face.  It is a must watch for parents.   You can view the film here: Silverprince Pictures Youtube Channel. https://rb.gy/2ljwit

Many thanks to our families for their ongoing consideration of school requirements in regard to COVID-19 restrictions.  Your cooperation with the ‘kiss ‘n’ go’ zones and patience with the afternoon car park traffic is very much appreciated.  Please do continue to be mindful of not blocking community traffic at the entrance to the school and ensure your child knows where they are to be collected from each day.  I would like to remind parents to remain in their cars and if you must attend onsite please telephone the office before you arrive to check for instructions.

We have had very little illness so far this term and again I wish to thank all families for their sensible decisions to keep students home when they are unwell.  Teachers are carefully following guidelines, have increased hygiene and cleaning, and are mindful of reducing the risk of spreading illness throughout the school. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

As we have returned to school, teachers have become increasingly aware of how skilled many students have become with their IT skills and have also noticed an increased use of social media apps, gaming and programs.  Across our communities there is constant discussion about the safety of the ever changing digital world for our children.  Our school is hosting a special virtual parent session addressing ‘Parenting in a Digital World’ which will be hosted by an educational expert from the Alannah & Madeline Foundation.  It is an interactive sixty minute conversation via Zoom empowering families with skills and strategies for positive online behaviours and overall digital wellbeing.  This session will deepen your understanding of the online world, social media and gaming with an analysis of the latest trends, risks and research.  I encourage all parents to join us for this parent session.

The meeting can be joined via this link esmart.page.link/stpauls (the link will be active on the night) or alternatively the Meeting ID is 860 2702 9854 with the passcode 09112020.

You can find a series of fact sheets on some of the most popular apps on the MyStPauls Junior School page.  For further information the eSafety Commissioner website is also loaded with terrific resources for parents,  https://www.esafety.gov.au/

Prep
Our Preps continually amaze us with how well they have adapted to the different learning situations they have found themselves in this year.   Everyone has come back eager to learn and share what they know.  We are looking forward to a fun filled last term!

Year 1
Year 1 students have enjoyed returning to school, interacting with their classmates and playing with their friends in our outside play areas.  They have started a unit on Indigenous Studies and were lucky enough to visit a Scar Tree located on our school grounds.

Year 2
The kids have thoroughly enjoyed being back with each other, surrounded by their friends.  We have visited some of the quality work which was achieved over round two of Online Learning and discussed the dedication of our ‘at home teachers’.  It will be a busy term with Science Day, Purple Day, Book Week, Year 2 wetlands visit and Twilight evening to name a few, but we are looking forward to giving it our all while we are at school!

Year 3
Year 3 returned with bright sparkly faces ready to face the new term.  Their enthusiasm and willingness to jump right in and learn as much as possible was a bright light in what turned out to be quite a rainy day.  Enjoying learning about Protective Behaviours, establishing new skills in team building in the way of Captain Ball, independently managing their Maths knowledge improvements and of course congratulating them all for the hard work and effort they put in over the many weeks of online learning throughout the year.  I look forward to all of our adventures both big and small.

Year 4
Our first week back at school in Term 4 was great!  In Maths we learnt about decimals and fractions.  We began robotics where we made Lego robots that get programmed to move.  We also started a new book called ’45 & 47 Stella Street’ and everything that happened, it is interesting and funny.  Finally we learned about Magpie swooping season and made a little jingle to go with it.  Our favourite part of the first week of Term 4 was spending time with friends and making the Magpie jingle!  We are looking forward to the weeks ahead.
By Aeva Haley and Stella O’Mara
Year 5
Whoosh, we are away! Term 4 has started on the fly in Year 5 with students joyous to get back to school and interact with their peers and learn together once again.  Our Year 5 students are busy preparing their leadership speeches for School Leader and House Leader positions in 2021, while also thoroughly engaged in the writing process as they develop their stories for the 2020 Writing Challenge.  They cannot wait to become real life published authors!

Year 6
On the first day back, Year 6 took the opportunity to prepare for the Purple Day Walk being held in school on Thursday 22 October.  The students were challenged to organise a sponsored walk which everyone could complete separately in their year groups.  We had to make sure that everything was designed to be COVID-19 safe.  During recess and lunch on Purple Day, some Year 6 students have volunteered to run competitions, such as raffles, a sweepstake and guess the lollies in the jar.  All the competitions have to be $1 to enter and no change exchanged to avoid any contagion.  Before the day, a quiz and a colouring competition were organised with excellent prizes.

Traralgon Secondary School

From the Head of Traralgon Secondary School,
Mr Brad McCabe.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back all students to Term 4.  I trust and hope staff and students had the chance to slow down and have a break from the computer screen.  It has certainly been an interesting year.

Once again, thank you for your ongoing support and patience during our period of online learning.  We have enjoyed a seamless transition back to on-campus learning for all of our students over the past week.  It has been wonderful to have the students back, re-establishing routines and familiarity as they return to our school environment.  As well as enjoying face-to-face teaching once again, our teachers have also been assessing the progress of each student as we approach the end of Semester 2.

Families are reminded that there are some changes at school with increased hygiene practices and social distancing, as recommended by the Victorian Chief Health Officer and the Department of Education.  Teachers will remind students of these, as well as introduce some additional changes.  The changes include, but are not limited to, the following:

•  All students attending school will receive a temperature screen each morning during Mentor Group, until further notice.  This will take place for most secondary students as they arrive at Mentor Group.  When temperature readings are equal to or greater than 37.5 º the student will return home to their parent/guardian as a precautionary measure.
•  Bubble taps are not operational and students are required to bring drink bottles.  A tap will be available for filling water bottles for student use.
•  There will be plenty of soap and hand sanitiser available across the school for student and staff use.  Students will be encouraged to use both frequently throughout the day and particularly before and after food breaks.
•  Students will be kept, as much as possible, in year level groups and will have separate toilet block access and general use areas.
•  Playground equipment will not be available for use; however, students will have access to other equipment which will be cleaned regularly.
•  There will not be any physical assemblies for the remainder of Term 4.

Please be aware of the following Term 4 dates:
Wednesday 18 to Thursday 19 November  Years 9 and 10 Exams
Friday 20 November  Years 9 and 10 Exam Catch Up Day
Year 10 Celebration Day
Tuesday 24 November to Friday 4 December  Early Commencement 2021 Years 8 to 10

Book Week House Challenge
Over the past two weeks, students were tasked with creating a video of a children’s book.  The idea is for the online book reading to be shared during Book Week with students in the Traralgon Junior School.  Using a range of props and sounds, each house was able to use their creative minds to reproduce their very own story from a chosen book.  It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm from our secondary school students as they worked together as a team.

SRC NEWS

Footy Colours Day
The SRC are excited to be meeting in person after a few Teams meetings to start the term.  They have been busy putting their heads together, organising Footy Colours Day for next week, Thursday 22 October.   Students can wear any sporting team colours to raise awareness for the ‘Fight Cancer Fund’.   A big bucket will collect funds on the way into school and the school bells will be accompanied by Footy theme songs.  The school also supports the Anglican Toy and Food drive which will look a little different this year, so the team will be brainstorming ideas for that cause next.  Stay tuned!

HOUSE SELFIE CHALLENGE

During remote learning, Traralgon Secondary School students participated in the ‘Selfie Challenge’ as part of the 2020 House Competition.  After an online house ‘meeting’ students were instructed to collect as many costuming and décor items as they could in their house colour to add to their background and to wear over their house shirt – all within fifteen minutes.

House Captains provided encouragement and incited house spirit.  House participation points were awarded and after a very close finish, Chisholm House placed first, Lalor House placed second and Monash House placed third.

The latest challenge is a House Book Week Competition, where each year level within a house chooses a book as a basis for a short production to be viewed by the Traralgon Junior School students.  Normally in Book Week, all secondary students visit the Junior School to partake in some paired reading together.  This year, we can still undertake this wonderful shared experience, just in a new format.  The Traralgon Library staff will then judge the winners from each year level as part of the House Competition.  Stay tuned for the winners!

Well, what a delight it was to have students return to face-to-face learning last Thursday.  The buzz and excitement on campus was wonderful to see as students settled quickly back into routines.  My thanks to all families for your cooperation during drop-off and pick-up times.  I understand that it does get busy and congested during these times so please do not panic if you are held up picking up your child/ren.  We continue to follow the same COVID-19 regulations at this stage and I will keep families up-to-date, should there be any changes in the coming weeks following the latest announcements from the Premier this Sunday.

MATTHEW SHEARING,
Class of 2007.

Matt has been teaching at St Paul’s since the beginning of 2019 and is both a Mathematics teacher and Head of Year 7 at the Warragul Campus.

Before coming to St Paul’s, Matt completed a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Secondary Teaching at Monash University, Clayton.  While Matt was studying, he led STEM expeditions that took Australian students to the United States of America to visit NASA’s Johnson Space Centre in Houston and Google Headquarters in San Francisco.

Matt is a St Paul’s alumnus (Class of 2007) and has great memories as a student of the many sporting opportunities, particularly representing the school in soccer, cross country, cricket, gymnastics and athletics.  He was a member of Gilmore House and points out that “The most consistent highlight of every year though was Mr Ken Wilson’s ANZAC day speeches”.

We asked Matt some questions about his teaching…

What made you come back to St Paul’s to teach?
“This is a hard question for me to answer without sounding incredibly biased.  I wanted to come back and teach at St Paul’s because I think we are the best.  We have amazing resources, amazing staff, and most importantly, amazing students.”

What is special about Year 7 at St Paul’s?
“I think Year 7 at St Paul’s exposes students to a wide range of experiences through our elective program as well as our clubs and societies.  It gives everyone the opportunity to try a little bit of everything and helps them discover what they are passionate about.”

What subjects are you most passionate about and why?
“Mathematics was always my favourite subject as a student and that is still true as a teacher.  I love the challenge of the problems and it is always satisfying finding a solution to a tricky question.”

The Head of Secondary School at Warragul, Ms Laura Butterworth said “Matthew is a well-loved member of the teaching staff here at St Paul’s.  From Year 7 through to Year 12 he inspires our students to not only enjoy Mathematics, but to thrive in the classroom.  He is always searching for innovative teaching strategies which engage his learners and develop their confidence. In his role as the Head of Year 7 he is welcoming, nurturing and fun and quickly establishes a rapport with our Year 7 students when they arrive.  As an alumnus of our school we are thrilled to have Matthew as both a teacher and a leader of our community”.

While Matt can often be found playing table tennis with the Year 7 students at recess or lunch, outside of work Matt loves to play soccer which he has been playing since he was eight years old.  “It’s a great way of keeping up with mates and staying fit.”

When we asked Matt about something that his peers and students may not know about him he told us that he once had a thirty-eight hour long birthday.  He flew from Melbourne to Sydney to Los Angeles to Houston to Huntsville AL, leaving Melbourne around 7:00 am and arriving at his hotel in Huntsville around 6:00 pm, about twenty-five hours later!

ST PAUL’S ANNOUNCES VCE IN TRARALGON AND A NEW CAMPUS IN DROUIN

I am pleased to confirm the announcement of two very exciting developments for St Paul’s.

VCE at the Traralgon Campus
Following the 2019/2020 feasibility study of potential school expansion, including community consultation and comprehensive demographic analyses by two separate entities, St Paul’s will open a VCE Campus with Year 11 and 12 at Traralgon.

This is an exciting and historic decision, and will mean that we can offer a quality, independent VCE in the Latrobe Valley.  This cannot happen immediately, however, so we plan to commence with our first Year 11 students in 2026, who are students currently in Year 5.

In preparation for the expected growth that our Traralgon VCE announcement will generate, and to equip us with the facilities needed for VCE, we will be embarking on a staged building program of state-of-the art secondary facilities.  Commencing with Stage 1 in 2022, this building will be a signature statement for the Traralgon Campus, the new combined entry point of the school for both Junior and Secondary.  It will be known as the Futures Centre: a striking double storey building with a grand entry and reception area, outstanding performing arts facilities, GLAs, a modern secondary library adjoining a large spacious open cafeteria, community hub, student commons, staff commons and conference rooms – both large and small.

New Drouin Campus
St Paul’s is also planning to establish a Junior School Campus in Drouin commencing with the early years in 2024.  The new campus will be situated on a prime site of thirty-six acres which has been generously gifted to the School.  The land is situated on the Melbourne side of Drouin, in close proximity to the M1, with construction expected to take place in 2023.

Warragul Campus
Our plans for future buildings at the Warragul Campus, together with upgrades of existing facilities, will in no way be compromised by our expansion in Traralgon and Drouin.  The construction of our new Junior School facilities at the Warragul Campus will soon be resuming.  I thank families, staff and students for being understanding during this period of inactivity and disruption this year.  It will be 2022 before the new Warragul Junior School buildings will be ready to occupy but I am sure that the wait will be well and truly worth it.  We will also be expanding our Early Learning Centre in Warragul during 2021 to increase our program offering.

At a time that is undeniably positive for St Paul’s, I hope you will join us by sharing the news of these developments with many others in the community.  I look forward to the years ahead as we see these plans become reality.

“TIME IS AN ILLUSION.  LUNCHTIME DOUBLY SO.” (Ford Prefect)

“Time is an illusion.  Lunchtime doubly so.” declared by Ford Prefect in the classic book ‘A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’ by Douglas Adams, has long been one of my favorite quotes.  It captures succinctly that strange illusion where time seems to go by at differing rates depending on the nature of whatever activity we might be involved in.  When we find ourselves enduring something painful, boring or frustrating, time can seem to crawl by at an excruciatingly slow pace.  On the other hand, when we are totally immersed in a task or thoroughly enjoying ourselves, time seems to fly by.  The same is true on a larger scale as well.  This year has been incredibly challenging for everyone and it has often felt like the bad news and the restrictions will never end.

Whether it is in the small moments of tedium or the life altering impact of a global pandemic, it is easy to get frustrated and to take out our frustration on others.  We lose patience with those around us, we lose patience with our leaders and we can easily lose patience with God.  Regardless of our starting point (from life-long belief through to long-held skepticism) we can find ourselves asking “why is God not doing something about this?”  There is nothing new about these questions and we find them littered throughout the Bible.  The book of Psalms contains numerous laments and angry demands for action from a seemingly distant God, the book of Job is entirely devoted to addressing the question of suffering and in the New Testament even Jesus’ disciples get frustrated with him.

In the second letter of Peter we are reminded that God’s perspective on time is rather different from ours.  God is not limited by the same constraints of time because “with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.” (2 Peter 3:8)  Time is simply not an issue with God because He has an unlimited amount of it.

Recently, a young girl in our Junior School spoke passionately to me about being promised a puppy by her mother, “She said I could have a puppy in two years.  It has been two years and still no puppy.”  Her sense of injustice was heartfelt and I could sympathise with her but at the same time, as a parent, I could see plenty of reasons why the puppy might not be arriving any time soon.  My perspective (along with that of this girl’s mother I suspect) was very different from hers.  I wonder if it is a bit like this between us and God.  From our perspective the requests and demands we make seem perfectly reasonable but God sees a much bigger picture.  And so, like this young girl, we have to be patient.  Sure, we might cry out to God in our frustration but we also need to trust God.

To put this into a 2020 perspective, the question we should be asking is not “when will this end?” or “when will God end this?” but rather “How does God call us to respond in the midst of it?”  And the answer of course is with patience, compassion and selflessness.

It is so nice to be gathering together again in person; to be in the classroom together; to talk and play with our friends at lunchtime; but there is also some readjusting to be done.  Not only are we getting used to new things like wearing masks all the time and trying to maintain some physical distancing but we might also be a little out of practice with some of our social interactions.  To put it bluntly, while it might be great to be back with friends, we have also been a bit shielded from other people who might annoy us.  Now that we are all together again, we need to remember how to be understanding of other people’s quirks; to be patient with people who annoy us; and to be forgiving of people who upset us.  There is an integrity of character that is reflected in our ability to treat others well regardless of our circumstances.  May God bless you with grace and forbearance as we seek to love and care for each other.

“Love each other as brothers and sisters and honor others more than you do yourself.  Never give up.  Eagerly follow the Holy Spirit and serve the Lord.  Let your hope make you glad.  Be patient in time of trouble and never stop praying.” (Romans 12:10-11)

Warragul Secondary School

From the Head of Warragul Secondary School,
Ms Laura Butterworth.

We are back!
After a long, eerily quiet winter term here at St Paul’s Warragul Secondary School, bells are back and with them, all the other telltale sounds of a thriving school.  It has been wonderful to hear students and teachers presenting in class, laughing and chatting happily (albeit through masks) as they move between and make use of all the wonderful facilities this campus has to offer.

Students have been expressing their appreciation to teachers and teachers remain particularly grateful to students and parents for all their tireless work at home.  The breadth of learning online has meant our students are returning now to continue their learning rather than recommence it.  LOTE students found ways to practice their speaking skills on Teams and via Education Perfect and are now attempting general conversation in the classroom.  Science found ways to undertake modified practical classes, so that students are ready for dynamic demonstrations of exploding hydrogen gas (on a very small scale of course!) and the transformation of bacteria with a jellyfish gene so they glow under UV light.  In other faculties, COVID-19 has already found its way into the curriculum, with Year 7 Humanities considering the liability of their home in a new light and Year 8 students considering the impact of the global pandemic on migration.  All faculties are constantly adapting and looking to turn the difficult events of this year into a positive.

Just as remote learning provokes a rethink of existing curriculum, so too does a return to school.  Each return brings new rules, norms and challenges, and all students have been eager to keep everyone safe while pushing ahead with the year.  Special mention in this regard needs to go to our Year 12 students.  Despite so many unforeseeable challenges, the St Paul’s Class of 2020 have remained upbeat and enthusiastic.  They have now completed all their Units 3 and 4 SACs, giving themselves ample time to consolidate content knowledge and prepare for upcoming VCAA exams.  Year 12 teachers helped the Director of Studies deliver full-length, Zoom-based practice exams in the Term 3 holidays and the student turn out for these exams was sensational.  It reflected the cohort’s impressive stamina and work ethic in a particularly challenging year.

This week we tried to return to some serious normality by holding our first assembly in quite a long time.  This was held via Zoom with Mentors joining the meeting and projecting the assembly on the electronic whiteboard in each classroom.  Unfortunately, there was no singing but we did observe many of our normal assembly traditions as well as hearing from Reverend Daniel Lowe our Chaplain, our Principal Mr Herbert and our School Captains Rachel Jennings and James Gourley.  We also inducted our Year 7 Year Level Leaders and Student Representative Council members.  The assembly finished with a special presentation from our Prefects.  We are continuing to find a way in this unusual year.

SPORT NEWS

During a time of isolation and online learning, regular practical challenge competitions were created to bring some physical activity to home learning spaces.

Each challenge involved an opportunity to compete against our Sport Trainees.  At the end of each challenge period, the competition panel (trainees and Head of Sports), judged each entrant to determine the winner and to award a prize ($25 local sports shop voucher).

There were many participants throughout both online learning periods.  Well done each student who participated in the challenges!

The details of our latest winners are:

ISO PRAC Challenge 12 – Can you beat Liam?
How many planks to push ups can you complete in one minute?

Congratulations to Alexandar Mirkovic from Year 10 who is the winners of the ISO Challenge 12.

Neisha Ablett from Year 11, set the standard high earlier in the week, completing forty-one planks to push ups in one minute. Entrants throughout the week were pushing hard to beat this record, however, it was Alex’s second entry of forty-five in one minute that won this challenge.  Well done!

ISO PRAC Challenge 13 – Can you beat Saskia?
How many taps can you complete with a racquet in one minute?

Congratulations to Ella Shaddock from Year 11 who is the winner of the ISO Challenge 13.

Ella, also set the standard high, completing two hundred and eight taps in one minute.  But it was a close competition this week, with two students tallying over two hundred taps and four students with over one hundred and fifty taps.  Well done!
