Traralgon Junior School

From the Head of Traralgon Junior School,
Ms Tracey King.

Welcome to the 2022 School Year
The first two weeks of term have been calm and very settled in our Junior School and we have enjoyed a fantastic start to the year. It has been lovely to see students arriving with big smiles each morning and engaged in learning in classrooms. The weather has been beautiful and our students have been making the most of playtime in the gardens. Students have been excited to be starting the school year and there has been a lovely atmosphere across the entire school.

We have already enjoyed a number of activities; Swim Testing and Swim Trials for Years 3 to 6, photos for new students and a Whole School Assembly to induct our new School Leaders for 2022 and Crossing of the Prep Hats. Specialist classes have started and some of our co-curricular activities began this week too. Students have been involved in ‘learning to learn’ activities with their teachers and classmates and have spent time setting up classroom processes and expectations. A highlight for Years 5 and 6 has been brain dissections and learning about how their brains acquire new information and skills and process this information to their long term memory. Students have been discussing neurons, brain care and strategies to be more efficient learners. It has been a productive and enjoyable start to the 2022 school year for both students and teachers.

Special congratulations to our Prep students who have settled well into their new school routines and have impressed their teachers with their eagerness to learn and participate. Early Learning Centre groups are also underway and our youngest children have been excited and keen to enjoy activities and play opportunities.

Many thanks to all of our teachers who have been organised and well prepared to ensure a calm and smooth first week of school and that everyone has been successful in their learning. Many thanks also to our parents who have worked with their children to ensure they are organised and prepared for learning each day.

Congratulations to Year 6 students, Isabella Slocombe and Araan Patel, who have been elected to the positions of Junior School Leaders for 2022. All of our Year 6 cohort take on leadership responsibilities throughout the year and will be presented to Mr Herbert and our school community at our Leaders Induction Assembly Service this afternoon. We are confident that all of our Year 6 students will represent the Traralgon Junior School well and will fulfil their leadership roles with diligence and a desire to serve our community and do their very best.

Teacher Professional Learning
Teachers were back at school in the lead up to our first day participating in Professional Learning Days and preparing for the year ahead. Teachers completed Thinking Maps training and have already been busy introducing students to these tools.  Thinking Maps is a whole-school, brain-based approach to teaching and learning, designed to build foundational critical thinking, problem-solving, comprehension and communication skills necessary for academic success. The Maps provide a shared visual “language for learning”. Thinking Maps are a set of eight visual patterns or icons that each represent a specific cognitive process; defining, sequencing, describing, cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, whole-part, classifying and analogy. Unlike graphic organisers, which are highly varied and inconsistent, the eight Thinking Maps are used consistently across all grades and content areas. This ensures that students develop automaticity with the major thought processes by using the Maps to engage the cognitive processes they represent. As students build fluency with the Maps, they internalise these cognitive skills and learn how to become better learners, thinkers, and communicators. Teachers are looking forward to sharing Thinking Maps with parents at our upcoming Parent Information Sessions.

Teachers have also immersed themselves in learning about the brain and have participated in brain dissections, building plasticine models of the Information Processing Model and developing their understanding of Cognitive Load Theory. It has certainly been a busy start to the year.

COVID-19 Guidelines
It has been wonderful to be able to return to school in person and know that online learning is not hanging over our heads!  I thank all of our parents and families for their cooperation and open communication as we manage the new recommendations and guidelines. Please do not gather in groups on school grounds and please wear a mask if you are unable to socially distance yourself adequately. Parents are asked to not enter school buildings unless they have an appointment or are attending a special function. If you are attending on-site and need to enter school buildings, parents are required to firstly register at the Junior School Office and produce evidence of vaccination.

Parents are asked to keep unwell children at home and if anyone in the family is showing symptoms of illness please see your GP and continue using provided RATs to test for COVID. Current DHHS guidelines recommend that anyone who shows any signs of fever, cough, sore throat should be tested for COVID-19 even if symptoms are mild. Our best way of managing COVID-19 at this time is to ensure that unwell students, parents and staff do not attend school. Please be aware that any children who do attend unwell will have their parents contacted to collect them from school, camps or excursions. I thank all of our families in advance for their cooperation and understanding.

Welcoming our new teachers
Our new staff have started the year with high energy and enthusiasm and have quickly become valued members of our team. We welcome teachers Ms Sarah Berryman, Ms Nicole Cross, Ms Jade Hosken, Mrs Julia Cullen and Ms Jannet Taylor. We also welcome Education Support staff Mr Lucas Tripodi who will be working with students in classrooms and at playtimes, Mrs Allison Speairs who is working with our ELC and Miss Onnie Olssen who has joined us in the Junior School Office.

This week we have included an introduction from each of our teachers.

Miss Sarah Berryman.

“Hi, my name is Miss Berryman and I feel incredibly lucky to be able to join the St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School community at the Traralgon Junior School this year. I have recently moved back to Gippsland after beginning my teaching career in Ballarat three years ago, having most recently taught Years 3 and 4.

This year I am excited to be teaching Year 1. I love seeing students have that ‘lightbulb moment’ when they understand a new concept and look forward each day to hearing about all the co-curricular activities my students are involved in. When I am not teaching you will often find me cooking desserts for my friends and family, taking photos of sunsets (and sunrises if I wake up in time), and playing with my gorgeous dog Belle. I am looking forward to immersing myself in all the opportunities that St Paul’s provides to both students and families. I also hope that we can safely have school-wide events soon, so I can meet many more members of the St Paul’s community.”

Ms Nicole Cross.

“My teaching journey started when I was 18 years old, teaching dance to Years 7 and 8 students at St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, Warragul as part of a lunchtime dance club. After completing a dance teaching placement at a primary school in Benella, I decided that I would like to be a classroom teacher and help students to grow and develop a passion and love for learning. Upon completing my studies, I worked as a specialist and casual relief teacher in several Melbourne primary and secondary schools. I relocated back to Gippsland in 2020 and taught Grades 4 and 5 at Newborough Primary School. My hobbies include dance and craft. I love teaching because I can help students to develop skills and knowledge that will help them in the future. I am also passionate about instilling a desire for lifelong learning and get a buzz from witnessing the joy when students achieve success in academics, sport, art and wellbeing. I am looking forward to getting to know and working with the students and staff at St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, Traralgon Junior School this year and building positive relationships with my students and families.”

Ms Jade Hosken.

“Hi, I’m Ms Hosken and I am super excited to be joining the amazing staff and students here at St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School. I started my teaching career four years ago and have enjoyed every second of it. I have taught Preps right through to Year 4, and now I am super lucky to be teaching Year 5 in 2022. I love that every day brings something new and no day is ever dull. Besides teaching, I enjoy snowboarding, reading any book written by the one and only Dr. Seuss, cooking (but not cleaning up afterwards) and of course, spending time with my family and friends.

I am looking forward to being involved in all the wonderful opportunities this school has to offer and I can’t wait to meet all the beautiful families here at St Paul’s very soon.”

Mrs Julia Cullen.

“Hello! I’m Mrs Cullen, I have been a teacher for fifteen years and I have worked across all year levels. I love teaching because even though we grow older we don’t grow up entirely! I enjoy seeing students’ faces light up when they have that ‘aha’ moment and helping them find books and authors that they love. In my spare time I love to read (Australian historical fiction is my current favourite) and spend time with my family and friends. We never stop learning so I am looking forward to working and learning alongside my students. I am excited to be part of the friendly and supportive community of St Paul’s.”

Ms Jannet Taylor.

“I’m really excited to be here, and I am looking forward to meeting everyone. My hobbies include reading – no surprise there I guess, camping and 4WD, as well as kickboxing – this is a surprise to most people. I have a Boston Terrier named Archie who is my best friend, he’s awesome and does all sorts of tricks. I’ve recently finished reading ‘The List’ and ‘The Last Word’ by Patricia Forde, which I highly recommend to our secondary students. My favourite author at the moment has to be Matthew Reilly, an Australian author who wrote the Jack West series. I love how fast paced his books are – chapters can be three pages long and it’s all action.

I have been busily rearranging the library space at Traralgon, so please drop in, say hi and have a look around… maybe borrow a book as well.”

Calendar Events
Please be aware that our Parent Information Session is scheduled for Monday 21 February from 7:00 pm. We have moved our Family Fun Night gathering to later in the term in the hope that we will be able to be on-site together as a large group and able to enjoy a community event. The evening will begin at 7:00 pm in the school gymnasium.

I hope that you all take the time to read the newsletter each fortnight and visit MyStPauls to see what your child has been up to in their year level and specialist classes. MyStPauls also contains lots of information about school events and helps to keep you up-to-date with everything that happens in the Junior School and can be a great way to start a conversation with your child about their day at school. For families who may have misplaced their login details, I ask that you contact IT Support at the school and they will issue you with a new one.

Warragul Secondary School

From the Acting Head of Warragul Secondary School,
Mr Gordon Oldham.

Thank you to members of the community for the warm welcome to St Paul’s. It has been so exciting to be here as students return to classes and a range of co-curricular activities resume.

During our first assembly, on Tuesday 1 February, I told students that I love the way St Paul’s students are aspirational – they want to do well and they want to continuously improve, no matter what the chosen pathway. Some will pursue a tertiary destination, some will take on employment or a trade and all of them will do it as well as possible. I am proud when a past student helps as my own daughter’s dentist and I am equally pleased to see former students leading the way in the building industry. School life here is busy and exciting and it is wonderful to see students take on so many opportunities.

School Captains William Pendergast and Charlotte Shaw delivered the main speech on the first day of school and they declared a commitment for members of the school community to ‘be kind’. They spoke of a desire to enjoy the year, to move forward and leave the interrupted years behind and to look out for each other.

COVID-19
We appreciate the support of parents and students in our efforts to ensure that we can continue to attend school as planned.  The RAT regime, in addition to keeping students home who have symptoms, has helped to ensure that our overall numbers are low. As noted in recent correspondence, we have had more positives in senior year levels and separate correspondence has been sent to students and families confirming the way they can be supported with their academic progress.

The school has consulted the Public Health Unit regarding our positive cases, alongside our regular communication with representatives from Independent Schools Victoria. A reminder that close contacts are expected to isolate for seven days. Education contacts do not need to isolate but should monitor for symptoms and maintain the twice-weekly RAT regime. Social contacts, those who have been near to a higher number of positive cases, for exmple a cluster – should undertake a RAT for five consecutive days. Students may still attend school if they do not have symptoms. Students with symptoms but a negative RAT should undertake a PCR.

Overall, we are very grateful for the efforts of families to keep the school informed. Students have done an excellent job of wearing masks at school and, without wanting to jinx current efforts, we have not had any staff absences.

INDUCTION OF LEADERS
We enjoyed the opportunity to meet formally with Years 7 to 12 students to formally induct the student leaders for 2022. Students who were absent will be inducted on Thursday 10 March – more than ever, we are ready to find ways to help students who are impacted by absences, particularly when isolation is taking place.

Members of the Academic Honours Society – Class of 2021 students who achieved an ATAR 95 or above – were also inducted and ATAR Dux Annabelle Rajasingham delivered a presentation to current students. Please enjoy a copy of Annabelle’s speech, below.

“It is a real honour to be able to speak to you all on behalf of the class of 2021, and I am very grateful for being given this opportunity.

I’d firstly like to congratulate the Class of 2021. As a cohort, there is a lot for us to celebrate – we were not only able to succeed academically, but accomplished so much more than that: We were hard-working and determined, but never lost our lively nature and sense of humour regardless of the many challenges we faced. We were also able to form friendships and shared memories we’ll never forget. I feel very blessed to have been part of such a talented, quite entertaining but also very caring cohort.

Most of you here today have just entered a new school year. Regardless of which year level you are in, there are probably mixed feelings of excitement and nerves. Whilst new classes, teachers and subjects may feel a bit overwhelming, I would like to encourage you to think about what you want to achieve this year, so that this time next year, you will be able to look back and be proud of all you accomplished in 2022, having no regrets. Make the most of each of the numerous opportunities St Paul’s has to offer, whether it be sport, debating, music, art, leadership positions… the list goes on. Time flies and before you know it, you will be graduating and have to say goodbye to your school journey. So, I can’t stress enough to never give up a chance to try something new, even if it seems a little daunting at first, as this will help you have a balanced and memorable school life.

Despite the worries you may have as you begin a new year, I believe there are two important qualities we can all adapt to help us all navigate the challenges we may face this year.

The first is about our perspective. We’ve all heard about having a ‘positive mindset’ probably far more times than we can count – but sometimes we mistakenly believe this means we have to be happy and cheery all the time. Being positive doesn’t necessarily have to mean you ignore challenges or feelings of sadness and disappointment. Instead, it’s more about being aware of when things don’t go the way you hoped for and allowing yourself to acknowledge this, but then thinking about if there’s anything that can help you move forward, rather than dwelling on a temporary difficulty.

In fact, setbacks are not a bad thing. It’s ok to not reach your goal or do worse in something than you expected, even if it feels like a failure at the time. It is often said that ‘failure is not the opposite of success, it is part of success”. If anything, you’ll learn something from experiences of failure, which will equip you for challenges you may face in the future.

As well as our perspective, I believe one of the most effective ways to stay resilient and not give up is through gratitude. I’ll be the first to admit that between endless sacs, ongoing lockdowns and the cancellation of events I was looking forward to in our last year of schooling, I found it very easy to find reasons to complain about how unfair it was. It’s natural to vent every now and then, but constant complaining only leads to us feeling unmotivated and drained. Rather than complaining though, what if we chose to be grateful instead?

Harvard Health recently conducted a study involving two groups of people to explore the effect of gratitude. One group wrote about what they were grateful for during the week, whilst the other group wrote about things that had irritated or frustrated them. After a ten-week period, it was no surprise that the group that had written about what they were grateful for, were more optimistic, they noticed their social relationships and productivity improve, and they experienced an overall boost in their health and wellbeing. It is clear that being grateful for what you have, even just small things like being able to see your friends each day at school, can make you feel better and help you accomplish more than you might have expected.

For me personally, I am grateful to God for the opportunities I had at St Paul’s – the friendships I was able to make, fun memories I can look back on such as during school musicals or at debating nights at Maccas, and also the experiences we were able to enjoy as a cohort throughout the years, whether it be city camp or the Gala Ball. I am also thankful for the welcoming community here at St Paul’s, especially for having encouraging teachers that genuinely cared about us and worked hard to support us. I hope that everyone here will also someday be able to look back at their time at St Paul’s, and recall the many memories and opportunities they are grateful to have experienced.

So, as you enter the new year, I’d like to encourage you all to shift your perspective when it gets tough and try to be grateful for even the simple things each day. I hope that these two traits will help you bounce back from hardships and stay motivated throughout 2022.

Thank you all for your time and I wish you all the best for this year.”

PASTORAL BLOCK
The Pastoral Block timetable includes a range of assemblies, Chapel and Mentor time as students at each year level listen to presentations or work on ideas associated with wellbeing. Some current focal points include the use of external provider Elevate Education in Year 11, the Year 10 students hearing about safe driving and the Year 12 students having the opportunity to ask questions of the Class of 2021 and hear the top tips for approaching their final year. It is great to see Year 9 preparing for a return to the City Experience, Year 7 getting to know each other and their Peer Support Leaders and preparing for camp and Year 8 working on time management and organisation.

Should you wish to learn more about the focus in the pastoral block, feel free to contact the relevant Head of Year.

SUTTON STREET
We have been advised that the roadworks taking place in Sutton Street may well continue until the end of term. Members of the community who regularly use this stretch will know of the delays but we appreciate the efforts of the council to complete a significant upgrade.

LATE BUS
Please note that the late bus towards the Latrobe Valley normally runs on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and departs at 5:10 pm.

However, as we currently begin Presentation Ball training sessions, the late bus will leave at 5:30 pm on Mondays and, from 22 February, 5:30 pm on Tuesdays.

HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Separate correspondence was sent to parents noting that the House Swimming Carnival will now be optional. In a ‘normal’ year, it is a compulsory event and we love the spirit with which students approach the day, led by Year 12 students. However, families are welcome to keep students at home, given the current climate, and an absence will be accepted without any further impact. If you are going to allow your son/daughter at home, please ensure that you have completed an RSVP via Consent2Go or an absence SMS will be sent on the day.

PHOTOGRAPHS
Please refer to a recent email that was sent regarding the school photographs and the process for ordering photographs.

Gordon Oldham
Acting Head of Warragul Secondary School

Year 12 students took part in a Q and A with members of the Class of 2021. The recent graduates spoke to current Year 12 students about their approach to Year 12, encouraging them to find their study strengths, keep connecting with each other and to ensure that they found moments of joy throughout the year.

2023 ELC families please note that with the expansion of government funding for Pre-Kinder in 2023 we are reviewing our program structures and costs to ensure best use of our new facilities. We will provide families with an ELC 2023 update as soon as finalised information becomes available. In the meantime, families should be aware that St Paul’s is currently receiving a large demand for places at Pre-Kinder and Prep in 2023, and the School recommends families and any interested friends in the broader community enrol at the earliest opportunity to reserve their child’s place on the Enrolment Register.

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS

It is with great enthusiasm that I announce to the school community the recent nomination of Ilyan Mofakhami (Year 12) to audition for Top Class, part of the VCE Season of Excellence program on his primary instrument of Alto Saxophone. To be nominated for this event is an incredible privilege, one that demonstrates a true and unwavering commitment to personal growth and performance craft within VCE Music Performance. Despite not being successful in this audition process, it is worth celebrating this important milestone. To be nominated to perform as a representative of the VCE Music Performance cohort is an incredible achievement in itself – I am sure I speak for the whole school community in congratulating Ilyan on his brilliant personal achievement.
The Warragul Secondary School was treated to a selection from Ilyan’s 2021 VCE Music Performance program on Wednesday 9 February as part of our Leaders Induction Assembly. Ilyan performed ‘The Lake and the Hinterland’ (Composed by Stuart Greenbaum) on Alto Saxophone, accompanied by Mr Chris Staben on piano.

SPORT NEWS

Swimming Carnival 2022
We are so excited about the opportunity to have a House Carnival but given the current climate, we have decided to make the event optional for students. Separate correspondence with further details will be sent to parents, including a new Consent2Go which gives parents the option to withdraw students from attending.

Students are to come to school by 8:50 am and are to go to their Mentor rooms. Students will travel by bus; departing from school between 9:05 am and 9:20 am and will be taken by bus to the Moe Outdoor Pool. Students must wear a face mark whilst on the bus and are to wear full house sport uniform, this consists of the official school sports shorts, house T-shirt, school hat and sports shoes (no thongs). Students wishing to wear costumes in house colours must change into these clothes at the pool.

Students will be returned to school by bus in time for a normal departure at 3:30 pm. Students who wish to travel directly to the pool in the morning or to leave from the pool in the afternoon must submit the ‘Alternative Transport Form’ to their Head of House (HOH) by Friday 11 February. These forms have been distributed to families via Consent2Go and are also published on the MyStPauls Sport page.

Year 12 students ONLY: There are a small number of seats available on the Traralgon Secondary School Bus to take students to and from Moe Pool on 15 February. Due to the limited number of seats, only a small number of students will be permitted to travel on this bus. Buses from the Warragul Secondary School will also be going to the pool and Year 12 students can join their peers and take these buses to attend the swimming event. To check availability and to secure a seat, Year 12 students must see Ms Caitlin Powell, the Head of Year 12, as soon as possible.

Students will be able to view the events they are swimming in via their ‘House Page’ from today. Head of Houses will also provide event slips to students on the day. Points are also awarded to students who participate in the novelty events and free swim on the day.

See you at the pool!

Traralgon Secondary School

From the Head of Traralgon Secondary School,
Mrs Leonie Clark

As the soothing breeze beyond the wetlands enveloped the freshly manicured gardens and the scent of the native vegetation was released by the warmth of the day, we patiently awaited the arrival and parade of vehicles. It was not long before nervous, excited and perhaps bleary-eyed children were farewelled by parents and guardians at the start of another school year.

Our staff have been eagerly preparing for the return to school. Although we did not know exactly how things might play out this term, we were hopeful that 2022 would start well for all of our families in the Latrobe Valley and beyond.

A huge thank you to our Traralgon Secondary School community for their willingness to Rapid Antigen Test their children twice weekly and communicate any positive results with us. We are working very hard to keep our students and our staff safe so that we can continue to remain open. Your very kind cooperation and support has been absolutely second to none, and I cannot thank you enough for working together with us.

We have enjoyed the most fabulous first week at Traralgon Secondary School as we welcomed our brand new Year 7 cohort! Our very first cohort to continue all the way through to Year 12 Graduation in 2027 has commenced with us in 2022, our 20th year in the Latrobe Valley! Our new Year 7 students are to be sincerely congratulated for bravely walking into the secondary school with their school bags laden with new books and freshly made school lunches packed at home, no doubt, by slightly anxious parents! I know it’s hard! All of our parents have done a wonderful job preparing their children for the monumental transition to secondary school.

Freshly combed hair and crisp white collars were illuminated in the light of a new school year as all of our returning students walked the familiar front path, past our Principal Mr Herbert and our two Heads of Year, Mr Andrew McGrath (Years 7 and 8) and Ms Sandra Timmer-Arrends (Years 9 and 10).

I extend a particularly warm welcome to our new families both at Year 7 and across all other levels. We know that the transition to secondary school, and indeed a new school, can be a daunting period for students and their families. Many students manage it with great ease while others find it takes a little longer to feel completely settled. Our staff have worked exceptionally hard in the last two weeks to ensure that every child is feeling connected and settled. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to call your child’s Mentor or Head of Year as they are only too happy to help and really do want to work with you as a team to ensure a seamless start to 2022.

Our intermediate SEISA trials proceeded as planned, as well as the Years 7 and 8 swim trials directly after our Leader Induction Assembly last Thursday morning. At the commencement of our Welcome and Leader Induction Assembly we were very pleased and excited to formally receive our Year 7 cohort into the secondary school. The entire secondary school stood for the Year 7 students and clapped our newest arrivals as they entered the gymnasium at the beginning of their very first formal St Paul’s assembly. Nervous Year 7 students followed each other into their rows and found their place within our superb St Paul’s family and community. My hope and message for all of our students in 2022 is that they make the most of every opportunity and discover their potential amongst the plethora of possibilities on offer this year in the secondary school.

We also proudly inducted our 2022 school leaders during the assembly, and I have included some photos of our brand new and very impressive student leadership team below as we celebrate this outstanding moment in their successful journey at St Paul’s. Nicholas Fenech and Ananya Philips our 2022 Traralgon Secondary School Captains delivered an outstanding address to their peers during the assembly and I know they will continue to demonstrate and lead our students with wisdom, integrity, compassion and respect.

Student Services
Thank you to those families who have continued to keep us informed regarding their child’s results throughout this period. Should your child test positive on a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) please let Maddison know in Student Services and she will inform relevant staff. We hope that all of our families continue to stay safe at this time, we know it is hard on everyone with yet another COVID-19 complexity for very busy families to manage. Our thoughts are with any families in our community currently overcoming COVID-19.

Arthur Reed School Photographs 2022
Please do not hesitate to contact Student Services should your child have misplaced their unique code for the ordering of Arthur Reed school photos. Maddison is all too ready to assist you should you need help.

Immunisations
Information has been sent to parents/guardians of Year 7 and Year 10 students with regard to the Nation Immunisation Program. Details regarding the immunisations are contained in the letters. Please note these are not the COVID-19 vaccinations. Please let us know via Consent2Go if your child will or will not be participating in the program. This is to ensure that we have an accurate register and can organise your child’s participation in the program on-site at school.

MyStPauls
Our staff will continue to update their class pages at the end of the day, for any absent students. We will continue to support any students who may be unwell with COVID-19 or need to isolate at home. Please keep us informed of your child’s progress as we do look forward to welcoming them back to school as soon as possible. The current situation is likely to continue for some time, and our staff will continue to support your child/ren’s learning through MyStPaul’s until they are able to safely return to us on-site.

School Events and Camps
We have and will continue to put in place a number of extra measures to mitigate risks to our students and staff at school events, excursions and camps. We plan to, where possible and sensible, keep events running, even if that does mean that they are slightly different or not quite as we recall from the past. We are pleased to be able to offer something much closer to normalcy this year and hope that throughout the year, we can wind back some of the additional protocols, and add in some of the key traditions and experiences for our families. However, at this stage, we are conservative in our approach and taking things one day at a time. We sincerely thank our parents and guardians for their understanding.

SunSmart
Please ensure that your child has a school hat to wear while at school as the sun does continue to have some heat left in it. We do want to ensure that we are protecting your child/ren from the harsh rays while they enjoy the fresh air and sunshine outside. We are a SunSmart School and we will be asking students to continue to wear their hats while outside.

Uniforms
The Mentors and staff have been most impressed with the outstanding standard of student uniform this year. A very special thank you to our fabulous parents and guardians for checking their child’s uniform each morning and making sure they have the correct socks, shoes and school bag with them prior to leaving home. A copy of the uniform policy can be found in the front of the Year 7 to Year 9 student diary and on MyStPauls. A gentle reminder that the jumper is not to be worn as the outer garment when arriving or leaving the school. The blazer is the outer garment or the dress or shirt if it is very hot. In winter students may wear the blazer over the jumper for extra warmth when arriving and departing our school. We are immensely proud of our uniform and the pride that our students and families take in wearing it in public.

Canteen Ordering
Should your child/ren wish to enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal or snack from our canteen we do advise that you pop in an order via MunchMonitor, link included below for your reference. Our canteen is very popular, and this will most certainly ensure that your child is not disappointed and unable to purchase a particular meal or snack from the menu that they were anticipating.

Activities and Clubs
In 2022 the Traralgon Secondary School staff are committed to providing a plethora of activities and clubs for your child/ren to explore. I have included a list of different activities and clubs below for our new and continuing students to peruse and consider. Our staff will warmly welcome any student who might wish to explore a new passion or interest.

ENROLMENTS REMINDER

The Enrolments team would like to remind families who plan for their next child to commence at St Paul’s in 2022 that enrolment application forms should be submitted prior to the end of Term 1. As the School currently has waiting lists at a number of year levels, please submit an enrolment application at your earliest opportunity to ensure all children in your family have a place on the School’s Enrolment Register. Please note that a separate Enrolment Application is required for each child.

Online Enrolment Application is available via the following link to our website: https://stpaulsags.vic.edu.au/enrolment/enrolling-at-st-pauls/ or you can collect a hard copy Enrolment Pack from Junior School Reception.

Please contact our Enrolments Office on 5175 0133 if you have questions about enrolment at St Paul’s, or if you would like to arrange a tour of the ELC, Junior or Secondary School.

(Current families, please note that enrolment at St Paul’s is continuous from the point of entry until the end of Year 12, and your child’s place in the next year level is automatically allocated; you do not need to submit an enrolment application for your child to transition to the next stage of their schooling at St Paul’s).

THE RUN WAS FUN!

2021 saw the school year end on a high note, as students ran, crawled, skipped and cartwheeled around our school oval for our annual Run for East Timor. Dressed to impress, many students participated in a pre-run Fashion Show, parading with other members of their house in their house themed costumes. From super-heroes to police officers, costumed students covered many kilometres whilst raising much-needed funds for our current building project, an English Language Centre in Malimea Village.

Team Timor continues their fundraising with our upcoming Valentine’s Day Flowers, where students can order a delivery of a small bottle of flowers to their Valentine (or a friend) for $3 or enter our ‘Guess the Lollies in the Jar’ competition.

If you would like to support our fundraising efforts in any way, please email Kirsten Enders at kenders@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au

HEAD OF YEAR REPORT

Youth Council visit
Our Years 9 and 10 students had the opportunity to listen to Georgia and Jason from Latrobe City about how they can become involved and be part of the Latrobe City Youth Council 2022. This is a great opportunity for Youth Councillors to work on exciting projects to help their community and have a serious impact on what happens in the future. They will also be able to build important leadership and advocacy skills to help them navigate through life no matter what is thrown at them. Students received a flyer with information on how to apply after the talk.

I hope some of our students take this wonderful opportunity. It was great to see our previous students present to us in a video, how much they enjoyed being part of the Youth Council.

Welcome to the 2022 school year at St Paul’s. I extend a special welcome to our new students and families, together with our new members of staff. I hope that everyone new to our community will feel an increasing sense of belonging and common purpose as the year progresses.

Two weeks into the academic year, it has been a pleasure to have students back on campus. While we still live in uncertain times, it seems that there is a clear intention at all levels of society, from Government right through to most individuals and organisations, to try to make this year resemble as much as possible the relative normality that we enjoyed prior to the onset of the pandemic early in 2020. Time will tell, of course, but the intent is refreshing. There are numerous events scheduled for this term and we hope that most of these will proceed in some format, provided that we can do so safely.

At both campuses, Welcome Assemblies and the Induction of Student Leaders have been features of the first two weeks, albeit in a modified form with the current restrictions in place. At the Warragul Secondary School Assembly this week, we inducted our highest ATAR achievers (ATARs over 95) into St Paul’s Academic Honours Society.

These students, in alphabetical order, were:
•  Tanvi Atla (Coursework Dux)
•  Caitlin Davis
•  Alessio Fenech
•  Daniel Gallagher
•  Amity Jackson
•  Tahlia Pemberton
•  Annabelle Rajasingham (Dux)
•  Isabella Watts
•  Amy Zhou

The Dux of 2021, Annabelle Rajasingham, delivered an inspirational speech to the assembly. A transcript of Annabelle’s address is included in the report from Mr Oldham, the Acting Head of Warragul Secondary School. I encourage all students, and particularly the Class of 2022, to take the time to read Annabelle’s transcript and heed her sage advice.

Draft Strategic Plan
Our new Strategic Plan, Pursuing Potential 2022-2028, will be launched in Term 2 this year. The draft of this Strategic Plan can be viewed at Draft Strategic Plan. We would welcome your feedback at this consultative stage and encourage you to provide your comments at strategicplanreply@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au by 25 February 2022.

From the Head of Warragul Junior School,
Mr Rowan van Raay.

Welcome to 2022
Welcome to the first edition of the Grammarian for 2022. It has been wonderful to see our students settling into the new school year so well.

I hope that you all take the time to read the Grammarian each fortnight and visit MyStPauls to see what your child/ren have been up to in their Year Level and Specialists classes. MyStPauls also contains a lot of information about school events and helps to keep you up to date with everything that happens in the Junior School and can be a great way to start a conversation with your child about their day at school. For families who may have misplaced their login details, I ask that you contact IT Support at the school (5622 6148) and they will issue you with a new one. Hopefully new families have received login details by now, if not, please let us know.

RATs
The next delivery of RATs should arrive in time for distribution on Monday and will be sent home with the eldest child in each family again on Monday afternoon. Please keep an eye out for these and we encourage all families to continue to test their children twice a week as we endeavour to keep our students, staff and wider community safe.

Parent Information Evenings
Our Prep to Year 2 families, Parent Welcome Information Evening will be held on Monday evening commencing at 7:00 pm in the Warragul Junior School gymnasium. A friendly reminder to use the QR code and show proof of vaccination upon arrival and to wear a face mask when indoors.

Our Years 3 to 6 Parent Welcome and Information Evening will be held on Thursday 24 February commencing at 7:00 pm in the Warragul Junior School gymnasium with sessions in the classrooms commencing at around 7:40 pm. Please note that the session in the gym will be identical to the one held during the Prep to Year 2 evening, so you will only need to attend one of these.

For families who are unable to make it, all Year Level Information Booklets will be uploaded on Year Level pages on MyStPauls.

Orientation Sessions – ‘Setting Up the Year’ – ‘Building a Cohesive Classroom’
Building a sense of belonging and a cohesive classroom has been a focus during the first few weeks of school. Allowing students to connect with each other has been important after the disruptions of the past few years. Students have participated in a variety of ‘Orientation Sessions’. The aim of the program is for all students to hear the same message and to focus on different aspects of school life at St Paul’s. These sessions included the following:

• School Values (Wisdom, Integrity, Compassion and Respect) – explanation of our school values and how they underpin all that we do at St Paul’s. Everyone has the right to feel safe, happy and respected at St Paul’s.

• Social Skills, Courtesy, Class Agreements – appropriate ways of joining in, including others, holding doors open, saying hello and the like. Discuss bullying – ‘Tell a teacher’, Out of Bounds Areas. Develop some class agreements/norms together to put up around the classroom.

• Diary – summary of the Junior School Diary (including Code of Conduct, Homework, filling in notes, reminders, events).

• Uniform – outline expectations with regard to uniform, hair, jewellery, blazers, correct socks, Years 3 to 6 are not to wear the blue jumper as an outer garment to and from school.

• Sustainability – discuss compost, different bins, paper recycling, do not waste water and more.

• Cyber Safety – Orientation into the appropriate use of computers/iPads. Mobile phones are NOT to be used at school.

• Team Building – ‘getting to know you’ activities.

It has also been wonderful to see our Pre-Prep and Pre-Kinder students continuing their transition sessions as they work towards attending full sessions in the coming weeks.

Before and After School, and Vacation Care
Club House Boot Camp run our Before and After School and Vacation Care programs in our Junior School. Please visit their website https://www.clubhousebootcamp.com.au/ to register and find out more about this service.

Drop-off and Pick-up  (A map and explanation can be found later in this Newsletter)
The extra drop-off and pick-up lane seems to be working well with traffic flowing nicely at pick-up time at the end of the day. Hopefully this continues once our ELC groups begin their full days in the coming weeks. Just a reminder that everyone should use the pathways and cross the road at the zebra crossings when entering or leaving the ELC or Junior School to ensure we all stay safe. A reminder to be extra careful when reversing out of carparks. Could I also please ask that parents do not double park in Maple Way/Cedar Place (particularly at the end of the court near the entry to the school) so our neighbours have easy access to their driveways. Families should also be aware of the ongoing roadworks and road closures on Sutton Street at the moment.

DON’T SPEAK OF WORDLE

I love words. I take great pride in my daily Wordle endeavours (for those not familiar with it, Wordle is an online word guessing game with a romantic backstory) although I refuse to join the hoards flooding our social media with images of their Wordle attempts! I can also be a bit of a pedant when it comes to words and grammar, much to my family’s amusement and sometimes irritation. A few phrases that are guaranteed to trigger a rant include saying “I’m excited for” when what you mean is “I am excited about”, referring to something as “based off of” rather than “based on” (As one fellow critic writes, “if a thing is “off of” something, it is not on a base, so “based off of” makes no sense!”), then there is my pet peeve – next time you are researching something, please search for it, do not “search it up”! And of course, don’t get me started on the butchering of metaphors by sports commentators and reality TV contestants alike! There are times when I want to take a leaf out of Gwen Stefani’s book and say to some people just ‘Don’t Speak’!

You do not have to be as pedantic as me to be concerned about words. We all know that words are powerful and what we say to people can have a profound effect. Why else would we be so concerned with what Barnaby Joyce said about the Prime Minister in a text message? The way we speak to each other says a lot about us, whether we are the leader of a political party or a part-time maintenance worker. One of the things I love about St Paul’s is that we have a positive culture around how we speak to each other. Students will regularly say “thank you” as they leave a classroom after a lesson. It is extremely rare for a student to swear at a teacher and in fact, any sort of disrespectful language is the exception rather than the rule. We are a school, full of children and adolescents who are still maturing, so it is not always perfect, but the cultural expectations are pretty good.

The Bible has a lot to say about how we should speak to each other. James talks about the difficulty of taming the tongue and the ‘wildfire’ that just a few misplaced words can ignite (James 3), Paul writes to the people of the church in Colossae to say, “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” (Colossians 4:6) and Proverbs 16:24 declares, “Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”

The return to in-person schooling has been wonderful and is certainly healthier for our children. As we spend more time together in the community it is important that the way we speak to each other reflects the sort of respectful and caring community that we strive to be. Even when we disagree on something, we seek to do so with empathy because, as Dr Mark Stephens points out, “Without empathy, we adopt one of two extremes: yell louder, or never speak at all. Neither is very helpful.” I may be fighting a losing battle against some of my personal grammar peeves, but I think I am ok with that if people are using bad grammar and mixed metaphors to encourage, compliment, nurture and celebrate those around them.

In that case, they can talk until the cows turn blue!

May your speech be always gracious, seasoned with salt and sweet to the soul.
