As we progress through Term 1, it has been really encouraging and exciting that many of our Year 12 students are booking appointments with me to discuss their future pathways. For those who are yet to do so, please email me to arrange a time. Students from all year levels are welcome to book a time, as are parents/guardians.  For students intending to complete work experience over the Easter holidays, please complete a green form from the Careers office as soon as possible to allow for processing time.

This newsletter contains important information regarding the UCAT with registrations now open and direct applications for ANU (Australian National University in Canberra) have also opened.  Please do not hesitate to get in contact if you have any questions.

UCAT

Year 12 students who are planning to sit the UCAT this year can now register for the test via www.ucat.edu.au
The booking deadline is 17 May at 11:59 pm (AEST)
You can book after this date (up until 5 June) but you will be charged a late fee of up to $185. The testing will take place between 3 July until 11 August.

You can start preparing for the test early by completing a preparation program via a private company such as:

Med Entry, www.medentry.edu.au

It is important to note that private companies are not endorsed by the universities that use the UCAT.

ACN Nursing and Health Expo Melbourne

The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) is hosting a Nursing and Health Expo on Saturday 1 April at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. You will be able to explore career pathways, research courses and speak directly to nurses working in a variety of practice areas.

Students are invited to participate in on-campus higher education institution tours during the upcoming term break. Tours will be conducted by student ambassadors and specialist course advisers and will generally run for approximately 45 minutes.

Study Law at Bond University, Gold Coast


Recently Bond University introduced a new law specialisation that focuses on the science and the human, social and commercial implications of climate change.  Students in the Bachelor of Laws have the option of specialising in climate law and practice by completing a Climate Law specialisation.  Interested students are encouraged to browse the website to familiarise themselves with the structure of the Bachelor of Laws course and browse the Climate Law specialisation and read the list of climate law subjects. 

 

Early Entry


At La Trobe University, there is more than one way into university. The Aspire Early Entry Program is a way to access an adjusted Aspire ATAR for your preferred course and secure an early conditional offer. For some Aspire programs, you can also gain a La Trobe Entrance Score as an alternative to your ATAR.

There are multiple streams to choose from, so if you have given back to your community, achieved good results in Year 11 or taken extra university studies, these will assist with your application to give you the reassurance that you have a place in your preferred course before you complete Year 12.

Selection is based on Year 11 results and a school endorsement.

Applications for 2024 entry

Current Year 12 students who intend applying directly to ANU for undergraduate study in 2024 are advised that direct applications opened on Wednesday 1 March and close on Monday 15 May.

Students can start their applications at any time and log back in, as needed, to complete the process.

Students will need to include their co-curricular activities with appropriate supporting documentation, as well as complete a Year 11 Results Form.

Students are advised to read through the Application Information before applying at Applying to ANU.

 

 

Work Experience


AFP – Forensics Work Experience Program

Applications are now open for the AFP Forensics Work Experience Program! The one-week program held in Canberra is for Years 10 to 12 students who want to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), particularly in forensic science.

The first course will be held in May 2023 and the second in September 2023. You have until 10 March 2023 to submit your application.  For more information on how to apply, visit: AFP forensics

 

Science Programs


MYSci, MONASH UNIVERSITY

MYSci is a three-day science program specifically designed for students who are in Years 11 and 12. The program will run from 12 to 14 April at the Clayton campus. Program activities will include:

  • hands-on workshops
  • access to brilliant teaching facilities
  • opportunity to meet Monash Research Scientists
  • exposure to potential career pathways
  • activities with the Young Scientists of Australia
  • social activities

Cost: $115 per student.

SCIENCE EXPERIENCE

The Science Experience is a fun one, three or four days of science activities for students in Years 9 and 10. Each program is designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating science activities under the guidance of scientists who love their work.  The program also provides information about further studies in science, technology and engineering. It highlights the wide range of careers that allow students to pursue their interests and abilities in the sciences.
The following two programs are running in Victoria:

  • Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre, Queenscliff
    Date: April 18
    Cost: $72
  • Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn
    Date: June 28 – 30
    Cost: $210

Scholarships

Scholarships for students with a disability

If you have a disability, it does not have to stop you from attending university. Alongside dedicated support services, many institutions also offer special scholarships for students with a disability.

Each year there are hundreds of scholarships that go unawarded because nobody applies – so it is always worth having a go.

Disability scholarships are often open to students with many different disabilities. This can include physical disabilities, learning and cognitive disabilities, sensory issues and even mental health issues.

Some particular scholarships may target students with a specific disability (for example deaf and hard-of-hearing students, students with autism) so make sure you read the eligibility criteria carefully before you apply.

The following are some of the scholarships for students with a disability:

Walter and Eliza Hall Trust Opportunity Scholarship – a scholarship worth up to $10,000 each year for a student with a physical disability to help cover educational expenses.

Vision Australia Further Education Bursary – provides adaptive technology to help students who are blind or have low vision to succeed in their studies.

Australian Disability and Indigenous Peoples’ Education Fund – provides small six monthly grants of up to $2,500 to assist people with disabilities to continue their learning.

Redkite Dare to Dream Scholarship – open to any teenager in Australia who has cancer or has had cancer at any point in their life. Teens can receive up to $5,000 to help them achieve a goal.

Northcott Scholarship Opportunities – support for people with a disability currently studying at TAFE, University or other Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Jobs Forecast


Where will the jobs be in 2026?

Jobs and Skills Australia produces employment projections to provide a much-needed guide to the likely future direction of the jobs market over the next five years.  Each year these projections are updated to reflect emerging trends and developments.  The latest data available are for the five years to November 2026, a summary of the projections is:

  • Employment is projected to increase across all 19 broad industries
  • Employment is projected to increase across all 8 broad occupational groups
  • 9 in 10 new jobs are projected to require post-school education

It is likely that 91.7% of new jobs will require post-school education and more than three-fifths of the total projected employment growth will occur in high-skill level jobs.

University Courses

Federation University – Sport, Physical and Outdoor Education

If you are thinking about a career in community sport and recreation or looking for a pathway into Health and PE (HPE) teaching, this Federation University degree is for you.

During the Bachelor of Sport, Physical and Outdoor Education degree, students learn leadership, teaching and people skills and put these into practice in a variety of settings.


Subjects studied are a blend of hands-on and theoretical work, and include outdoor leadership, fundamental movement, exercise physiology and fitness, swimming and water safety, biomechanics, outdoor living and travel skills and human development and nutrition.

This degree provides a strong foundation for a rewarding career in the sport and recreation and outdoor education industries.

The Bachelor of Sport, Physical and Outdoor Education degree offers two options to becoming a registered Health and PE teacher:
If after completing the first year, students have maintained a good academic standard, they may be eligible to apply for a transfer into the second year of the Bachelor of Secondary Education (Health and Physical Education Teaching).
Alternatively, students may opt to complete this degree and then continue into a Master of Teaching in either secondary or primary teaching and qualify as a Victorian Institute of Teaching registered teacher within 4.5 years.

Spotlight on Dental Technology and Oral Health Courses in Victoria


Dental technicians
construct and repair dentures (false teeth) and other dental appliances, including crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances (Good Careers Guide)

Oral health therapists diagnose dental decay and gum diseases, work together with dentists to provide routine oral health care for children and adults, and also help to promote oral health and preventive dental practices among school children and the broader community (Good Careers Guide)

Both of these professionals work together with dentists and dental surgeons.

There are many benefits of having a casual or part-time job including discovering your talents, understanding your strengths and developing lifelong skills such as time management, commitment, problem-solving and working in a team.  A few things to consider before applying are;

  • Work hours – will you be able to balance work with school, sport and hobbies?
  • Location – can you travel safely to and from work? Will you need someone to drive you there?
  • Employment status – will you be required to work at short notice or will you have set hours?
  • Physical activity – will the job involve heavy lifting, standing or sitting for long periods?
  • Workmates – will you be working with others or by yourself?
  • Supervision and training – will you be supervised and provided with training?

The best starting point once you have decided on an employer is to visit the store or business and speak to someone, remember first impressions count!
