view ARTICLE

Students often think they have to choose a career that is popular or what looks cool from the outside rather than what they may deem an ‘ordinary career’. For once, Hollywood has provided us with some fantastic movies that showcase people in ‘ordinary’ careers doing extraordinary things. The best part about these movies is that they are all based on real-life stories rather than fiction. Students often lament the necessity of maths and how it can be used in real life, we only have to watch the movie, Hidden Figures, to see how maths played an important role in the development of the space program at NASA. The King’s Speech shows how a speech therapist ended up working with the King of England and demonstrates that you never know who might walk through your door. The movie, Unstoppable, highlights the roles that our transport workers play in keeping us safe from disaster while transporting goods from one end of the country to the other. Then moving to Erin Brockovich, Julia Roberts does a fantastic job at showing how her tenacity and empathy not as a lawyer but as a legal clerk, found justice for so many people.

For me, what this highlights is that it does not matter what career you choose or how ‘uncool’ it is, it is up to YOU to make it cool. Whatever it is you choose to do, do it well and to the best of your ability and perhaps a movie might be made about your job one day and the impact you made!!

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.”  Winston Churchill

What does a Forensic Psychologist do?

The Australian Psychological Society states that a Forensic Psychologist uses their legal and psychological knowledge to help individuals, government employees and organisations navigate the legal and criminal justice systems.

In court proceedings, Forensic Psychologists use scientifically based principles to assess a client, collect evidence that relates to the psychology of the person, and table a report, and the report is then used in evidence.

Forensic Psychologists would be utilised for areas that include child protection, family services, alcohol and other substance abuse, rehabilitation services (such as pain clinics or head injury services), and research.

Maths and Science Prerequisites

The best way to meet the prerequisites requirements for Monash undergraduate courses is by undertaking them via your VCE or equivalent Year 12 studies.  However, Monash does accept a range of alternate options if students do not have the required VCE units or do not meet the study score.
Some of these are outlined at the link below.  These options are not a definitive list but do provide students with relevant and known alternatives that may help them with planning their course progression.

It is important to note students must complete at least one of the listed alternative options before they can access the destination degree.

For example, if a student is interested in the Bachelor of Commerce and has not studied Units 3 and 4 Mathematics Methods in the VCE, they could enter Monash’s Business, Arts or Science degree, undertake MTH1010 and then apply to transfer to Commerce.

Students are encouraged to browse Maths & Science Prerequisites to find out more.

Melbourne offers an exceptional diversity and depth of majors to match students’ career goals – with more than 40 areas of specialisation, from languages and psychology to economics and media and communication.

Arts Discovery is Melbourne’s flagship subject for all commencing Bachelor of Arts (BA) students.

It is an essential introduction to the diversity and distinction of research in the humanities, social sciences, and languages.

Amongst other things, students get to:

  • Complete this subject in their first semester in a shared study experience alongside every student commencing their Melbourne BA
  • Broaden their perspectives by connecting with Melbourne’s welcoming, vibrant Arts community through interactive seminars and interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Learn how Arts research drives innovation and understanding in areas including sustainability, indigeneity, technology and diversity and inclusion
  • Access helpful resources, such as skills and mental health supports, that can help you succeed during your BA journey and assist students in becoming job-ready.

Bachelor of Commerce

Equip yourself with the skills and knowledge to understand and solve key business challenges. Make a difference to society, policy, and organisations while forging a pathway to a global career.

The Bachelor of Commerce has six majors a student can choose from in their first or second year.

*Students need to start subjects from these majors in their first year because of accreditation requirements

Students can also decide to do a double major, combining any two of Accounting, Economics, Finance, Marketing and Management.

In the first semester all students participate in a Discovery subject titled Sustainable Commerce to gain a true cohort experience and explore how Commerce skills can apply to real-world problems.
Students learn how to use different types of business and economics knowledge to understand risks and opportunities that deliver a positive social and environmental impact, as well as financial and economic benefits to organisations.
Students also get to discover the challenges for business and economics disciplines in creating sustainable commerce by using case studies, teamwork and online materials.
They learn to incorporate Indigenous ways of knowing by looking at the importance of people and place, respect and inclusion in decision-making in this unique subject.

Concurrent Diplomas are also offered to Commerce students.  These diplomas can be studied alongside their undergraduate degree.  Diplomas offered include Computing, Mathematical Sciences, Music or select languages.
