This is the last newsletter for this term – and what a term it has been!

Despite Melbourne still being in lockdown, there are many, many virtual opportunities to be involved in, and again, this is not just for Year 12 students!

Over the holidays, all students are encouraged to try out something new, explore an area that might open up opportunities and generally take the time to ponder.

As our Year 12 students completed their final SACs this week and their course content, we wish them a relaxing holiday to regroup and prepare for their final exams next term. We are incredibly proud of their efforts this year under unusual circumstances, their perseverance to complete tasks, prepare themselves for what is to come and being able to embrace new ideas and future planning, have been remarkable.

Humanitarian STEM jobs making a major impact

When we think of humanitarian and social impact careers, we often think of legal aid, education and social work-type gigs. Cassie Steel from Careers with STEM, has identified three science, tech and engineering jobs making a massive impact on others. These include:

Epidemiologist
These guys spend their time focusing on diseases – how they are caused and spread but also how they can be contained and prevented – in vulnerable communities. Disaster relief teams rely on epidemiologists to investigate outbreaks (think: COVID-19 or meningitis and cholera in an over-populated refugee camp), which often involves managing large-scale studies and mining massive data sets to support health campaigns and programs.

Geographic Information Systems Analyst
Experts in geographic information systems use their navigation, map-making and data processing skills to assist when disasters, like earthquakes, floods and human conflicts, strike. They create maps to assist in situ field workers in accessing hard-to-reach places, as well as process geographic data to predict, prevent and improve response time for future scenarios.

Agronomist
Agronomists traditionally study plants, animals, soil and cultivation techniques to improve the productivity and sustainability of farms and agricultural industries, yet act as key specialists on food security when extreme climates or conflict hit. The agricultural scientists reasses the use of effected farmlands in struggling environments and offer solutions on reducing famine and maintaining a steady crop supply.

Open Days

Open Days provide an amazing opportunity to research courses, hear from lecturers and experts, get inspired about the possibilities for your future and ask questions about pathways, student services, accommodation and scholarships.

If you have an occupation in mind such as accounting, social work or zoology, it can be difficult to understand exactly what a course in this area entails.

What will you study?

Which university offers the best course for me?

What subjects will I study?

What graduate jobs can I explore?

What related occupations could I consider?

What backup courses should I consider if I don’t achieve the required ATAR?

Will I complete industry experience?

If you do not have any courses or occupations in mind, participating in webinars focused on general interest areas you have (for example social justice, animals, mathematics, creative arts, IT) can assist you in identifying courses that may interest you.

So if you love mathematics, you may explore courses in engineering, surveying, data science, actuarial science, cyber security, or a general Bachelor degree with a major in mathematics.

Missed Open Days? No worries!
Most universities have either recorded the webinars from their open day events and have made them available ‘on demand’ or have uploaded information videos to their open day websites.

You can watch recorded webinars on courses, pathways, scholarships, accommodation, early entry programs, student services, and clubs and societies. You may need to register your details to access the videos on demand.
