Welcome back to Term 2, we are well underway already.

Congratulations to the students who undertook a work experience placement during the break, the feedback from the employers and the students has been extremely positive. Applications for the mid-year holidays have opened and will close on Friday 14 June. If you are not sure where to begin looking for opportunities, please make a time to speak to me in the Careers office.

If you are considering applying for medicine this year, please note that registrations for the UCAT assessment close on 17 May. The UCAT ANZ assesses a range of abilities identified by universities as important in the fields of medicine and dentistry. Students only sit this in Year 12. Do you love the outdoors?

Have you considered a career being an outdoor leader? Holmesglen offers the Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership course – perfect for students who love the outdoors.  With the demand for outdoor guides in Australia at an all-time high, this Free TAFE course is a great stepping-stone to employment.

This course prepares students for the outdoor education/adventure industry and focuses on training learners to assist or guide a wide range of outdoor activities.

Specific skills are developed in bushwalking, canoeing, white water rafting, high ropes courses, rock climbing and abseiling.  The course is ideal for students with a strong interest in the outdoor environment and a sense of adventure.  Having the opportunity to work in the outdoors and facilitate enriching and life-changing outdoor experiences for other people is a fantastic lifestyle.

Examples of the types of roles you might be employed as are: an Outdoor Guide, Outdoor Education Group Leader, Activity Leader, Adventure Tourism Guide and Bush and Adventure Therapy Worker.  You may also choose to continue studying and enrol in the Diploma of Outdoor Leadership.

VCE and Careers Expo
Once again the VCE and Careers Expo will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

An extensive range of exhibitors from all over Australia will be in attendance providing:

• Information and resources for the VCE
• Information about tertiary study, university, TAFE and training courses
• Career and study advice
• Employment advice and opportunities
• Apprenticeship and traineeship advice
• International exchange and gap year programs

Attendees will also have access to VCE and Careers Expo: Seminars throughout the day.

Simpson Barracks Open Day
The Simpson Barracks Open Day will be filled with interesting and engaging military displays and demonstrations.  Explore the displays, interact with soldiers and learn about their daily lives.  Witness thrilling demonstrations and enjoy this fantastic opportunity to experience military life up close and personal.

This event is being developed to showcase the variety of careers in the Army and Defence, students in Years 10 to 12 (along with their parents) are encouraged to attend.  The Royal Australian Army Corps of Signals Museum and Royal Australian Army Pay Corps Museum are located at Simpson Barracks.

Collarts Open Day
Collarts will be hosting its first Open Day for 2024 on Saturday 11 May.  Students are invited to go along and experience all things offered by Collarts, from their passion for creativity, close community, state-of-the-art facilities, expert faculty and more.

Discover Monash Events
Monash University will be hosting several Discover Monash events or activities over the coming weeks.  Unless specified online**, these will be face-to-face events.

Participating in one or more of these events will assist students in making informed choices about their study options after Year 12.

Magnify Winter Music Camp
During the winter term break, Box Hill Institute is holding the Magnify Winter Music Camp, a high-level music intensive for students wanting to fast-track their careers and boost their skills.  Meet other high school musicians (aged 14-18) and take part in this unique music camp where you will develop the real-world skills you will need in your music career.

During this week-long camp, students will get to participate in daily tutorials, workshops and collaborative sessions, getting the opportunity to develop skills in songwriting and composition, improvisation and arranging.  Students will also record a real studio session in Sing Sing East and take part in workshops in social media and online marketing to promote their music.

Date:               Monday 8 July – Friday 12 July 
Time:               9:30 am – 4:30 pm each day (with a concert on Friday night (6:00 pm – 7:00 pm)
Cost:                $450

Numbers are restricted to 30 participants, and entry is by audition (video, submitted by email).

Residential Colleges Open House
Are you looking to attend the University of Melbourne and would like to check out on-campus living? The University of Melbourne has ten Residential Colleges, and they are holding an Open House event on Saturday 11 May.  Attendees can hear from current students, meet the academic and pastoral care staff, learn more about residential scholarship programs and discover the best of residential college clubs, societies, events and leadership opportunities.

Lunch and refreshments will be served across the Colleges on the day.  There will be tours between 12:00 pm and 3:30 pm, as well as information sessions about courses and admissions at 12:00 noon and 3:30 pm.

Bachelor of Actuarial Science/Master of Actuarial Studies
Monash has introduced the new four-year, integrated vertical double-degree allowing students to fast-track registration in this growth industry.  The Bachelor of Actuarial Science and Master of Actuarial Studies allows students to complete the Foundation Program and the university component of the Actuary Program which is designed to get the maximum number of exemptions within the shortest time.
Students cannot practice as an Actuary without meeting the registration requirements of the Actuaries Institute – Becoming an Actuary | Actuaries Institute.

The Deakin Guaranteed ATAR provides access for more students, so you can secure a place in the course you want. Deakin is providing lower upfront guaranteed ATARs for eligible students from under-represented cohorts at Deakin.  So, this may mean students who:

• attend an under-represented school – see list here
• live or study in a regional or remote home or school location or
• are of Indigenous Australian descent

This provides students with more certainty, reduces stress and gives them the best chance to get into the course they really want.  Applications can be made through VTAC later in the year.

Where Can a Science Degree Take You?
Jobs in Science can vary depending on the major you select in your Science degree.  Students keen on finding out about the broad range of careers a science graduate can enter are encouraged to browse Where can a Science degree take you?  Students can watch a number of short videos of recent graduates who have all completed their Science (or double) degree in the past five years.  The diversity of careers these science graduates have been employed in provides reassurance about the flexibility of studying science at university.

Studying Nutrition and Dietetics at Swinburne
Swinburne’s nutrition courses help students explore the relationship between health and nutrition and gain a deeper understanding of how they are intertwined.  Students choosing to study nutrition studies gain an in-depth understanding of food sources, proteins, vitamins and minerals, and get to explore the complex relationships between anatomy, physiology and nutrition.
Students also get to work with a range of evolving food and health management strategies and examine the biological, psychological, and cultural impacts of our food choices.

Nutrition is offered as a major in the Bachelor of Health Science, and for students who wish to go on to become a Dietitian, there is also the Master of Dietetics on offer after completion of the undergraduate degree.

What Does a Computer Systems Auditor Do?
The Good Universities Guide states that Computer Systems Auditors are involved in the design and monitoring of control systems, which ensures the accuracy and security of data.  They also review an organisation’s computing environment and the use of their computer facilities.  Computer systems auditors provide managers with expert opinions about the reliability of results and operations of computer systems.  It is essential that computer systems auditors understand both the accounting and information technology implications of computer systems.

Successful Computer Systems Auditors: 

• are interested in business
• have accuracy and attention to detail
• are logical and analytical
• have good communication and interpersonal skills
• have good leadership skills

To become a computer systems auditor, students usually have to complete a degree in information technology, accounting, commerce, information systems or business information systems.
