Christmas Message

Three of our School Chaplains conducted two beautiful Christmas Assemblies at the secondary schools in Warragul and Traralgon yesterday. Reverend Daniel Lowe and Glen Treble were joined by Lynton Allan, who completed an artwork on stage in front of students, accompanied by a recording of ‘Here comes Santa Claus’ by none other than Bob Dylan. The artwork indeed ended up being a portrait of a very jolly Father Christmas. Lynton proceeded to explain Santa’s history, together with several other Christmas traditions including the date of Christmas Day (25 December) and the origins of Christmas stockings, Santa’s sleigh and the reindeer.

Lynton admitted that he loves the joys of Christmas as much as anyone and revels in the traditions and customary activities, but he also reminded us of the real joy of Christmas. Lynton presented and spoke about a second Christmas artwork, depicting a newly born baby Jesus with Mary and Joseph.
It is my hope that, amidst the barrage of advertising and consumerism that dominates in the lead up to 25 December, we are all able to immerse ourselves in something more meaningful this Christmas. Jesus was born at a time when ignorance, greed and immorality were the order of the day. His birth signified a transformational moment, leading to a new way of life. I hope that this Christmas is an extra special one for us all, and a season in which love, care, forgiveness and hope prevail.

I wish everyone in our community a very happy, peaceful Christmas and a wonderful 2022.

Traralgon Junior School

From the Head of Traralgon Junior School,
Ms Tracey King.

This is our final Grammarian for 2021 and as the end of the year quickly approaches, I would like to acknowledge and thank our school community for their continued support and resilience throughout yet another challenging year. We are all very proud of our students and their individual achievements along with how well they have finished the year; engaging in learning activities, special events and our Step Up program in readiness for 2022. After facing significant challenges throughout the year, it has been lovely to enjoy some special activities as a school community at the end of this term.

Our Year 6 students hosted a fabulous Purple Day with a range of exciting activities that the rest of the school absolutely loved. The Relay for Life, twelve-hour walk, followed on the next day and although students were exhausted, they were determined to finish with smiles. Congratulations to everyone on their fabulous fundraising efforts of over $2,000 which has been donated to the Cancer Council.

Students were very excited last week as they made final preparations for the filming of ‘The Lion King’ musical. Despite not having a lot of time at school to rehearse, Ms Kuyken and students were able to organise costumes, sets, music and practise their songs in readiness for performing. The film will be available shortly for families to enjoy. Thank you to Ms Kuyken for her organisation and behind the scene work to ensure our students were able to enjoy this experience.

Students spent this week engaged in activities and lessons with their new classes and teachers setting themselves up for success in 2022. It was terrific to see how quickly students settled and connected with each other and their teachers.

The end of the week was a highlight with a whole school excursion to the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre where students swam in races, enjoyed the water slides, water play station and novelty competitions. Many thanks to Mr Billy Rilen for his organisation of the Junior School Swimming Carnival.

Our Christmas Celebration is scheduled for Friday evening and we are looking forward to enjoying a relaxed evening with our families gathering together in our school gardens. We will be treated to a number of musical performances and Christmas Carol singing. Many thanks to Ms Kuyken and our music teachers for their contributions to performances on the night. On the night Mrs O’Malley will launch the Year 5 and 6 Writing Challenge book. Our students are very excited to see their writing published in a real book. Thank you to Mrs O’Malley and our teachers for their hard work with students to bring this book to reality providing students with a meaningful writing purpose.

At last week’s School Library Association of Victoria’s annual conference Mrs Susan O’Malley was honoured with a special award.  The Penny Geoghegan Award recognises Susan’s long-time membership of the SLAV professional association, her work over many years as a Council member and Committee of Management member and in particular, her local network leadership where she consistently supported, inspired and actively facilitated a spirit of collegiate professional sharing and learning. Susan was instrumental in rebuilding the Latrobe Valley Branch after it being some time in recess. Congratulations to Mrs O’Malley on this wonderful award as she retires.

I would like to acknowledge our students and families for being so adaptable this year and for being able to adjust to the ever-changing COVID-19 guidelines and protocols and shifting to and from online learning. Some of us shared laughter and some shared tears as we navigated the challenges and rewards together. It has certainly been another unexpected year that has continuously thrown curve balls at us. We are indeed very lucky to belong to such a wonderful supportive school community.

Thank you to all of our teaching team, education support staff and administration staff who have worked with our ELC and Junior School students this year. We are very grateful for the amazing work and dedication of our team who have remained committed to the education and wellbeing of each young person in their care. Thanks also to our great support staff: maintenance team, gardeners, canteen staff, cleaning team, Before and After School Care staff and IT Department staff. A special thank you to all of the members of our FOSP (Friends of St Paul’s) group who have, despite COVID-19, restrictions still been busy supporting our school.

We say a special thank you to Ms Eileen Leigh for her time with us assisting in the Junior School office and to Miss Shayla Marsh who has been supporting our students in classrooms. Thanks also to Mrs Sarah Johnson for her work with or Year 5 class in Semester 2. Students and staff who are moving on to new schools are wished every success for their future. Our Year 6 students are encouraged to embrace all the new opportunities as they move into secondary school.

We will finish the year with the following events:
Friday 3 December  Christmas Celebration Evening, 7:00 pm

Monday 6 December  Year 6 Dinner Traralgon Winery, 6:00 pm

Tuesday 7 December  Year 6 Excursion to Inverloch Beach and Prep to Year 5 Activity Day
Wednesday 8 December  Presentation Assembly and final day of Term 4

As families finalise holiday plans please be aware of the following COVID-19 guidelines.

There are additional requirements in place for students and families who arrive from overseas (both returning local students and international students.)

•  All students, staff and other adults must avoid attending Victorian schools and boarding schools for seven days following arrival into Australia, regardless of vaccination status.
•  All students, staff and other adults, regardless of their vaccination status, need to have a negative PCR test on day 5, 6 or 7 to attend these settings.
•   If the individual is over the age of eighteen and has a medical exemption from vaccination, they must not attend a Victorian school or boarding school for fourteen days following arrival from overseas.

Finally, I wish everyone safe and restful holidays, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I will look forward to welcoming you all back for the start of 2022.

FROM THE LIBRARY

When we went into lockdown just as we were about to start Book Week there was a great deal of disappointment from students, parents and teachers that we could not celebrate with our usual Book Character Parade and while many of us dressed up at home it just was not the same. So when we had the opportunity to have another run we jumped at it.

The weather on Tuesday 26 October was glorious. Sunny and no wind and therefore perfect for a parade on the basketball court. We had everyone take part at the level that suited them.

Ollie as Dog Man.

Hunter as Mr Big Nose from The Treehouse series.

Shreya as Matilda.

William as Mr Piranha from Bad Guys.

We had an all-out effort with a massive Mr Piranha head, a string of saucepans for Mr Saucepan, one of the best Mr Chicken outfits I have ever seen and Mr from Worst Teachers. We also had some very clever improvisation with materials at hand to create Sam from The Fall, Matilda, The Koala Who Could, Pig the Monster, a shepherd from The Bible and Pinkalicious. A special mention of the Prep team dressed as Foxy and the Chickettes. Well done to staff, students and parents for all your efforts. It is so good to see you enjoying the day and celebrating the characters you love.

SPORT NEWS

SSV Academic and Sporting Achievement medal
Each year School Sport Victoria provides member schools one SSV Academic and Sporting Achievement medal for the end of year presentation. The medal recognizes the most outstanding student in your school who has achieved a high level academically, combined with a strong sporting contribution to the school.

This year’s SSV Academic and Sporting Achievement medal has been awarded to Phoebe Balcombe. Phoebe represented our school at the State Swimming Championships winning a bronze medal in the Girls 11-year-old 50m Butterfly. She also qualified for the Region Cross Country event. In PE Phoebe always demonstrates outstanding teamwork and encourages other students around her. In the classroom Phoebe has shown a commitment to improve and excel across all subject areas. Well done Phoebe on your efforts in what has been a disrupted and difficult year for students and student athletes.

ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Racquet Roadshow
Last Friday our Prep students received their very own tennis racquet to take home and keep as part of the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Racquet Roadshow. This initiative sees around 30,000 racquets distributed to first-year Australian primary school students every year. This was a great way for our Prep students to finish their tennis unit at school. Hopefully the opportunity of having their own racquet at home could lead to a future Australian tennis superstar coming from our school!

Traralgon Secondary School

From the Head of Traralgon Secondary School,
Mr Brad McCabe.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As the 2021 academic year comes to an end, I would like to take the opportunity to thank and farewell three staff members of the Traralgon Secondary School.

Garry Williams has been with the School for the last two years, and during his time, he has taught mostly Mathematics and sports classes. Garry has become a very popular teacher amongst the students, and we appreciate his kind and firm approach with each of his students. I would like to wish Garry all the best as he moves interstate.

Selena Waller has been with the School since 2012, where she has played a key role in supporting and developing our Individual Needs Program (IEP) and worked closely with many Traralgon Secondary students in supporting their learning profile. Selena has also volunteered her time to help out with special school events and school functions over the years. Selena has a wonderful way of working with our students, showing care and kindness to those she works with. Selena’s expertise and professionalism will be missed, and we thank her for her service over the last ten years. We wish Selena all the best.

Lois O’Meara has been at St Paul’s since 2015. Throughout her time at St Paul’s Lois has worked at both the Warragul and Traralgon Campuses. During this time, Lois taught our students how to cook up a storm safely. We would like to thank Lois for supporting the School’s co-curricular programs, such as the Catering Club. We wish Lois all the best and thank her for all the years of service to the School.

Presentation Assembly
On Wednesday 8 December at 9:30 am we will be conducting the Secondary School’s Presentation Assembly. It gives me great pleasure to invite families to this year’s event. We ask parents to park near the poolside of the building to assist with COVIDSafe protocols. Families will be seated in a designated section and are required to check in with the School’s QR code, showing vaccination status upon entry.

To help with arrangements, could families who are planning on attending please RSVP to mscott@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au no later than 4:00 pm on Monday 6 December as this will assist it seating and logistical arrangements.

All Traralgon Secondary students are required to attend the Presentation Assembly in formal school uniform, including their blazer.

Run for East Timor and Theatre Sports – Tuesday 7 December
On Tuesday 7 December, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, we will be holding our annual ‘Run for East Timor’ to raise funds for Friends of Ermera, an organisation that assists schools and community groups in the Ermera area of East Timor. Year 10 students who attended the Traralgon Campus this year are most welcome to return for the run, Kris Kringle with their former Mentor group and for Theatre Sports. Students can dress up in fancy dress for the run, with prizes and House points to be awarded for the best dressed, and the most laps run. If students do not dress up, they are required to wear House Sport uniform and bring a hat. The run will take place at the cricket oval on the school grounds. Icy poles can also be purchased for $1 on the day. Students who attend will need to sign in and out of the School and pay their $5 entry fee at the Secondary School Office.

COVID-19 Update – Overseas Travel
For those families who are planning on travelling overseas throughout the holiday break, please note the following requirements in place from the Department of Education:

Students, staff, families arriving from overseas
All students, staff and other adults must avoid attending Victorian schools and boarding schools for seven days following arrival into Australia, regardless of vaccination status.
All students, staff and other adults, regardless of their vaccination status, need to have a negative PCR rest on days 5, 6 or 7 to attend these settings.
If the individual is over the age of eighteen and has a medical exemption from vaccination, they must not attend a Victorian school or boarding school for fourteen days arrival from overseas.

2022 will be my ninth year at St Paul’s. I want to take this opportunity to thank our entire Traralgon community for their support over the last two years. It has undoubtedly been the most memorable out of the eight years at St Paul’s. I look forward to teaching many of our Traralgon students at the Warragul Campus in Years 11 and 12. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a lovely Summer break, have a chance to slow down and find time to spend with loved ones.

A FAREWELL TO REMEMBER!

Staff at Traralgon Secondary School recently organised a celebratory dinner to celebrate the achievements of our Year 10 students and to farewell them as they move into VCE. Students dressed to impress and enjoyed a lovely two-course meal while Verity Jeffrey and Joshua Verhagen delivered a heartfelt and warm speech about their time at the campus. Our Year 10 band ‘Room Eleven’ consisting of Ben Clark, Olivia O’Brien, Sophie Bray, Lachlan Wilson and Riley Richardson entertained the guests who were also treated to Sophie’s solo performance of ‘I’ll be there’, a song written by her just for the night. It was a wonderful way to celebrate our Year 10 students, who will be missed by all at Traralgon Campus, but we know they will relish the opportunities offered by VCE at Warragul and make many new friends and memories.

SPRINGTIME, TRAINS AND MINES!

Traralgon Year 9 students recently enjoyed a trip to Walhalla as a celebration of the end of their Year 9 studies. As well as enjoying the beauty of springtime in this picturesque town, students were excited to travel on the heritage train and learn about the local history on a goldmine tour. Teachers were also surprised by the vocal talents of the students, as nearly everyone sang a medley of songs on the bus trip home!

A TRIP TO THE SEA

As part of their study of Coastal Landscapes and Management, Ms Ender’s Year 10 Geography class spent a sunny day exploring Anderson Inlet and the Bunurong Coast near Inverloch. They examined the formation and erosion of the sand dunes at the surf beach and the creation of new and old coastal features.  Fish and chips in the park were enjoyed as a welcome break! Fieldwork excursions such as this play a vital role in the study of Geography as it is important for students to experience a chance to leave the classroom and apply geographical concepts and skills in the local environment.

PASS THE CHRISTMAS PARCEL

Pass-the-parcel has been a popular kid’s party game for as long as I remember. Dating back to early 1920s Britain, the basic idea is that a prize wrapped in multiple layers of paper is passed around the circle while music plays. When the music stops, the person holding it gets to remove a layer. The game continues until one lucky person unwraps the last layer and receives the prize. Some contemporary versions of the game have small treats hidden in each layer so that everyone gets some sort of reward.

Christmas in Australia today is a bit like a game of pass-the-parcel. The origins of Christmas have been wrapped in layer after layer of tradition until the prize at its heart has been thoroughly hidden. At our Secondary School Christmas services (at both Warragul and Traralgon) one of our chaplains, the Reverend Lynton Allan, unpacked – or should I say ‘unwrapped’ – some of these traditions and reminded us of the beautiful and mysterious story of hope that is the heart of the Christmas story. The moment when God became one of us to save all of us.

As you enjoy whichever Christmas traditions you and your family embrace, I encourage you to take a moment to ponder the origins of the tradition. You may find that each layer of tradition that you unwrap leads you closer to the most treasured prize at the heart of Christmas. Take the exchanging of gifts for example. Here is a sample from Lynton’s assembly talk which reminds us of the significance of gift giving at Christmas:

“The giving of presents is central to Christmas. It finds its origins in the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh the Magi had carried with them when they journeyed from the East to pay homage to the newborn Christ child. The wise men sensed that in this child God was reaching out to the world and the gifts they gave were symbolic of the life that lay ahead for Jesus. Gold was in recognition of royalty. The child who lay in a manger filled with straw and born in a stable was the unique revelation of God who energised and held the universe together. Frankincense was a sweet-smelling incense. This Christ child would bring the beautiful aroma of God’s grace and compassion to all whom he met and, in those encounters, would transform lives. Myrrh was a spice used in the embalming process of the dead. The wise men saw that this child would meet an untimely death but that somehow in the mystery of God good for all would come out of it. Through Jesus peace with God, love, hope, joy and eternal life would be God’s gift to all.”

Wishing you a blessed Christmas and a restful break,

The Chaplaincy team
Reverend Lowe, Mr Treble, Mrs Board and Reverend Allan.

2021 comes to an end!
The finish of the 2021 school year is just around the corner and what a year it has been. Much has been said and written but I know we have all worked extremely hard to make the best of every situation thrown our way! I am proud of the way our staff have worked and the Junior School community has continued to support our School and each other with the best of care.

Year 3 Camp: My thanks to Mr F, Mrs Murphy, Mrs Leighton and Mr Barkla and the Year 3 students for a wonderful three days at Merricks last week. The students enjoyed a range of activities with surfing, bush cooking and kite making some of the highlights.

Prep to Year 2 Athletics Carnival: Thanks to Mr Boraston for running another wonderful Prep to Year 2 Athletics Carnival yesterday. The students competed in a range of events and it was great to see all of the cheering and students supporting each other throughout the carnival. The icy poles went down a treat at the end and were well-deserved. Thanks to the staff and Year 6 Leaders who assisted on the day.

End of Year Reports: End of year reports will be available for families to view on MyStPauls today. The information on how to access these has been emailed to families.

2022 Junior School Leaders: Our 2022 Junior School Leaders were announced on Wednesday and I would like to congratulate all of the Year 5 students for applying for a leadership position. My thanks to Mr Barkla and Mrs Leighton for once again overseeing the process this year. An official handover from our current Year 6 students will take place at our Presentation Assembly next Wednesday.

Presentation Assembly: Our 2021 Presentation Assembly will be held in the Secondary School Gymnasium commencing at 9:30 am. Families are able to join us for this occasion and are respectfully advised that they will be required to, comply with face mask requirements and show proof of double vaccination via the ‘Services Victoria App’ for COVID-19. Parents will also need to sign an attendance register. We strongly advise our parents to arrive in plenty of time to allow the registration process to occur. The assembly is expected to conclude around 11:00 am. Students will then return to the Junior School. Should you wish to take your child/ren after the assembly, they can be collected and signed out from their classrooms. After School Care will still be available after school next Wednesday for families who require it.

Lions Club Public Speaking Competition: Year 6 student, Meg McInerney, has become the first student in the St Paul’s Junior School to win the finals of the Lions Club Public Speaking competition. Meg progressed through the four sections: School, Club, Zone and finally District to become the winner in the Years 5 and 6 age group. The Lion’s Club District extends from Endeavour Hills to Mallacoota and contains more than sixty Lions Clubs, so this is an impressive achievement!

Meg chose the topic of ‘Satellites’ in response to what she considered to be the best, ever invention and its impact on mankind. Meg’s speech was interesting and informative, and delivered in a way that held the audience’s attention throughout. We congratulate Meg on her success.

2022: A reminder that the 2022 school year commences on Tuesday 1 February for all Prep to Year 6 students and I will communicate to families in the new year with regards to any regulations or restrictions that may still be in place for schools.

Students, staff and families arriving from overseas: There are additional requirements in place for students and families who arrive from overseas (both returning local students and international students).
All students, staff and other adults must avoid attending Victorian schools and boarding schools for seven days following arrival into Australia, regardless of vaccination status.
All Students, staff and other adults, regardless of their vaccination status, need to have a negative PCR test on day 5, 6 or 7 to attend these settings.
If the individual is over the age of eighteen and has a medical exemption from vaccination, they must not attend a Victorian school or boarding school for fourteen days following arrival from overseas.

Thank You: As this is the final newsletter for 2021, I would like to thank all of the teaching and education support staff who have worked with our ELC and Junior School students throughout the year. I thank Mrs Melinda McKinnon for her work with our ELC children and families and wish her well in her move to the Bellarine Peninsula, Mr Alex Wilson for assisting with our music program this year and wish Ms Emma Hall and Mrs Emily Murphy well as they take leave next year.

Thanks also to all of our great support staff: Bec, Onnie and Luisa in the office, our maintenance team, our IT Department, cleaners, gardener, After Care staff, Finance Department, Admissions team, HR and Marketing team, Canteen staff, Bus Coordinator, Performing Arts staff, crossing supervisors and all of the staff in the secondary administration building. We wish Onnie all the best as her traineeship finishes with us at the beginning of next year.

Well done to all of our students and families for showing a great deal of resilience for much of this year, it has been both challenging and rewarding at various times, but we made it! We have all worked so hard, shared many laughs and a few tears along the way. Not to mention all of the ever-changing regulations and rules we have all had to follow. I wish all of the Year 6 students and the students and staff moving on to other schools, all the very best.

Finally, I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year, we all certainly deserve a good break, and I look forward to seeing you in 2022.

From the Head of Warragul Secondary School,
Mrs Leonie Clark.

A GLITTERING CELEBRATION
We recently farewelled our Year 12 cohort in a glittering evening of celebration. We were able to acknowledge and recognise student academic and leadership contributions as well as personal growth. All Year 12 students are congratulated for their perseverance throughout this unprecedented period in history and for the grace with which they managed the last couple of years. We are very proud of them.

The Valedictory Celebration for our 2021 cohort was conducted across two separate events hosted by our own staff in the secondary school. The first part of the evening was the formal component of the celebration with our parents/guardians under two very large marquees at the rear of our Year 7 Centre.

Our students were officially presented with their Graduation Certificates and many awards were presented. The Year 12 band lifted the roof of the marquee with their performance for guests and Josie Jones an alumna of St Paul’s shared her wisdom for a successful future. Our School Captains and Deputies were fabulous hosts and acknowledged the generous and unwavering support of their families throughout their many years of education at St Paul’s.
The second part of the evening was a dinner for our Year 12 students hosted in the Junior School Gymnasium which was transformed into a sparkling venue for a memorable celebration. Our sincerest thanks are extended to Lime and Co, Wheelie Good Pizzas, DJ Nige, The Little Corker Van, Alimentos Catering, Diamond Entertainment, Nerida’s Plants, Allambee Flower Farm and Lardner Park for their professional support of the evening. I would also like to thank our dedicated staff who worked so very hard in the lead up to this event, as well as throughout the evening to provide our incredibly resilient Year 12 students and families with an evening that we hope they will hold in their hearts for many, many years to come.

PRESENTATION ASSEMBLY
This year we are very pleased to be able to welcome our parents to attend our end of year Presentation Assembly. This is a very exciting development as this was simply not possible in 2020. Parents and guardians are warmly invited to attend the Presentation Assembly which will be held on Wednesday 8 December, commencing at 1:30 pm, in the Secondary School Gymnasium.

All students are required to attend and must do so in full summer uniform, including their blazer.

All parents and guardians are respectfully advised that they will be required to show proof of double vaccination on the ‘Services Victoria’ app for COVID-19. Parents will also need to sign an attendance register, as well as register via QR code at the gymnasium and upon arrival. We strongly advise our parents to arrive in plenty of time to allow the registration process to occur.

To assist with planning please RSVP to reception on 5623 5833 or by email to, stpauls@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au by Monday 6 December 2021.

PRIDEAUX GALLOP
Our 2022 Prefects are currently preparing for the annual Prideaux Gallop. This annual Christmas fun run will be held on Tuesday 7 December. All students are asked to make a two dollar donation which will be collected by Mentors in the morning for the privilege of participating in the fun run/walk in Brooker Park. Funds raised from this event will be donated by the Prefects to the Corey Maric Youth Support Foundation. Students are encouraged to dress up in the ‘Australiana’ theme and wear their house sport uniforms all day.

THANK YOU ALDI WARRAGUL!

We would like to acknowledge and give our thanks for the incredibly generous donation of $1,000 worth of goods from ALDI Warragul in support of Baw Baw Combined Churches Food Relief. Their substantial donation will be appreciated immensely by those providing support to families in our local community who are in greatest need.

BAW BAW COMBINED CHURCHES FOOD RELIEF
Many of us at St Paul’s will sit down to a beautiful table laden with delicious food and refreshing beverages that we will share with our loved ones this Christmas.

There is no doubt that this has been another very hard year for many in our community. Lost income and uncertain employment mean that once again and more than ever, many in our Baw Baw community may go without the basic necessities this Christmas.

Christmas is about giving and sharing and this Christmas we are asking our families once again to share non-perishable food items.

Outside the library we have once again set up the St Paul’s Christmas dinner table. The table is laden with Christmas spirit.

We are hoping that our families will embrace the spirit of Christmas and give a wonderful Christmas to others in our community by bringing and sharing non-perishable food.

Please consider sending your children to school with donations of non-perishable food products to fill the Christmas tubs at the display and help provide Christmas goodies to stock the shelves at the Baw Baw Combined Churches Food Relief Centre. We have included a list of items that are often needed by the Baw Baw Combined Churches Food Relief at this time of year.

Non-perishable foods needed this Christmas (Please check the use-by dates on your kind donations)
• Canned goods (pasta, baked beans, beetroot, corn, tuna, soup, tomatoes, fruit)
• Packets of pasta
• Christmas treats (chocolates, shortbreads, fruit mince tarts, Christmas cakes)
• Biscuits
• Tea bags
• Pasta sauces
• Jars of jam
• Two-minute noodles
• Boxes of cereal
• Packets of cake mix
• Savoury cracker biscuits
• Cordial
• Long-life milk and long-life custards
• Packets of jelly
• Packets of meal bases and/or simmer sauces

HOLIDAY SEASON AND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
Please note that there are currently additional requirements in place for students and families who arrive from overseas (both returning and local students and international students).

TERM 1 2022
Term 1 will commence for students on Tuesday 1 February 2022. We look forward to spending the first day taking those very important school photographs, inducting our 2022 school leaders and settling the children into their school routines. Students are required to wear their summer uniform and bring their blazers for their annual formal school photograph. Boys will need to bring their school ties and all students are required to wear the correct socks. Children are reminded to remove their holiday jewellery and nail polish before returning to school after a lovely long and a much-needed break.

NAPLAN SRT TEST
Our Early Commencement Year 8 students will be sitting a NAPLAN School Readiness Test (SRT) next week. This test does not collect data on individual students as it is simply a test we are required to undertake to ensure that we are ready for the new online version of the NAPLAN testing in 2022. The testing will also occur in the Junior School at exactly the same time so that we can determine and identify any potential technical concerns well ahead of 2022. If you have any concerns about the NAPLAN SRT test please do not hesitate to contact Ms Alice Zanella.

YEAR 7 ORIENTATION
Our 2022 Year 7 students were able to join us for three exciting days of orientation earlier this week. Many new friendships were forged as the divine weather provided the perfect backdrop to the commencement of their journey with us in the secondary school. Mr Matthew Shearing has been anticipating the arrival of the new cohort for many months and was very pleased with the way the students have managed the transition to this next exciting phase in their educational journey. Many questions were asked and new things were discovered as students quickly settled into their new spaces and explored our beautiful grounds. We hope our 2022 Year 7 students enjoy their Christmas break and look forward to their first day next year when they will arrive in their shiny new uniforms ready for their very first school photo at secondary school.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP DAY

Friday 26 November saw our 2022 Prefects, House Captains and Deputy House Captains, Year Level Leaders, SRC Representatives, Peer Support and Co-curricular Captains have the opportunity to participate in Leadership Day. Facilitated by the energetic and engaging presenters from ‘Burn Bright’, our students were engaged in a day of activities designed to help develop their leadership capacity and most importantly, have some fun. After another year of missing several special events, it was so rewarding to be able to give something back to the students and to see their smiles and hear their laughter throughout the day.

Our student leaders partook in sessions promoting what it means to be a leader, the importance of clear communication and the need for teamwork. It was pleasing to receive positive student feedback after the day and it is hoped that those in attendance were able to leave feeling excited and empowered to perform in their new roles.

Mr Davis Ellis
Deputy Head of Warragul Secondary School

JAPANESE IMMERSION INCURSION

On Thursday 25 November, our 2022 Year 12 students had a Japanese immersion incursion at school. We normally have a Japan trip every second year but due to COVID-19, we have not been able to organise a new trip yet. However, the new online communication platform made this immersion incursion possible and students had lots of interaction with Japanese people through the screen. We also had four Japanese speaking staff from school and outside of school to support the students for the day. Thank you Dewhurst sensei, Ayano sensei and Alicia sensei for your great support.

The day started with a traditional Japanese morning exercise. Then students created paper made of recycled paper milk cartons. It was not as thin as Washi paper but they enjoyed the activity and showed great creativity. After that, a Japanese Anime illustrator taught students how to draw an Anime character called Tanjiro from Damon’s Slayers via Zoom. The Anime illustrator explained the technique in Japanese showing her screen. At the end of the session, we all drew our own version of Tanjiro.

After a yummy Japanese bento lunch, we started the Zoom meeting with our sister school, Hinode Gakuen’s Year 10 students and teachers. Students joined breakout rooms combining St Paul’s and Hinode students. They introduced themselves first, then had time for discussion. Students talked about various topics from school life to pop culture in Japan and Australia. It was great to see the students enjoy speaking Japanese and they seemed to recognise that learning a language is not just for study but for communicating with people living in another part of the world. At the end of the day, many students mentioned that this activity was the best part of the incursion.

We finished the day by watching a great Calligraphy performance. Mr Fujia came to visit our school in 2019 and some lucky students had the chance to see his live performance. However, some students missed this opportunity. Thanks to Takasago City’s international department’s IT support, the whole session went very smoothly. Mr Fujita made two artworks, one is “必勝” which literally means “Victory”. This is a popular word for students who are expecting to have an important exam. Mr Fujita picked this word to wish success in the final year of school for our students. He also wrote “虎” which means “tiger” which is 2022’s zodiac animal. He wished for the students to be strong and healthy. Our students also had the opportunity to ask various questions of Mr Fujita about how he picked the career to become a professional calligrapher. He answered all questions sincerely and the students were inspired by him.

It was a great opportunity for students to motivate themselves to continue learning Japanese. Speaking another language can be overwhelming but it seems that the students overcame their fears and now truly enjoy being able to speak Japanese. The whole day of Japanese immersion was a very positive language and cultural experience for all involved.

Noriko Teranishi
Japanese Teacher

PERFORMING ARTS

‘Alice in Wonderland’ Warragul Secondary School’s production for 2021
or ‘Falling down the rabbit hole… and learning to climb back out again!’

It seems quite fitting in retrospect that in this second year of COVID-19, we embarked upon a comedy version of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ as our dramatic production for 2021. Our intention was to try to rebuild student performance skill and confidence after a year of cancelled productions and concerts and do something fun that would invigorate our program after a challenging year. Like its namesake, our production seemed to tumble down a rabbit hole of challenges entering an absurd world that seemed strangely familiar and yet so different from anything that we had encountered previously.

Despite the continued challenges of lockdowns and cancelled in-person rehearsals, we bravely continued on Teams and vowed to keep going. Sets were built and painted and costumes sourced and upcycled to suit the show in readiness for a return to school. (I am very thankful for the team of incredibly hard-working staff and parents who assisted us in this regard.) Unfortunately the hope we placed in updated guidelines that would enable our School community to view the show came too late for our scheduled West Gippsland Arts Centre dates. Like Alice, our determination to find a way out of the rabbit hole we had found ourselves in increased and we forged on with a plan. The set was built in the Parker Centre, and the students gathered for a day of selected scenes for performance and photography, enabling us to honour their hours of hard work across a year of in-person and on-screen rehearsals. We were very pleased that students from our graduated Class of 2021 managed to return for their performances; their ongoing dedication and commitment to the show was greatly appreciated.

Perhaps “believe[ing] six impossible things before breakfast” is the key to success? I am so proud of our students’ resilience and enthusiasm across a very long year. When it would have been very easy just to give up, they kept going with the simple belief that we could make the show happen. The memories they have made and the personal growth they have demonstrated will stay with them forever. Perhaps all of us involved in Alice will reflect on what we have learned together and exclaim, “I know who I was when I woke up this morning.  But I think I’ve changed several times since then.”

As a final tribute to the work of many, the Parker Centre Foyer remains an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ artistic installation of sets, costumes, props and performance photos for the students and staff to enjoy.
We look forward to being able to share images of the performances with the School community in due course.

Co-curricular Performing Arts Event Coordinator
