“It’s funny how, in this journey of life, even though we may begin at different times and places, our paths cross with others so that we may share our love, compassion, observations, and hope.  This is a design of God that I appreciate and cherish.”
Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience.

The various end-of-year celebrations that occur in the last weeks of Term 4 remind us of journeys taken as well as destinations reached and new paths that await.  This happens at various stages of schooling and in life generally, but the most significant point for many students is the time that they completely finish their time at school.  For one of our Year 12 students this year, there was a unique significance.

On Friday 8 November, it was a special farewell for our 2019 Year 12 graduate, Roshaun Watson.  Roshaun joined the Warragul Secondary staff for morning tea and thanked all her teachers for their care and hard work in helping her to succeed in her education at St Paul’s.  We thank Roshaun for choosing us and wish her every success and happiness in her career with the ANZ Bank.  We will always treasure the time Roshaun was with us here in Gippsland and we sincerely hope that St Paul’s will always be a special part of her life as well.

Traralgon Junior School

From the Head of Traralgon Junior School,
Mrs Gwen Hunter.

Dear Parents,

Once again we come to the end of another extremely busy couple of weeks.  The myth that schools wind down at the end of the year is certainly just that… a myth!

Since the last Grammarian all students from ELC to Year 6 have been trained in First Aid by St John Ambulance, Prep to Year 2 students have continued on with their swimming lessons, ELC have visited the Fire Station, Year 5s completed and presented to the Years 3 to 6 staff and students their speeches for leadership positions in 2020, Year 6s competed in their annual MasterChef bake off, we had a very moving Whole School Remembrance Day Service, the Years 4, 5 and 6 students were involved in a Personal Development talk and the Years 5 and 6 girls represented the school in a cricket competition, oh and not to forget all the fabulous learning going on around the school!

PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM
Peer support this week was centred around the types of friends we all might have.  Students explored what encourages them to form friendships with different people (common interests, admirable qualities to name a few).  Through various activities the students identified that their friends can fall into categories such as ‘best friends’, ‘friends’ and ‘people we know’.  Students also discussed the fact that friendships can change over time for various reasons.

FAMILY FISHING DAY
It is with great disappointment that due to access conditions and the forecast for more rain in the coming days, the decision has been made to cancel the Family Fishing Day.  Consideration will be made to see if the event can be rescheduled for a date early in the new year.  Those that had responded will be contacted directly about a refund.

ARTHUR REED PHOTOS
We would like to inform our families that we are changing to the services of Arthur Reed Photos in 2020.  Arthur Reed Photos have been in operation since 1960 and are a family owned and operated firm.  We are pleased to work with Arthur Reed next year as they are the first large scale photographic supplier to be able to offer our families a new and unique ordering platform.  We hope that this will make ordering, purchasing and the receiving of photos convenient and easy for our families.
Through their unique online platform, families will be able to experience the following benefits in 2020:
•  The ability to view your photos before ordering
•  All photo orders will be sent directly to your nominated address
•  Online ordering, with multiple payment options and package versatility
•  Families will be able to order exactly what they would like with an easy to use drag and drop package ordering system
•  A customer service team available during business hours to answer any questions or to assist with placing your order.  If you are unable to phone, emails are monitored and answered daily
•  Sibling and family photography will still be available for families with children at the ELC, Junior and Secondary Schools.
More information regarding the ordering and registration process will be circulated and we hope our families will enjoy the extra services that Arthur Reed Photos are able to provide.

WRITING CHALLENGE AND BOOK LAUNCH
Over the past month the Years 5 and 6s have been challenged to write a short five hundred word story for a writing challenge set down by Mrs O’Malley and Mr McGrath from the Secondary School.  During the process the Year 9 students have become mentors and advisers to the writers, discussing together ways in which they could improve on their entries.  The most impressive of the stories are going to be put together and published as a book.  On Thursday 28 November at 4:00 pm in the Library, well known author Scot Gardner will be visiting the school to launch this exciting book of stories.  During this launch there will be an opportunity to purchase a copy of the book.  Please see your child’s teacher or Carlie in the Office for an order form.

ORIENTATION DAYS
Just a reminder that Orientation Day for Years 1 to 6 is coming up on Tuesday 3 December from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, this is a time when students will get to spend time with their new teacher and classmates for 2020 and to meet any new students joining the school.  The Year 6 students will spend three days at the Secondary School beginning on Monday 2 December.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION
On Friday 6 December the school will be hosting our annual Christmas Celebration from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Please feel free to come along to this casual, relaxed style evening where the school community joins together with Christmas music and performances by the students being held during the evening.  Craft activities, a bouncy castle, face painting, FOSP BBQ, fairy floss and plenty more will be on offer.  We look forward to seeing you there. (There may even be a very special guest visiting sometime during the evening!)

All the very best for another great couple of weeks!

Grandparents and Special Guests Day
Grandparents and Special Guests Day was another great success last Thursday with the weather threatening at one stage but being kind to us in the end.  We had over five hundred and fifty visitors attend and enjoy visiting classrooms, the STEM Centre and the Kitchen Garden.  I thank Bec, Luisa, Lou and all of the parent helpers for organising and serving morning tea.  I thank our grounds and maintenance team who assisted with parking and setting up the gym.  Well done and thanks to Mrs Davies who coordinated our assemblies and all staff who assisted on the day to ensure our guests were made to feel welcome.  It is always a lovely time to see our students so happy to show-off their school to their guests.

Movember
You may have noticed that all of the male staff in the Junior School are sporting a moustache as they take part in Movember this year.  Initiated by Mr Timmermans, Movember promotes men’s health and wellbeing and whilst some mos are coming along better than others (without naming names) this is a great cause and should any families wish to support the staff, please follow the link below:

State Gymnastics Champion
Our congratulations go to Zac Mansfield (Year 6) on his recent results at the State Championships for Gymnastics.  Zac represented the Warragul Gymnastics Club at the Geelong Arena and finished first overall in his division.  What an amazing effort by Zac to achieve this outstanding result!

Prep to Year 2 Soirée
Well done to all of the Prep to Year 2 students who performed at their soirée last night.  It is always wonderful to see our youngest students being given the opportunity to participate and perform at the soirée.  This was our final one for the year and I thank Mrs Davies and the Year 6 Leaders who assisted and hosted all of our soirées this year.

Transition into 2020
Preparation for moving from one year to the next is really important for all students and our transition programs are now in full swing.  Our 2020 Preps completed their second session today and on Friday 29 November our 2020 Pre-Kinder and Pre-Prep learners will attend their transition session (there will be no sessions for our 2019 Pre-Kinder or Pre-Preps on this day – Friday 29 November).  Our current Prep to Year 5 students will spend time transitioning into their 2020 classes on Tuesday 3 December, whilst our Year 6s will begin Early Commencement at the Secondary School on Monday 2 December and attend for three days.  Parents should have received notification of our proposed class teachers for next year via email today.

What’s Coming Up
With the school year quickly coming to an end and to assist parents to know what is happening during an extremely busy time for everyone, please note the following important information:
Our Annual Walk to School will be held next Wednesday 20 November while our Prep to Year 2 Athletics Carnival will also be held on this day on our Junior School ovals commencing at 9:15 am.
The 2020 Junior School Leaders will be announced at a Prep to Year 6 Assembly on Monday 25 November (2:30 pm in the Junior School Gymnasium).
On Wednesday 4 December our ELC will hold their Night of Celebration in the Junior School Gymnasium commencing at 5:00 pm.  The final day of ELC classes will be Friday 6 December for the Rosellas and Firetails and Tuesday 10 December for the Blue Wrens and Kookaburras.
Staff are busy working on the End of Year Reports and Prep to Year 5 students will receive theirs on Wednesday 4 December while our Year 6s will receive theirs the following day.
Our annual Year 6 Dinner will be held on Monday 9 December (5:30 pm for a 6:00 pm start) in the Junior School Gymnasium.  We are looking forward to celebrating a special milestone for our Year 6s together with their parents or special guest.
Our final day of the 2019 school year will be on Wednesday 11 December with our Presentation Assembly beginning at 9:30 am to 11:00 am in the Secondary School Gymnasium.  This will be an opportunity for us all to celebrate the 2019 school year with each year level providing a short snapshot of their year and to wish our Year 6 students well as they complete their junior schooling.  Parents are welcome to attend the assembly and all students will return to the Junior School for final farewells.  Students are permitted to go home with their parents at 11:30 am.  After school care is available for families who require it (please let staff at Camp Australia know if your child/ren will be attending after school care on this day).  Buses will also run on this afternoon if required.

INTRODUCING LYNTON ALLAN

As this is my last Grammarian article for the year I would like to take the opportunity to introduce Lynton Allan.  Lynton will be acting as Chaplain at the Warragul Campus during Semester 1 of 2020 while I am on long service leave.  Mr Glen Treble will remain at the Traralgon Campus and will take on the role of Senior Chaplain in my absence.  Ms Deana Board continues as Chaplain at Warragul Junior School.

Lynton will be a familiar face to many as he has visited the school a number of times in recent years as a guest presenter and some of his artwork is on display around the school.  He is a gifted artist and storyteller with plenty of experience working in schools as a chaplain.  The following excerpt from Lynton’s website gives a sense of how he approaches his art and his ministry:
“ARTISTS ARE SEERS
I strive to take notice of all aspects of life encompassing the wonderful to the ordinary.  Art and storytelling is then the language I employ to interpret what I see and reflect on and make connections with others.
Seeing is to have your breath taken away with the beautiful and wonder filled dimension of life, not only in the grand and majestic but also in the small and over looked.
Seeing is also to be moved by the dark side of life.  Art seeks to embrace suffering, to empathise with the pain of others, to stand against the injustices in this world and reach out with compassion.
Seeing is to look at life differently.  Creativity is to reflect deeply and look for underlying connections, not to accept the status quo but be willing to go on a journey of enquiry and take risks.
Seeing is also to be open to the spiritual and sacred dimensions to life both within and out.  Art explores and embraces the possibilities of faith hope and love in one’s own life and others.”

I am sure that Lynton will be warmly welcomed into the St Paul’s community and I am very pleased to be leaving the chaplaincy role in such capable hands.

On another note, I am particularly conscious of the devastating impact of bushfires in NSW and Queensland right now (with concerns over what summer may bring for Victoria) and I invite you to join me in prayer:
All things look to you, O Lord,
to give them their food in due season:
look in mercy on your people,
and hear our prayer for those whose lives and possessions are threatened by fire.
Give protection and wisdom to fire fighters and other emergency service personnel.
Encourage our generosity to those who suffer loss.
In your mercy restore your creation and heal our land.
So guide and bless your people,
that we may enjoy the fruits of the earth
and give you thanks with grateful hearts,
through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
(Adapted from:  A Prayer Book for Australia, Broughton Books, 1999, page 205.)

While it seems a little early, I wish you all a blessed and Merry Christmas.  I pray that the holidays provide plenty of time for family fun, for rest and for recreation.  May you know God’s peace in the business of the season.

Reverend Daniel Lowe
Senior Chaplain

Arthur Reed Photos
We would like to inform our families that we are changing to the services of Arthur Reed Photos in 2020.  Arthur Reed Photos have been in operation since 1960 and are a family owned and operated firm.  We are pleased to work with Arthur Reed next year as they are the first large scale photographic supplier to be able to offer our families a new and unique ordering platform.  We hope that this will make ordering, purchasing and the receiving of photos convenient and easy for our families.

Uniform change for 2023
Traditionally in the Secondary School here at St Paul’s students have worn a maroon jumper in Years 7 to 9 and transitioned to a blue jumper for Years 10 through to 12.  As a school, we have decided to phase out the secondary maroon jumpers over the next three years.  We hope this will represent a cost saving for our families and will allow students transitioning from our Junior School to continue wearing the blue jumper they already have.  If you have purchased a maroon one or acquired one second hand, then your child can still wear that and then purchase a blue one to begin Year 10.  We expect that all students in Years 7 to 12 will be wearing the blue jumper at the commencement of 2023.  Any families who are yet to purchase a jumper can also purchase a new or second hand blue one.

Help us to help local families this Christmas
The end of the year is fast approaching and it will officially conclude at the end of our Presentation Assembly to be held in the gymnasium on Wednesday 11 December at 1:30 pm.  On this day we would like to ask families to bring along a donation which we will deliver to the Baw Baw Combined Churches Food Relief Centre to assist local families in need this Christmas.  We will provide tubs in the foyer of the gymnasium for you to leave your donation.  We hope that we can offer local families some much needed supplies this Christmas.  Canned or packaged food with an extended shelf life, such as tinned fruit and vegetables, packaged biscuits or jelly crystals, are in high demand and would be appreciated by this service.

2019 Semester 2 Reports
We were very pleased with the transition to digital report distribution in Semester 1 and families can access their child/children’s reports from MyStPauls at the end of this semester.
Please follow these steps to find reports:
1.  Log in to MyStPauls with your user name and password.
(If these have been misplaced, please contact the IT department at the school for assistance.)
2.  On the open page you will see your child/children’s names in the centre of the page.  Under each child there are a series of options.  One of these options is ‘Academic Reports’.  Click this button.
(If you have multiple children at the School, you will need to access the reports for each child separately.)
3.  The page that opens has a list of reports.  The Semester 2 2019 report will be at the top of the list.
4.  Click on the report.
5.  Depending on how you have configured your device, the report will either open straight away or it will save and you will need to open it from the saved location as per your browser settings on your device.
6.  Once opened you can read the report and print it (as per your device’s settings).

Mobile Phone Policy Change
Our Mobile Phone and Other Electronic Devices Policy has been reviewed by the staff and Executive team of the school and a number of small changes have been made which will come into effect for Early Commencement this year.  The policy will remain as it has been for all students in Years 7 to 9 but the change will affect our students in Years 10 to 12.  They have been allowed to access their phones during recess and lunchtime but they will now be required to have them on silent and locked in their locker during the school day.
An exert from the policy is included below with the change highlighted in bold text.
1.  Students must sign and return an ICT User Agreement before they are permitted to bring their mobile phones to school.
2.  Students who bring electronic devices to the school do so at their own risk.  The School will not accept liability for any lost, stolen or damaged items.
3.  All students are permitted to access mobile phones after the official school day, for appropriate purposes.
4.  At all other times, phones and other electronic devices brought to the school should be kept on silent and out of sight in students’ lockers (Secondary) or school bags (Junior).  At the Junior Schools students must leave their phones in their school bags or give them to their classroom teacher to mind for the day.
The exceptions to this rule are:
• When a staff member specifically permits the use of these devices for camps, excursions or educational purposes in class time.

We expect that we will not see mobile phones, electronic devices or associated accessories such as earbuds or headphones until after 3:30 pm.  As always, we do understand that some students will have a mobile phone as they are often required as a safety mechanism for our students who travel a great distance.  We would also like to reiterate to parents that the appropriate way to contact their child or children during the day is via Students Services. Student Services staff can get an urgent message to a student within a couple of minutes or for less pressing matters messages can be passed on before school, after school or during student breaks.  The direct line to Student Services is 5622 6103.

We look forward to the benefits this change will deliver to both the social and emotional needs of our students and their academic outcomes.

Head of Warragul Secondary School

MATHS SUPPORT SESSIONS

A Maths support session will be offered in Room 3 (Year 9 Centre) each Tuesday at the end of the school day.  This session will operate from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm and students are able to attend for all or part of each session as required.

Participants may use this session to get assistance with and complete homework tasks, seek an additional lesson on a particular Maths topic or simply work with other students who share a similar love of Mathematics with extension activities provided as required.  This session is primarily aimed at students from Years 10 to 12 although all Secondary School students are welcome to attend.  These sessions are additional to those already provided by teachers from the Maths Faculty which occur regularly at nominated lunchtimes.

No formal registration is required.  Students simply attend whenever they feel the need for some additional support or extension.

From the Head of Traralgon Secondary School,
Mr Stephen Klemke.

Exhibition Evening
This year’s Exhibition Night was a wonderful evening.  The range and quality of projects had to be seen to be believed.  There was a trailer, built new, from scratch, works of art, poem and song writing, and many other wonderful projects.  Thank you to all the students, parents and teachers who attended.  The students were clearly very proud of their projects, a pride that was reflected in their parent’s faces.  A special mention to Kirsten Enders and Nathan Byrne who taught Teaching and Learning from which these projects emerged.  I know they were as impressed as I was.

St Paul’s Traralgon Secondary School Leadership – new appointees for 2020

Donna Byrne
I am pleased to announce that Ms Donna Byrne has been appointed as Director of Learning and Teaching at the Traralgon Secondary School of St Paul’s from January 2020.  Donna is a currently teaching English at our Warragul Campus but was formerly a highly respected member of the English Faculty at the Traralgon Secondary School.  She is well known for her exemplary teaching and her passion for learning across a broad range of subjects.  Some of her previous experience includes English Key Learning Domain Leader, VCAL coordinator, VASS coordinator, VCE Coach, Evaluation Officer and Specialised PLC Leader.  Donna has also played a key role in the development and implementation of professional learning initiatives within St Paul’s.  It is with great delight that we welcome Donna back to the St Paul’s Traralgon community.

Chris Ambrozy
It is with great excitement that we announce that our new Director of Studies for St Paul’s Traralgon Secondary School is Mr Chris Ambrozy.  Chris is well known amongst the St Paul’s community for his passion and knowledge of STEM, coding and computer programming.  Chris’ previous career as an Engineer enables him to bring a wealth of practical applications and real life experiences to his teaching of STEM subjects.  He will be responsible for academic administration across the Traralgon Secondary School with respect to subject selection, examinations, programs and learning needs of students in VCE or VET at Year 10 and VSL or Distance Ed programs at Years 7 to 10.  We warmly welcome Chris to our Traralgon Campus for 2020.

Welcome also in 2020

Garry Williams
Garry is an enthusiastic Mathematics and Physical Education teacher who joins us from Maffra Secondary College.  Garry has been teaching Mathematics from Years 7 to 12 for six years and is known for his strength of relationship with students.  Welcome to Garry in 2020.

Farewell

David Ellis
David is moving to the Warragul Campus in 2020.  He was a foundation member of our school, a leader within the Science Faculty and an exemplary Director of Studies who is much admired by students and staff alike.  As he is remaining as part of the St Paul’s family, we are pleased we will still have access to his knowledge and guidance.  We wish David all the very best in 2020.

Andrew McGrath
Andrew is returning to Mirboo North Secondary College in 2020.  While only with us for one year, Andrew’s contribution to our school has been significant.  The upcoming book launch on 28 November is indicative of Andrew’s passion for his students and his innovative teaching ideas.  We wish him well in 2020.

Sue Brady
I think we have said farewell to Sue on two other occasions.  Of such value is Sue that we have kept on calling her to help cover staffing shortfalls.  She assures me she is retiring this time and while she may still help with some relief teaching, she is not in the market for another contract.  We say, never say never.  We wish her well in retirement.

The direct line to our office is 5175 9222.

We look forward to the benefits this change will deliver to both the social and emotional needs of our students and their academic outcomes.
