REAL TALK

Over the last two days we have enjoyed some wonderful sessions at the Warragul Campus by two guest presenters from Real Talk Australia.  To quote from their website, “Real Talk is all about getting real on the topics of sex, relationships and personal identity.  Based on Christian values and using personal sharing from a team of dynamic presenters, Real Talk provides presentations, programs and up-to-date resources.  We want all young people to know their true value, worth and dignity and to experience love for all it was created to be.”

This is certainly what we have experienced and benefited from as Gerard and Pia from Real Talk unpacked with students the benefits and hazards of online communication and the complexities of figuring out our personal identity and navigating relationships, intimacy and sex.

Some of the key messages that underpinned everything included:
•  The importance of treating everyone with love, respect and dignity.
•  Being reminded that we are all human beings, made in God’s image.
•  Knowing that we are not defined by our sexual urges.
•  Being reassured that no matter how anyone has treated us, we still have worth.

The following are some of the comments from students after the session:
“I found Real Talk very educational and interesting.  The presenters were very personable and integrated their personal anecdotes very well.  This made the presentation intriguing for our year levels whilst teaching us about how to approach the topics of love, sex and relationships.”

“It was a very informative talk.  I learnt many things about online safety.  I found that there are many unsafe people that use the internet.  There were new terms I learnt that will help me in the future such as sexting, grooming and catfishing.  I would definitely recommend this (presentation) to future students.”

“It was interesting to know the experience of how social media can have a big effect on your life and how putting yourself out there can lead to harming yourself and others like family.”

A number of students commented to me that they really appreciated hearing the material from visiting presenters because it was “less awkward” than hearing teachers talk about it.  While I certainly appreciate their point of view, I would also encourage parents to brave the awkwardness and continue to talk with their children about both their online world and about relationships, sex and identity.  When I look at many of the messages my kids receive from the media, a bit of awkwardness seems a small price to pay to give them a more positive perspective.

Perhaps you might consider raising the topic while driving to a family holiday destination.  I am sure the kids will love being a captive audience!

From the Head of Traralgon Junior School,
Mr Andy McNabb.

Dear Parents,

Well, we have got to the end of Term 3!  I am finishing the term on camp with Years 3 and 4 at Camp Rumbug, so this will be a slightly shortened version regarding the final fortnight.  Having said that, it has been a very busy end to the term.  I remember in the “good old days” when the end of term was a quieter, gentler run down to the holidays.  That simply does not happen any more and it is all systems go right up until the last minute.

In the last two weeks we have:
•  Collected over ninety Christmas boxes and then presented them to Lorraine from Samaritan’s Purse in assembly.  Mr Herbert joined us for the presentation and reminded us all that we loved receiving presents but it is also great to give gifts as well.
•  Congratulated Year 4O for their great efforts in the local writing competition, where they received a number of ‘firsts’ and highly commended.  When I met with them to find out how they had got on, as well as they had done with their actual writing, I was also delighted to hear about their exceptional behaviour at the awards ceremony.
•  Attended the Eisteddfod in categories too numerous to mention, with Year 3 Strings and Year 5 Band students performing as a group.  Year 3 won their group, whilst Year 5 were up against secondary students.
•  Our Strings and Band students have also performed for their families last Wednesday and Thursday.  It is wonderful to see the progress they have made both individually and as a group.
•  We had the small matter of ‘Footy Colours Day’ when Year 6 supervised the rest of the school in all sorts of skills sessions and huge amounts of pies were consumed!  The great activities were matched by fantastic weather which really made the day.
•  Purple Day happened!  This, of course is part of the build up to Year 6s attendance at Relay for Life early in Term 4.  This year will be the ninth time our students have spent the Saturday into Sunday session walking and we have had a research grant in our name on five occasions.  That is all I will write, as Alanna and Nick will give a fuller report in their section.

The View from the Classroom   Tuesday 18 September all of the students and some teachers wore something purple.  Everyone had to bring a gold coin donation, some students brought some money for Purple Day activities most of which were food stalls and some games.  The atmosphere was incredible, everyone was having fun and they were really excited about coming to our stalls!  Everyone had an amazing day!  Thank you to parents who helped us with our stalls and to those who gave money to their children so they could enjoy the fun.  All money raised is going to the Cancer Council.

•  We held the Prep to Year 2 Swimming carnival with all sorts of fun races and activities.  Many thanks to Mr Reed and his team for their help and organisation and once again to Mrs Harkins and our Year 6 students for the fantastic support and patience they provided.  This is one of those things we tend to take for granted as we have done it for years but the day would not run without them.  It is an important aspect of their leadership development.
•  Some of our Year 3 and Year 4 groups went down to the wetlands for a mapping and compass session, once again in beautiful weather.  A bit like food, Maths is so much better when experienced outside and our wetlands is the perfect spot to hold an activity like that.
•  Years 4 and 5 all marched around the wetlands last week to burn their licences (actually we ripped them up) and raise the Southern Cross flag as we re-enacted the events on Bakery Hill at the time of the Eureka Stockade.  Mr Herbert was again involved as he played the part of Peter Lalor and made a stirring speech to the assembled crowd.  As I left the scene, there was much cheering and shouting in response to his words.
•  Our Wombat group visited the hospital on Monday.  I was initially a little worried when I heard of their destination and saw them all getting on the bus but they had a great time with their soft toys being treated for various ailments.  They were finding out what it was like for those people who work in the hospital and what goes on behind the scenes.
•  And then to finish off the term Years 3 and 4 went off to Camp Rumbug at Foster North.  I was able to join them on this occasion and as I write, we are still here.  We tried to bring Kira with us but there is another school here, so she is enjoying a little holiday in the Prep classrooms and then at Miss Bec’s place.

I would like to finish by thanking you all for the huge Term 3 that has just concluded.  Whether dancing on stage, raising money for cancer research, watching chickens hatch, dressing up for the Book Parade, planting trees or re-enacting the Eureka Stockade at the wetlands, there has been so much going on in addition to all the work in class, every day.  Thank you to the staff for their dedication and all the ‘extra miles’ they do without thinking.  Thank you to the students for your enthusiasm and your sense of humour, as well as your ability to adapt to all the demands of school life.  And thank you to our school families for all your support and partnership as we try to do our best for these young people.

There will be an email which goes out to families in the second week of the holidays, which will have Term 4 dates and some more information regarding the term.  Have a lovely break everyone and see you again on Monday 8 October.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to reintroduce myself to my wife.  It is kind of like a tradition we have every holidays…

Sunhats
Spring is here!  With Term 4 approaching, it is timely to remind students and families about the summer uniform, especially sunhats.  Do you know where yours is?

Sunhats are not the highest priority for some students.  But did you know…

•  Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma diagnoses in the world.  Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of seventy.
•  In Victoria, more than 90,000 skin cancers are treated each year.  In 2015, 512 Victorians died from skin cancer, which is more than twice as many as the state road toll.  It is estimated Victorian public hospitals spend up to $55 million treating skin cancer each year.
•  But the good news is, almost all skin cancers are preventable.

From http://www.sunsmart.com.au/

One of the key strategies to prevent melanoma is to protect your skin.  So, if students do not have their sunhat they will be restricted to areas of shade during lunch and recess.

So please find your sunhat and put your name on it.

Thank you to our School Chaplain, Glen Treble and members of the SRC for organising our Footy Colours Day.  The day had a great feel and was a fun way to finish the week.  The gold coin donations raised $207.  Fight Cancer Foundation’s Footy Colours Day is a national fundraising campaign held during the month of September to support kids living with cancer.

As this will be the last Grammarian prior to the term break, may I extend my holiday wishes to all of our families.   A reminder that the Traralgon Secondary School Office will be open on the last Friday of the holiday break 5 October, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

SPORT NEWS

Interschool Gymnastics Competition
Our gymnasts travelled to Melbourne to compete at the Interschool Gymnastics Competition at Altona on Tuesday 4 September and Wednesday 5 September.  All our eight students competed really well and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  Most of them competed against competitors who do a lot more hours of training.  Tatum Cotterrell claimed second for her individual performances in the A1 section, our team in the A2 section managed third place and Molly Van Berkel placed third with her individual performance.  A special thanks to Ms Enders who attended all of their early Friday morning training sessions and Ms Witney for driving the bus down on the day of competition.  Mrs Helen Kooloos from the Warragul Campus attended the Wednesday competition which was greatly appreciated too as Hannah Lipscombe and Annalise Strini competed in Division Four where they placed second.

Our gymnastics team:  Back – Tatum, Tabitha, Hannah and Miriam.  Front – Molly, Charlotte and Tamsyn.

SEISA Spring Carnival
On Thursday 6 September we held our SEISA Spring Carnival.  We had a girls Years 7 to 9 AFL team, Junior and Intermediate boys netball teams and volleyball teams.  All the students had an enjoyable day and were competitive against all schools.

NSW Short Couse State Championships
On 7 September Zoe Dowler travelled to Sydney with six other swimmers, including Molly Cargill to compete in the 2018 NSW Short Course Under 10 to 12 State Championships.  She had multiple highlights over the weekend.  Her first highlight was placing second in the 12 and Under 200m breaststroke; her second, was being part of the 12 and Under medley and freestyle relay team – where they achieved second in both events and her third highlight was achieving personal best times in all her events.  To be part of this championships was exciting as the qualifying times for this event were challenging.  They competed against the fastest swimmers across NSW.  Overall Zoe really enjoyed this experience as it gave her the opportunity to compete at interstate level.

Zoe Dowler with her medal.

As mentioned, Molly Cargill also qualified to compete at these championships.  She achieved nine individual medals and two relay medals.  In her individual events she was awarded four gold, four silver and two bronze medals.  Molly had a great experience swimming in the Sydney Olympic Pool and found the competition a lot harder than when competing in Victoria.  No doubt both girls will be looking forward to some rest as they have had a couple of busy weekends racing.

Warragul Junior School

From the Head of Warragul Junior School,
Mr Rowan van Raay.

It has been quite a busy end to the term with the Tournament of Minds State Finals, Years 3 to 6 Junior School Musical, Divisional Athletics, excursions for Year 6 and Year 1, STEM Expos for Prep, Years 1 and 5, Year 4 Multicultural Expo, Bike Ed Competition and we concluded with Footy Colours Day today.

Congratulations to everyone involved in last week’s Years 3 to 6 Junior School Musical, ‘Beans…A Classical Musical’.  Holding it in our gymnasium certainly creates a number of challenges.  However, is always wonderful to see our students happily performing on stage, supporting each other and being actively involved in the musical.  Special thanks to Mrs Davies, Mrs Browne and Mrs Bramstedt for all of their hard work and for ensuring every student in the Junior School had a part to play, be it singing, dancing, acting or assisting back stage.  My thanks to all staff for their support and assistance, Karen and Luisa for overseeing ticketing and to all of the parents who assisted with props and costumes.  Thanks to Mr Chris Staben for recording all of both shows and AV Output for assisting with sound and light.  A huge thanks to our Maintenance team for all of their hard work in setting up the gymnasium.  It was also great to have ex-student, Aimee Armstrong returning to assist on the night.  Winners of the ‘Guess the Beans’ competitions were: Show 1 – 1st Kylie Thorpe, 2nd Ashton Spencer and Show 2 – 1st Hayley Davidson, 2nd Hayley Davidson. There was a total of 3,121 beans in the jar.  Well done to Ruby, Kenisha, Lara, Isabel, Emma and Penny on this initiative, raising $122.50 to put towards our SRC’s Children of Cambodia fundraising efforts!

A huge congratulations to our Language Literature team who received first place in their division at the State Finals of Tournament of Minds recently.  This is an outstanding effort considering we are competing against much bigger schools who enter a large number of teams.  Angela Mirkovic, Ananya Srihari, Krish Gupta, Lucy McKenzie, Zoe Caris, Zoe Lecher and Anoushka Kerhalkar will now represent Victoria and compete in the Australasian Pacific Finals to be held in Darwin in October.  Our thanks to the staff who supported the students in the lead up to the competition and also on the day of the Victorian finals.  Well done to our STEM team who also made it through to the Victorian finals and received Honours.  The Language Literature team are now seeking sponsors to support them in the Australasian Pacific Finals and if you, or any business you know, would like to assist please contact the Junior School office on 5622 6131 for more information.

Congratulations to our Bike Ed team who finished second on Wednesday and now move on to the next round in Term 4.  Well done to the following students who made up the team: Jemilah Michau-Hyde, Matilda Stanfield, Charlotte Beasley, Tyler Christian, Yelan Mateus, Cassie Matthews, Simon Connelly, Ryan Hollier, Taj Irwin (sub) and Amelia Sowerby (sub).

From day one next term, students may wear their summer uniform (blazers are optional unless otherwise instructed due to a special occasion) and should be locating their hats ready for Term 4.   Of course, should the weather be cooler, students may wear their formal (winter) uniform at any time.  Please ensure sport socks are plain white (without logos) and leather school shoes are to be worn with the summer or formal uniform, not black runners (full uniform requirements can be found on page 12 of the student diary).  Students heading into Year 7 no longer require the yellow piping to be added to the pocket of their blazer as this is being phased out.  I also encourage students to check lost property for misplaced items.  Please note that all named items are returned to students when they arrive at the office.

Parents should have received information regarding our Prep to Year 2 swimming program which will take place early next term.  Please see you child’s teacher if this information did not make it home.

I would like to thank Mrs Gretta Denton for filling in for Mr Carter in Year 4C this term while he has been on long service leave.  We also thank Miss Clare Atkinson who has been working with Mrs Adamo and the Preps over the past five weeks while Mrs Jackson was completing her final teaching rounds.  Ms Hall will return next term to take Story Time and I thank Mrs Davies for filling in for Ms Hall whilst she was on family leave.  We wish Mrs Leighton a relaxing and restful break as she takes some well-deserved long service leave next term.  Mrs Bramstedt and Mrs Davies will take Mrs Leighton’s Library and Kitchen Garden classes while she is away.

My sincere thanks to all of the staff and parents who have supported some families through some tough times recently.  Life can throw curve balls at times and I am always proud of the way the St Paul’s Junior School community look after each and assist each other in the time of need.

I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing you on Monday 8 October ready for a huge Term 4.

Head of Warragul Junior School

JAPANESE IRON CHEF 2018

Much study, language preparation, thought and design has gone into the 2018 Japanese Iron Chef this year and Judge Yuri has found the competition to be very rigorous indeed.  Our Year 6 students all converged in the Kitchen classroom to undergo a pressure test to create the best representation of a popular anime character in thirty minutes.  Competitors had to order their ingredients in Japanese and then assemble, clean up and best present their Kiyaraben to Judge Yuri.  It was not easy for Judge Yuri to make her decision and we thank all the competitors for their participation.

The winners of the Individual Japanese Iron Chef section for 2018 are:  Eden Simcocks, Luka Butters and Joey Manani.
Silver place medalists are:  Max O’Connor, Luke Sterling and Charlie Tsuchida.

The winners of the Paired Japanese Iron Chef section for 2018 are:  Mia Nippers and Lucy McKenzie, Benjamin Denton and Cody Coldebella and pair Mia Radford and Charlotte Bundle.
Silver place medalists are:  Lucy Williamson and Ava McKellar, Sandy Norlyng and Jaspar Carson and pair Isabel Oswald and Rhemy Willis.

OCTOBER SPARK PROGRAM

We are very excited to share the SPARK program for the Term 3 holidays.  It is a very active program, with a touch of science, performing arts and even a rock concert thrown in for good measure!

The first day of the program sees us welcoming the ‘Little Devils Circus’ to Warragul.  We are offering two age appropriate sessions for any kids who dream of running off to join the circus!  We are also running a junior and senior science program on the same day…there really is something for everyone.

On Tuesday we are attempting something we have never done before – a performance from Aussie Kids Rock as part of our program.  There are two options with this.  You can come along and enjoy the show for the very reasonable price of $15 (parents and children of all ages welcome!) or you can join in the workshop program and fill up your morning.  It is exciting to offer something for the first time that all ages can enjoy as part of our SPARK Holiday Program.

Thursday and Friday has sport clinics, AUSLAN, Popstar Academy and…SLIME!  The best part about making slime at SPARK?  We have to clean up the mess!  We expect this to be very popular so are offering a morning and afternoon session.  Bookings are open now, https://www.trybooking.com/XXKZ

From the Head of Warragul Secondary School,
Ms Laura Butterworth.

‘Singin in the Rain’ our 2018 musical, may have finished but the experience and memory of such a fantastic show will live on here at St Paul’s for a very long time.  I want to congratulate all of the students and staff who were involved.  It never ceases to amaze me what we can achieve as a school and witnessing the transformation of our gymnasium into a theatre equipped with a café was truly extraordinary.  A very special mention must go to the members of our Friends of St Paul’s (FOSP) who managed to organise the café and create such a wonderfully warm and welcoming atmosphere.  I cannot adequately express our gratitude for your commitment, time and effort to make this possible for our school.  Thank you.

Founding Mothers.

Founding Families Visit
On Tuesday 18 September, we welcomed a group of our founding mothers back to St Paul’s for a visit.  They were very keen to tour our new building and meet our Principal Cameron Herbert.  Cameron and I took them for a tour of the John McIntye Centre and the new building but they were also keen to tour the canteen where many of them had spent countless hours volunteering their time in the early days of St Paul’s.  They were amazed by the size of the canteen now, the online ordering system and the fact that we have a proper coffee machine.  A number of these women now have grandchildren attending St Paul’s so their connection with our school remains very strong.  It was such a privilege to be able to show them our school and a joy to listen to their stories of times gone by, many of which I could relate to having been a student at St Paul’s.  We are looking forward to displaying some alumni memorabilia and historical pieces in the beautiful display areas that the new building provides.

2019 subjects
I would like to advise students, parents and guardians that 2019 subjects will be released to students in Term 4.

Physical Education and Sport Uniform
A reminder from the Health and Physical Education Department that students should never arrive at school in their sport uniform.  Students are to change when they arrive at school and the department is very disappointed that they have to remind students who have been given this specific instruction.  A student would only arrive at St Paul’s in sport uniform if they are involved in SEISA sport on a Thursday.  Students who have a Physical Education class of any description must attend in full formal uniform.  The staff would appreciate parent support regarding this matter.

Earrings and facial hair
Can we please remind parents and guardians that our uniform policy, very clearly states, that girls can only have one piercing in their earlobe and must wear a plain gold or silver stud or sleeper.  Students are not allowed to have any other piercings including noses or in the cartilage of the upper ear.  Students who have these piercings are required to remove them during school hours and for all school events.  It also states that beards and moustaches are not permitted.  All boys should be neat and clean shaven upon entering school each day.

SPORT NEWS

Interschool Gymnastics
On Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 September our students competed in the annual Interschool Gymnastics competition.  After many early morning training sessions the students were excited and determined to do well.  All students who competed did a fantastic job and all improved dramatically over the season.
Some of our best results are below:

•  Our A2 girls finished 3rd (including Emma Wong and Catherine Williams);
•  Our Junior D girls finished 4th (including Olivia Aitken, Remy Ferguson, Hannah Gorman, Mia McCrohan, Gemma Ensor-Walker and Chloe Nicholls);
•  Our boys finished 3rd (Daniel Blyth, Hugh Lyons-Mills, Brett Wu, Gordon Ip, Chetan Narayan, Gerard Wilkinson);
•  Daniel also claimed gold and Hugh the bronze in the individual competition; and
•  Our Senior D girls claimed the team win, whilst filling the top four places in the individual competition too (Tip Incha 1st, Lucy Wakefield 2nd, Mietta Buckingham 3rd).

Thank you to both our amazing captain Catherine Williams and coach Helen Kooloos on all their hard work throughout the term.

House Tug of War
During Term 3 we have had our annual House Tug of War contest with all year levels competing against each other for bragging rights.  Participation was sensational throughout all year levels with students thoroughly enjoying the contest, showing enthusiastic house spirit and participating to the best of their ability, gaining valuable points for their house.

Year level winners:  Year 7 – Paterson, Year 8 – Chisholm, Year 9 – Paterson, Year 10 – Lalor, Year 11 – Monash and Year 12 – Lalor.

Overall results:  1st Chisholm, 2nd Paterson, equal 3rd Lalor and Franklin, 4th Monash and 5th Gilmore.

Well done to all winners, place getters and participants.  I would also like to thank all of the helpers who made this such a great house event.  Also a special mention to Chisholm on beating the immovable force of Lalor (it was only their second loss in twelve years).

SEISA Spring Carnival Success
On Thursday 6 September St Paul’s sent eight teams to the annual SEISA Spring Carnival where we had some fantastic results.  We had four teams crowned champions and our inter boys netball team finished runners up.

Winning teams were:
•  Senior Girls AFL (fourth year in a row)
•  Senior Boys AFL (second year in a row)
•  Junior Boys Volleyball
•  Junior Girls Volleyball

Thank you to all the staff who made the day such a success (including numerous training sessions).  The students thoroughly enjoyed the day, whilst showcasing exceptional behaviour.

Alana and Mr Armour.

On Friday 14 September, we received a visit from the new Bishop of Gippsland, The Right Reverend Dr Richard Treloar.  Bishop Richard was met by our School Captains, Cameron Wong and Isabel Thomas, and our Vice Captains, Jack Ellis and Lauren Clark.  After being given a tour of the Warragul Campus, the Bishop met with Reverend Daniel Lowe, our Senior Chaplain.  We then joined the students and our Deputy Principal, Ms Donna Sweeney, for lunch in the Board Room.  A most enjoyable discussion ensued on a range of matters and the Bishop was most complimentary about our school.  We look forward to having Bishop Richard visit our Traralgon Campus in due course and attend formal occasions at both campuses as they arise.  The first of these formal occasions will be early next year when we officially open our new building, which will house our Year 9 students at Warragul from 2019.  I am sure that St Paul’s will have a very fruitful relationship with Bishop Richard and the Anglican Diocese of Gippsland during his time as our Bishop.

In an increasingly secular society, the place of the Anglican Church in Australia is at a delicate stage in its history.  Most Anglican congregations are diminishing in attendance and, disappointingly for the church, I still lower the average age (slightly) when I walk through the front doors on Sunday.  Sport and Sunday trading now take priority for people on a day that used to be a dedicated day of rest, for church and family.  Nevertheless, the Anglican Church still plays a significant role in our community in many areas of life, not the least of which are welfare and education.

It should come as no surprise that most students in Anglican schools are not church-attending Christians.  At St Paul’s, we welcome people of all faiths as well as people of no faith.  What might come as a surprise, however, is that if parents do state a Christian denomination on the enrolment form, the most common is Roman Catholic and this is indeed the case at St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School.  Despite not identifying as Christians, most of our families would support what we identify as ‘Christian values’ and this is part of the reason for choosing St Paul’s.  The school values of wisdom, compassion, integrity and respect resonate deeply with our students and families.  They are important to us and provide us all with a strong, collective identity.

This is the final week of an especially busy term.  I thank our staff and students for working hard to make the third term a success and I wish everyone in the St Paul’s community a well-deserved, restful and invigorating spring break.
