Welcome to the first Grammarian of 2021.  It is great to have students back in the school again, and to be able to have assemblies resume, albeit in a modified form with the current restrictions in place.  Rather than bringing together our whole school community from Years 3 to 12 for this year’s Welcome Assembly, separate Welcome Assemblies and the inductions of our student leaders were held this week at each campus.  Even though they lacked the magnitude of our traditional Welcome Assembly, the esprit de corps was tangible at each gathering, having been unable to participate in these communal events for such a long time.

At the Warragul Secondary Welcome Assembly, we inducted our highest ATAR achievers (ATARs over 95) into St Paul’s Academic Honours Society.

These students, in alphabetical order, were:
•  Mia Alexander
•  Claire Birks
•  Jesse Buhagiar
•  Tatum Cotterrell (Coursework Dux)
•  Elyse Gordon
•  James Gourley
•  Angus Guo
•  Lachlan Hollier
•  Sage Hyde
•  Connor Ibbotson (Dux)
•  Luke Ibbotson (Dux)
•  Kieran Lewis
•  Jessica Lo
•  Phoebe O’Connor
•  Aarushi Pathania
•  Scarlett Price
•  Isaac Sadek
•  Kristen Skee
•  Sophie Vale
•  Mae Williamson
•  Ruby Zhang

The Duces of 2020, Connor and Luke Ibbotson, gave a moving speech to the assembly, paying tribute to St Paul’s, their teachers from Prep to Year 12 and especially their wonderful mum, Debbie.  A transcript of the boys’ address follows on from this article.

As I have communicated previously, the Class of 2020 achieved the highest results that we have in our records, and probably our best ever in the history of our School.  With a Median ATAR of 87, 23% of students with an ATAR above 95 and 41% of students achieving an ATAR of above 90 (41% in the top 10% of the state) St Paul’s was by far the highest-achieving academic school in Gippsland, and indeed east of the Melbourne greater metropolitan area.  There are approximately 600 secondary schools doing the VCE in Victoria, and St Paul’s was ranked in the coveted top 50 VCE results.  This equates to St Paul’s being in the top 8% of all schools in Victoria and third out of all the regional independent schools.  We thank and acknowledge the outstanding achievements of the Class of 2020 and wish them all the very best for the future.

May the positive start to the school year continue and I wish everyone in the St Paul’s community the very best for 2021.

2020 Dux Speech

Our 2020 Duces Connor Ibbotson and Luke Ibbotson have kindly allowed us to publish their speeches from Wednesday’s Welcome and Leaders Induction in the Grammarian.  This is a tradition that we do each year and a lovely way to share their thoughts and reflection on their time at St Paul’s.

Connor:
“Good morning staff and students, guests and board members, I come here today in what is a very unlikely position; as one of two duxes, the other being my twin brother Luke.

Before continuing further, I’d like to preface this speech by paying acknowledgment to all our peers, as I’m sure everyone understands the unique challenge that COVID-19 has presented and that whilst I may be fortunate enough to be standing up here with my brother, there are many people who have worked extremely hard all year and are just as deserving to be here today.  Also, I’d like to wish the current Year 12s a great year, despite the pandemic, and I also give a warm welcome to our new Year 7 students to whom I promise a brief speech.

Overall, both Luke and I can attribute our presence here today to only a couple of things over the many years that we have been at St Paul’s, primarily including the extremely supportive and open-minded teachers who were willing to put up with all the challenges that Luke and I presented, the least of which being telling us apart.  However, as many will boast, the strongest factor in our success and in the success of our year level in general, is how cohesive we were as a cohort, and both of us can honestly say that without the rest of our year level, we would not be in the position we are today.  Having said this, my biggest regret from my schooling years is having not gotten to know everyone around me, and in this regard, I encourage all of you to make the most of your schooling years and get to know your peers so that you can walk confidently into the next stage of your life with friends and people that you know.

Luke and I both started at St Paul’s in Prep and have been here since, with neither of us regretting the decision that Mum made in terms of our school.  However, I still remember being five years old and complaining to Mum, wishing that I’d gone to the same school as my neighbour, and being the naive child that I was I, didn’t realise the world of opportunities that my Mum had just opened for me through her school selection.  Nowadays, looking back, I realise that in escaping the familiarity in my preschool friends, I was able to better integrate into the new environment that was St Paul’s, an endeavour only made easier by my supportive teachers, many of whom still work here today.  Ultimately this presents a dichotomy, on one hand it’s important to establish friendships, however on the other hand a new environment helps in an individual’s growth as a person, so a balance between the two is essential.  Overall, if there’s anything that I’d like you all to take away from this speech it’s that risk is an essential part of the reward – as cliche as it is, your school years are limited and in the future you don’t want to look back and regret what could have been, so I encourage you all to step outside of your comfort zone because at the end of the day, academic performance is not the most important take away from your schooling years, instead your growth as a person is the true measure of your success.”

Luke:
“I would like to express my gratitude to St Paul’s for the wonderful teaching and co-curricular opportunities they have provided us with over the many years we have spent here.  Connor and I have been involved with an abundance of sports at St Paul’s and I truly encourage everyone here to adopt a sport or some other recreational interest.  Especially come exam periods, physical health is of utmost importance amongst study and stress, and it really can help throughout the year to have that bit of relief from your busy school lives.

Furthermore, my appreciation for the Music Department is unparalleled – we both learnt piano and stringed instruments at St Paul’s and it was through our musical lessons which we acquired much of our dedication, perseverance and discipline which helped us strive towards our personal and academic achievements.

However, the most important piece of advice I can give to all students gathered here today is to trust those around you – your peers, teachers and parents.  Each year level has their own individual challenges and triumphs in the coming year, and at St Paul’s I know that your teachers and friends will stand beside you and help you in every way they possibly can.  In saying that, I’d like to thank my teachers, who all turned what seemed to be a bleak year into an enjoyable one, and to all other staff at St Paul’s, who contribute to the family-like nature of our school.  My Mum is the person who I thank the most for my achievements today though.  Throughout Year 12 and previous years she constantly motivated my brother and I and provided us with the best possible tools for the challenges of VCE.  The achievements I have made throughout the years are all dedicated and a product of her hard work and optimism, and I am sincerely grateful to have such a wonderful Mum.

For the current Year 12 students – within this year it is important to push yourselves, to have a passion for the goals you want to achieve.  However, it is also important to occasionally take a step back, have a break and relax, because whilst this might be a challenging year, it is also one of the most enjoyable.  Don’t be disappointed if you don’t meet your expectations on SACs or tests – the most important part of learning is gaining the resolve and determination to achieve better next time, and I believe that all of you have the willpower to triumph over all aspects of this coming year.  There will be times when you feel discouraged but I urge you to push forwards, with our school motto in mind, ‘ever onwards’.  But at the end of the day – and I’m sure you’ll hear this a lot – VCE is not the end of your educational career and there will always be a pathway which leads you where you want to go.  Whatever pathway you end up walking, I wish you well within those future endeavours.

And finally, again to the Class of 2020, I am amazed at how many people are sitting here today, and I am also truly grateful for the experiences undertaken and friendships made throughout not only this year but all years before too.  I know that your futures hold success, and as both Connor and Jesse have now mentioned, we are the golden year level.  Good luck with everything the future holds.

Thank you.”

From the Head of Traralgon Junior School,
Ms Tracey King.

Welcome to the 2021 School Year
The first few days of term have been smooth and very settled across our Junior School.  It has been lovely to see everyone back in class learning and out in the garden playing together.  Students were excited to be starting the school year and there were smiles all round and a lovely atmosphere in each classroom.  We have already enjoyed a number of activities; Swim Testing for Years 3 to 6, photos for new students and a Whole School Assembly to induct our new School Leaders for 2020 and crossing of the Prep hats, specialist classes have started and some of our co-curricular activities began this week too.  Students have been involved in learning to learn activities with their teachers and classmates and have spent time setting up classroom processes and expectations.  It has certainly been a productive and enjoyable start to the 2021 school year.

Our Friends of St Paul’s provided a morning coffee and chat opportunity for parents on the first day and it was lovely to see many parents connecting and catching up.

Special congratulations to our Prep students who have settled well into their new school routines and have impressed their teachers with their eagerness to learn and participate.  Early Learning Centre groups also started this week and the children were excited and keen to enjoy activities and play opportunities.

Congratulations to Year 6 students, Chloe Ellen and Harrison Thomsen, who were presented with their School Leader badges at our Welcome Assembly Service.  Both of these students represented the Traralgon Junior School well and are looking forward to fulfilling their roles as School Leaders in 2021.  The Junior School are very proud of Chloe and Harrison.

On Tuesday students enjoyed a special incursion from ‘Mad about Science’ and were treated to some exciting science demonstrations.  The show covered a number of topics and students particularly were fascinated by static electricity, air and fire.

Many thanks to all of our teachers who have been organised and well prepared ensuring a calm and smooth first week of school and that everyone has been successful in their learning.  Many thanks also to our parents who have worked with their children to ensure they are organised and prepared for learning each day.

Teacher Professional Learning
Teachers were back at school last week and participated in two very important Professional Learning Days.  Our first day was about Explicit Direct Instruction and we were treated to a highly sought after international presenter; Joe Ybarra.  Joe kept teachers thinking and busy all day with a mix of theory and practical workshops.  Teachers will be implementing some explicit instruction techniques in their classrooms and using strategies to ensure all children are engaged, participating and learning to the best of their ability.  Students may come home and talk about TAPPLE  (techniques for checking for understanding) and engagement norms (strategies for engaging all students) and teachers are looking forward to sharing these with parents at our Family Fun and Information Evening.  Explicit Instruction takes into account cognitive load theory when designing learning lessons and is based on the science of learning.

Teachers spent Friday with Wilson and Julie McCaskill from ‘Play Is The Way’ and were inspired and motivated by Wilson’s high energy and insightful presentation about building resilience and empathy in our children in order for them to thrive in our society.  PLAY IS THE WAY® is a practical methodology for teaching social and emotional skills using guided play, classroom activities and an empowering language.  It is a process that gives schools a way to develop, improve and entrench the personal and social capabilities of students.  The first phase of Play Is The Way involves challenging games which provoke students to think collaboratively, work together cooperatively and regulate their emotions through challenges.  Through these games children develop a range of skills and resilience.  Teachers have already started implementing and trialing Play Is The Way this week and our mornings have been full of laughter and excitement as students learn these new games.

Alongside the games teachers will be introducing students to the five ‘life rafts’:
•  Treat Others as You Would Like To Be Treated
•  Be Brave to Participate and Progress
•  It Takes Great Strength to be Sensible
•  Have Reasons for the Things You Say and Do
•  Pursue your Personal Best No Matter Who You Work With.

COVID-19 Guidelines
Whilst we have all been enjoying the relaxing of COVID-19 restrictions I would like to remind parents that social distancing is in place in our building and grounds.  There are limits for the number of people who are able to access buildings at any one time.  Please do wear a mask if you are unable to socially distance adequately and do not enter school buildings unless you have an appointment or are attending a special function.  Parents are asked to register at the Junior School office when attending onsite.  Parents are asked to keep unwell children at home and if anyone in the family is showing symptoms of illness please see your GP.  Current DHHS guidelines recommend that anyone who shows any signs of fever, cough, sore throat should be tested for COVID-19 even if symptoms are mild.  Our best way of managing COVID-19 at this time is to ensure that unwell students, parents and staff do not attend at school.  Please be aware that any children who do attend unwell will have their parents contacted to collect them from school, camps or excursions.  I thank all of our families in advance for their cooperation and understanding.

Upcoming Events
Week 3:

No official school events however we will be acknowledging Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 9 February and International Day of Women in Science on Thursday 11 February.

Week 4:
Years 5 and 6 students head out on their respective camps to Sovereign Hill and Melbourne.
Swimming begins for Years 3 and 4 and is scheduled for Monday to Thursday.
Shrove Tuesday will again involve students participating in pancake races.
Our ELC families are invited to attend the annual Welcome Picnic.

This week is promising to be busy and full of adventure for students.

Week 5:
Swimming continues for Years 3 and 4 and is scheduled for Monday to Thursday.
Family Fun and Information Evening will be held on Friday 26 February for all families.  This event will be held outside.

School Communications
Effective communication between school and home is very important and information is shared with parents via:
•  MyStPauls website: Junior School News and individual class pages
•  Emails to parents
•  Notices which are hard copy and sent home
•  Student diaries

Parents are encouraged to regularly check their child’s class page on MyStPauls for information and details about learning and special events.
St Paul’s regularly seeks feedback from parents to help inform improvements about communication processes.  In addition, I encourage you to make a time to see me if you would like to discuss any concerns or feedback you may have.

Many thanks also to our parents who have worked with their children to ensure they are organised and prepared for learning each day.  As the term rolls out please be mindful of ensuring your child has plenty of healthy snacks and lunch foods as a well as a drink bottle each day.  Especially during the warmer days, hats and sunscreen are essential.

I am looking forward to working with all families and students and sharing in learning experiences throughout the year.  I encourage you to be involved in your child’s education and attend special events and activities as often as possible and know what is happening in the Junior School.  I also encourage you to build your community network and supports by joining in with our ‘Friends of St Paul’s’ activities, coming along to special family events and being an active and positive member of our school community.

We have started the year with energy and positivity; our staff team are really looking forward to working with students and their families and enjoying a fabulous 2021.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Leo Bascaglia

MYSTPAULS APP DISCONTINUED

As announced last year, the MyStPauls app has now been phased out.  Many parents expressed frustration with the app and as it was provided by an outside company using a template, the School had no way to make any of the improvements suggested by parents .

The best way to access MyStPauls via mobile is directly via https://my.stpaulsags.vic.edu.au/ using a phone browser.  This version of MyStPauls has all the features that were in the app in a slightly different format.

However, using a laptop, computer or tablet will provide the best viewing experience of MyStPauls, if you have access to them.

The School’s IT department is available to help any parents access MyStPauls via mobile browser.  Contact them on 5622 6148.

From the Head of Traralgon Secondary School,
Mr Brad McCabe.

Welcome
The 2021 academic year has commenced strongly for our secondary students.  I had the opportunity to visit several classes this week where I have left encouraged and proud of our students at St Paul’s.

On Thursday 4 February we held our Traralgon Leadership Inductions Assembly where our School Captains, Peer Support Leaders and Deputy House Captains were inducted into their new leadership positions.  I was very proud of our student leaders, who accepted their badges and positions with honour.  The students were superbly behaved during the assembly and demonstrated that they understand a sense of occasion.  The School calls for personal qualities of honesty, fair-mindedness, integrity and the ability to exercise leadership within the school community.  The following leaders were inducted into their new positions.

School Captains:  Zoe Dowler and Lachlan Speairs.
Peer Support Leaders:  Jarrod Guy, Sophie Bray, Lachlan Speairs, Nikita Buhagiar, Riley Ellen, Verity Jeffrey, Annie Burrows, Cade Hughes, Zoe Dowler and Ruby Tosch.
Deputy House Captains:  Nikita Buhagiar – Franklin, Alannah Rogalsky – Paterson, Amber Schutte – Lalor, Sarah Farley – Gilmore, Joshua Verhagen – Monash and Ava Carruthers – Chisholm.

Following the Traralgon Leadership Inductions Assembly, on Thursday 4 Feburary, we held a special event, The Turning of the Sod.  The Turning of the Sod was a momentous occasion, sparking the Traralgon Campus’s official commencement to grow to VCE by 2026, of which our current Year 6 students will be our first cohort.  We were blessed to have many special guests for this event, including The Right Reverent Dr Richard Treloar and Mr Richard Prideaux, the second Principal of St Paul’s many years ago.  A sincere thank you to all staff and students for your help before these events or throughout the morning; our school’s community spirit is special.

Traralgon and Warragul Secondary Schools Combined House Swimming Carnival
The Secondary School Swimming Carnival is being held on Wednesday 10 February and all students are expected to attend.  Students are to be at school by 8:50 am and are to go to their house areas, wearing the correct sport uniform.  Students will travel by bus; departing from school between 9:05 am and 9:20 am and will be taken by bus to the Moe Outdoor Pool.  Students are to wear full house sport uniform, this consists of the official school sports shorts, house top, school hat and sports shoes (no thongs).  If the weather is cold students may wear the school track pants and school spray jacket.  Students wishing to wear costumes in house colours must change into these clothes at the pool.

While every attempt to provide shady areas is made, it is essential that students keep their hats and tops on whilst waiting to compete or spectating.  All girls are required to wear a one-piece swimsuit, bikini style is not permitted and girls will be asked to wear a polo top if this is the case, even when competing.  Sunscreen must be worn and regularly reapplied during the day.  Sunscreen will be provided by the school; however, students are asked to bring their own sunscreen as well.  Students are advised to make sure that they have plenty to drink during the day and a water bottle is advised.  While there will be a kiosk available, we recommend that students provide their own lunch.

Students will be returned to school by bus in time for a normal departure at 3:10 pm.  Students who wish to travel directly to the pool in the morning, must bring a note to their Mentor Teacher prior to the day.  Any student wishing to leave from the pool must bring a note from home to show their House Teacher on the morning and again when leaving the pool.

Traralgon Canteen – Student Volunteers
The Traralgon canteen is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist in the canteen at rRecess and lunchtimes on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The assistance will involve learning and using money handling and food handling skills, developing communication and customer service skills.

Other duties include serving, cleaning and assisting the Food Services Manager where necessary.

Whilst this will be of valuable service to the school, the new skills learned will assist prepare students for employment in the future.

Volunteers will be entitled to a free lunch on their day of work.

For expressions of interest please email Maddison Scott at mscott@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au as soon as possible.

TEAM TIMOR NEWS

We were all very excited to be able to end our year last year with our annual Run for East Timor.  This is one of our social highlights and a much-needed fundraiser for our Team Timor projects.  The enthusiasm shown by students was contagious, with fabulous costumes compiled for the event and many kilometres run or even cartwheeled.  It was wonderful to have the 2020 Year 6 group join us for the occasion and experience this valued house event.

Team Timor is excited to announce that our new Captain for 2021 is Ava Carruthers.  Ava has been a committed member of Team Timor since joining in Year 7 and has some wonderful ideas to raise awareness and funds for our projects.  She would be keen to talk to any Year 7 students who may be interesting in joining.  Stay tuned for more Timor events in 2021!

EARLY SPRING CLEANING?

I think spring cleaning has started early this year.  Maybe it is just my little part of the world but I keep hearing about people cleaning out cupboards and rooms and getting rid of all sorts of old or unused bits and pieces.  I am sure there are more hard rubbish piles on the nature strips than is usual for this time of year.  Perhaps it is part of our reaction to a difficult year.  While COVID-19 has not gone away, there is at least a sense that we might have it under control and that life can gradually start to move back to something like it was.  And in our desire to purge ourselves of the struggles of 2020 we are clearing out the trash on all fronts.  It may not be entirely logical but I suspect it is a very healthy reaction.  Because in clearing out some of the detritus of life, we are making room for something new.  Something exciting.  Something we can anticipate.  It is a sign of hope.

A colleague recently said to me, “You’ve got to have something to look forward to.  It’s what keeps you going.”  I couldn’t agree more.  Part of the challenge of 2020 was that so many things we might have looked forward to were taken away.  This was true for so many, including our young people.  It was so easy for them to lose hope.  To lose that expectation and anticipation of what joy the future might hold.  This is why it is such a joy to see students returning to school, gathering in classrooms, playing and talking together.  This is why the avalanche of emails to parents outlining plans for upcoming camps and events is actually exciting.  This is why the rapidly filling calendar, while daunting, is cause for celebration.  Because we have things to look forward to.  We have hope!

As we settle into a new year of school life I would encourage you to make a conscious effort to recognise and talk about the things you are looking forward to.  Help our young people to see the possibilities that lay ahead, rather than focusing on the things that are currently restricted.  Help them to find new hope.  We have been reminded by the pandemic that many of the things we might have pinned our hopes on are fleeting and fragile.  Many of us may have been prompted to rethink our priorities and where it is that we find our hope.  I have great hopes for 2021.  I hope for vaccines that are effective and widely distributed, I hope for continued success in suppressing COVID-19 in Australia, I hope for no more lockdowns, I hope for a return of school camps and events but most of all, my hope rests in a loving God who promises joy and peace regardless of circumstance.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)

Warragul Junior School

From the Head of Warragul Junior School,
Mr Rowan van Raay.

Welcome to 2021
As we complete our first full week, I am happy to report that the start of the school year has been fantastic.  How nice it is to have our families back on campus during drop off and pick up times. We certainly have had ‘friendly start of school’ weather that is for sure with students enjoying using the new soccer goals and Years 1 and 2 sandpit and exploring in the newly created area below the Kitchen Garden.  What a treat to have all three Prep classes visit my office to say “Hi” during their tour of the Junior School.  We had a wonderful end to the first day on Monday when we celebrated the Preps first day of school and inducted our two Junior School Captains, Eli and Isabel.

I hope that you all take the time to read the newsletter each fortnight and visit MyStPauls to see what your child/ren has been up to in their year level and specialists classes.  MyStPauls also contains lots of information about school events and helps to keep you up-to-date with everything that happens in the Junior School and can be great way to start a conversation with your child about their day at school.  For families who may have misplaced their login details, I ask that you contact IT Support at the school (5622 6148) and they will issue you with a new one.  Hopefully new families have received login details by now, if not, please let us know.

Parent Information Evenings
Families should have received an email regarding our upcoming Parent Information Evenings.  For families who are unable to make it, all Year Level Information Booklets will be uploaded on Year Level pages on MyStPauls.  A reminder that you need to register using the links below (the sessions in the gymnasium each night will be identical, so you only need to attend one of these).

Orientation Sessions – ‘Setting Up the Year’, building a cohesive classroom
During the first week of school, students participated in a variety of orientation sessions with their classroom teacher.  The aim of the program is for all students to hear the same message and to focus upon different aspects of school life at St Paul’s.  These sessions included the following:
•  School Values (Wisdom, Integrity, Compassion and Respect) – explanation of our School values and how they underpin all that we do at St Paul’s.  Everyone has the right to feel safe, happy and respected at St Paul’s.
•  Social Skills, Courtesy, Class Agreements – appropriate ways of joining in, including others, holding doors open, saying “hello”, “thank you” and more, discuss bullying – tell a teacher, out of bounds areas.  Develop some class agreements/norms together to put up around the classroom.
•  Diary – summary of the Junior School Diary (including Code of Conduct, homework, filling in notes, reminders, events).
•  Uniform – outline expectations with regard to uniform, hair, jewellery, blazers, correct socks, Years 3 to 6 not to wear blue jumper as outer garment to and from school.
•  Sustainability – discuss compost, different bins, paper recycling, do not waste water.
•  Cyber Safety – orientation into the appropriate use of computers/iPads.  Mobile phones are NOT to be used at school.
•  Team Building – getting to know you activities.

It has also been wonderful to see our Pre-Prep and Pre-Kinder students continuing their transition sessions as they work towards attending full sessions in the coming weeks.

Welcome to 2021 Family Barbeque
An invitation is attached to this newsletter inviting all families (ELC and Junior School) to join us for an informal gathering on Friday 26 February from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.  Our ‘Prep Grand Prix’ and ‘100 metre Gift’ will be held and the Year 12 Prefects and Year 9 Community Ambassadors will be running some activities for the children.  Families are welcome to bring their own picnic or we will be cooking a sausage sizzle and our Junior School SRC will be selling cold drinks.  It is also a great opportunity to meet staff or play some friendly games with your children on the multi-purpose courts or oval.  Families are welcome to come and go as they please.  We also see this as a wonderful opportunity for families to visit us in a relaxed and informal setting, catch up with each other and for new families to make some new connections.

Assembly and Chapel Times
A reminder that our Assembly and Chapel times this year are:
Years 3 to 6: Chapel and Assembly, Mondays 2:20 pm, Junior School Gymnasium
Prep to Year 2: Chapel, Friday Week A, 2:40 pm, Prideaux Centre
Prep to Year 2: Assembly, Friday Week B, 2:40 pm, Junior School Gymnasium

Parents are most welcome to join us during these times and will be required to sign in where the assembly is taking place.  A reminder that taking photos or videoing students is not permitted at assemblies due to privacy reasons.  Face masks are recommended for use when physical distancing of 1.5 metres cannot be maintained.

After School Care
To attend Before or After School Care, parents/guardians must register their child with Camp Australia by completing an online enrolment form via their parent portal.  It is very important that parents/guardians fill out all compulsory enrolment documentation for their child and notify Camp Australia of any medical conditions.
Families can register for free at https://pp.campaustralia.com.au/account/register-contacts

Carpark  (a map and explanation can be found later in this newsletter)
Just a reminder that everyone should use the pathways and cross the road at the zebra crossings when entering or leaving the ELC or Junior School to ensure we all stay safe.  Could I also please remind parents to be extra careful when reversing out of carparks.  Could I please ask that parents do not double park in Maple Way or Cedar Place (particularly the end of the court near the entry to the school) so our neighbours have easy access to their driveways.

I hope to see many families at our upcoming Information evenings and Welcome Barbeque.

Warragul Secondary School

From the acting Head of Warragul Secondary School,
Mrs Leonie Clark.

As sleepy adolescents awoke on the first day of the school year there was a gradual awareness that the lovely long holidays were over and that they would need to prepare for their 2021 school photo.  Rapidly growing feet were pushed into socks and sturdy shoes for the first time in months.  A stark contrast from the warm sands of the Bass Coast or the comfort of the couch at home.  Freshly ironed shirts and dresses were tucked into blazers and subsequently into buses or cars.  “Sit here, pop your feet on the green markers, turn to look at the camera and smile!” chirped the voice behind the lens as the clickety clack, whirr and blinding light of the flash signified the beginning of a brand-new school year.

This week we warmly greeted many new families to our school community as well as many new excited Year 7 students.  We have delighted in the shiny new school shoes, the excited flurry as the lush school grounds were explored and the elation when the students found their way to the Canteen or the Library during their breaks.  There have been many new friendships formed in the last week and I am especially proud of the way that all of our students and their families welcomed new faces to our exceptional secondary learning community.

When asked how their very first day as a new Year 7 was going, students responded with a nine out of ten and some even responded with a ten out of ten.  That is very high praise indeed and we look forward to maintaining that level of enjoyment and connection to our community as this very new cohort travels the next six years together and forms joyful and life-long memories.

At the other end of the secondary journey we welcomed back our Year 12 students who were very pleased to be able to finally move into their lockers and their very own Common Room.  They quickly embraced the fabulous new furniture in the space and although the reality of being in their final year is gradually resonating, we know that they will look after each other, believe in themselves and work together to achieve a future path for themselves far beyond the safety of the St Paul’s nest.  We are certainly cheering very loudly for them and know that they will take up every opportunity this year to work towards their future goals and find opportunities each day to lift each other up with kindness and compassion.

At Wednesday’s Assembly we officially welcomed the Year 7 cohort and inducted all of our 2021 Student Leaders.  Our Academic Honours students proudly collected their awards and our Duces, Connor and Luke Ibbotson shared their experience and advice for academic and more importantly personal success.

We continue to be COVID-19 alert and encourage our families to keep our community safe by keeping their children at home when they are not well.  We are very pleased to once again offer our students the opportunity to participate in many of our planned Term 1 school events.  While it is very exciting to have many of our regular activities recommence for Term 1, it is important to note that the Department of Education and Training and the Victorian Chief Health Officer recommends that schools stay within stipulated density quotas for school events.

Some events are easily managed by our staff and for those particular events you will be sent a formal invitation with an RSVP as well as the specific protocols that will need to be followed by you and any guests.  However, to maintain the safety of our students and staff within the St Paul’s community parents and guardians will be unable to attend the following planned events in Term 1.

It is our hope that as the year progresses, these protocols will gradually relax and we will once again be able to openly welcome our parents to see their children enjoying and participating in the co-curricular program at St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School.

For the time being parents and guardians will be UNABLE to attend the following events:
Wednesday 10 February, House Swimming Carnival
Thursday 11 February, SEISA Summer Sport, Intermediate and Senior, Round 1
Thursday 18 February, SEISA Summer Sport, Intermediate and Senior, Round 2
Thursday 25 February, SEISA Swimming Badminton and Table Tennis Carnival
Thursday 4 March, SEISA Summer Sport, Intermediate and Senior, Round 3
Thursday 11 March, SEISA Summer Sport, Intermediate and Senior, Round 4
Thursday 18 March, SEISA Summer Sport, Intermediate and Senior, Round 5
Thursday 25 March, SEISA Summer Sport, Intermediate and Senior, Round 6
Tuesday 30 March, House Athletics Carnival
Thursday 1 April, Easter Service and SEISA Junior Trials

We appreciate your kind understanding at this time and your continued support in keeping our community safe.

It is with much excitement that we anticipate the combined Traralgon and Warragul Secondary Schools House Swimming Carnival and we hope that our students will embrace this long awaited opportunity to be together once again!  Please remember to add to your diaries the Welcome and Information Evening on Tuesday 16 February at 7:00 pm in our Science Centre at the Warragul Secondary School.  This much anticipated evening is fast approaching for our Years 7 to 12 families and it is a wonderful opportunity to meet and greet the staff.  On Wednesday 17 February our Year 7 students and their Year 11 Peer Support Leaders will depart for Camp Rumbug, near Foster in South Gippsland.  Our Head of Year 7 Mr Matthew Shearing and the Year 7 staff have prepared three days of fabulous fun, adventure as well as invaluable opportunities for our Year 7 students to make new friendships.

Please take note of the ‘What’s On’ below so that you are aware of future key events.  I have also included below some key information from our official school photographers Arthur Reed.

VCE SEASON OF EXCELLENCE – TOP DESIGNS 2021 HERE WE COME!

Congratulations to St Paul’s 2020 graduate, Ondine Olsson who has had her Year 12 Product Design and Technology Textiles folio and production work selected for inclusion in the very prestigious 2021 Top Designs Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum.

Top Designs is part of a larger annual exhibition, the VCE Season of Excellence, which showcases the top work from VCE students from across all of Victoria.

Ondine’s folio ‘Contemporary Rodeo Wear’ was selected from some 130 applications across the state and will be one of only sixteen Product Design and Technology exhibits chosen from an outstanding shortlisted field of forty-seven VCE Top Designs.

Despite the numerous setbacks of a challenging year for all VCE students, Ondine demonstrated perseverance and determination to design and create a garment for her end-user, Pace Dawson (who is also modelled in these images), that reflected the design aesthetic of her end-user, challenged design norms, provided protection and comfort in a durable and sustainable product.

St Paul’s 2020 Year 12 student Henry Dann took the photos of Ondine’s work.  Well done Ondine!
