This week saw a group of Year 11 students attend the first of Federation University Experience Days, this one being in the area of Exercise Science and Sport and Recreation/Education areas of study.
An interesting day was enjoyed and students were given a clearer insight of what theses type of courses involve and the various career pathways they can lead to.  A further two days are on offer for next term in a variety of study areas for Year 11 students.

A reminder that iCan Med will be running a UCAT workshop for Years 10 to 12 students here at St Paul’s Warragul Campus, 26 March, 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  Students will be shown what to look for in the UCAT and how to approach each section of the test.  Any Year 12 student who is thinking of applying to study Medicine or Dentistry will need to sit this test to meet one of the prerequisites of application.  However, it is a great chance for students in Years 10 and 11 to get a head start on what to expect once they are in Year 12!

There are a number of school holiday opportunities to visit various institutions to get a ‘taste’ of what tertiary life is like and what courses are offered.  These are listed in this newsletter and students are also encouraged to check the website of any other institutes they may be interested in, as some will offer holiday workshops also.

And finally, ASIC – Traralgon office have some job vacancies in their Call Centre, full-time and part-time (twenty-five hour) roles available for twelve months.  To find our more information and to apply, candidates can go to, Careers at ASIC.

SCIENCE NEWS

Data Science:  IT + Science
Do you love working with computers, science and solving problems?  Have you considered studying data science?  In our day and age we are using and storing massive amounts of data and this will only increase in the future.  Data science fundamentally deals with how we will store and analyse data in the future.

The following has been taken from the Swinburne University website:  “Data science is an opportunity to explore new kinds of data and new tools for processing it. You’ll learn how to manipulate and process data in order to extract information and establish truths.  Data science spans the use and processing of data across diverse fields, including modelling for supercomputing or astrophysics. Or you could work with metadata, a field that will require data to be processed in ways we’ve never even considered.”

Data Science is an exciting study area and there will be many jobs available in the future.  You may consider studying data science at the following Victorian universities:
•  Bachelor of Computer Science (Data Science), Swinburne University, http://bit.ly/1Wmeaa1
•  Bachelor of Computer Science (Big Data), RMIT, http://bit.ly/1QC3X56
