Term 1 has certainly flown by and the students have been fantastic at making me feel welcome whilst having conversations about their future pathways.  Meetings can be arranged by students or parents.  To arrange a time, all you need to do is send me an email sluck@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au, drop in to my office or phone me.

To keep up to date with upcoming career events, scholarships, information sessions, key dates and much more please ensure you read these fortnightly Careers newsletters.

For those students who have applied to do work experience during the Easter holidays, please ensure that you have actioned any instructions from Mrs Sinnett so that your placement can begin.  You can undertake work experience once you turn fifteen years old and can complete it in Years 10, 11 and/or 12.  Seeing me early in the year is important to ensure you can get organised early and to be able to start making links with local employers.  If you are interested in taking up the opportunity to undertake work experience, please contact the Careers office to begin the process.

If you are feeling overwhelmed about the year ahead we have an abundance of resources and ideas to help with planning and setting goals, a few are listed below.   A fantastic tip from American swimmer, Olympian and world champion Katie Ledecky is: “Set goals that, when you set them, you think they’re impossible. But then every day you can work towards them, and anything is possible…”

Year 12 – University Pathway Planner

If you are planning to apply for university courses this year, there are many dates, programs and initiatives you will need to be aware of.  These dates and initiatives will vary between states.  Having a diary or a planning app on your phone or device will help you feel organised and ensure you do not miss any key dates. If you are wondering what you could be doing during Term 1 to get prepared for the application period, please read our suggestions below:

Have a career appointment
If you have not already done so, book an appointment with Mrs Luck to explore any course/career/occupation goals you may have.  She will be able to give you advice specific to the state you would like to study in, the best courses to suit your goals and also suggest other options you may not have considered yet.

Participate in career events
It is never too early to attend career events.  You will be able to explore course options, ask questions and speak with course advisers.  Some events will be held online which will help if you can not travel.

Work Experience

You can arrange to do work experience during any of the school holidays. You may have a family friend or know of someone who works in an industry you would like to try, contact them to enquire whether they would be willing to have you.  If you need help finding a suitable employer please speak to Mrs Luck.

Speak to past students
Ask Mrs Luck or Mrs Cumming if they can link you with a past student who is studying or working in the area you are passionate about.  You and your parent/guardian may be able to Zoom online with them and ask them questions.

Book a consultation
Several universities offer a one-to-one chat service online via Zoom.  Go to their website to book in for an appointment.

Research university courses
Use the following methods to research courses:

  • University sites
Use the course search function on university websites (for example nursing) or browse study areas (for example allied health).
  • Tertiary Admission Centres (TACs)
Use the course search function on the state-based TACs you are interested in.  Below are the websites:
    Victoria,  www.vtac.edu.au
    NSW/ACT,  www.uac.edu.au
    SA/NT,  www.satac.edu.au
    QLD,  www.qtac.edu.au
    Tasmania,  www.utas.edu.au
    WA,  www.tisc.edu.au
  • The Good Universities Guide

Deakin University – Changes to Folio Requirements for Creative Arts and Design Courses

Deakin’s creative arts and design courses have recently undergone an important update to folio entry requirements.
A folio is now an optional entry requirement.  Course selection will still be based on an ATAR.  Should an applicant choose to submit a folio (deemed successful), that folio is considered along with the ATAR.

  • Deakin recognises creative potential, by allowing applicants to submit a portfolio of their best creative work with their application to showcase their talent and boost their chance of admission into our creative arts and design degrees (excluding drama).
  • A folio is an optional entry requirement.
  • Submitting a folio will boost an applicant’s chance of admission to Deakin by strengthening their application if they are concerned about meeting the ATAR requirements.
  • For school leavers, the assessment will still be based on their ATAR, but a folio will be considered alongside their ATAR.

Applicants who wish to enhance their application are encouraged to complete the Deakin University folio requirements by the stated deadline.

Learn more about the folio requirements
here.
