Spring has sprung and with it a new energy is in the air! Students are reminded to keep an eye out for career holiday opportunities, part-time jobs and assistance with future planning! Some of these are listed in this week’s newsletter but more will be on offer over the coming weeks.

Years 11 and 12 students will find some useful information to help plan and organise for 2022 and beyond – it is worth taking the time to read!

Years 9 and 10 students, in particular, can begin to think again about Work Experience opportunities once these programs recommence in 2022 and employers welcome students back into the workplace. Now is the time to make those contacts and plan ahead.

Who wants to be an engineer?

Do you prefer building bridges or creating engines?
Who has more fun – a civil engineer or an aerospace engineer? Bring together skills and knowledge with a degree at RMIT. Play this game to find out what type of engineering you would be best suited to and about student life at RMIT, https://bit.ly/2MVJrDK

Interested in Engineering?
The following information has been written by Nathan Chanesman at ‘My Career Match’:
“Engineering is one of most exciting and in-demand careers for young people to choose. Engineering is an occupation with an extremely wide reach. The term ‘engineering’ covers many fields and, by extension, many skills. Engineers are scientists, inventors, designers, builders and great thinkers. They improve the state of the world, amplify human capability and make people’s lives safer and easier.
As technology continues to develop, the need for engineers, and the reward of being an engineer, increases too. Some of the most popular reasons to become an engineer include:

•  Personal Happiness
This is a career that will keep you happy by providing great financial security, diversity, flexibility, prestige, intellectual development, challenges and personal satisfaction. The variety of ideas and finished projects keep the engineer’s job interesting.

•  Work with Smart People and Travel
People who enjoy working with other people and travelling may become field service engineers. Creative people who constantly have new ideas about everything may enjoy working as design engineers. People who enjoy conducting experiments in laboratories.

•  Become an Entrepreneur
Engineering also lends itself nicely to entrepreneurial types. In fact, more engineers are CEOs of companies than any other undergraduate degree. Usually this is because they invent something and then form a company to market and sell it. Other engineers may form construction, environmental, or consulting firms because their knowledge is in high demand.

•  Manage Companies
Many engineers obtain higher degrees in business to become better managers and to receive a broader understanding of the inner workings of engineering companies. Many graduates work for financial companies; they may write software programs or construct financial models.

•  Learn to Think
One of the best reasons to choose engineering is because an engineering education teaches you how to think through a problem in order to solve it. Engineering teaches all these mental agility skills that will help you solve problems for the rest of your life. You access several different approaches to solve a problem, and then it is up to you to show everyone how your solution meets the needs of the design.

•  Make a Difference
Engineering is one of the most humanistic fields. Engineering is about making life and the world a better place. The more you expose yourself to the world of engineering, the more opportunities you may have and the better prepared you will be to meet the challenges ahead.

An important tip for school leavers for getting a job is to create yourself a Linkedin profile. Linkedin is like a professional Facebook account where you can blog, comment on professional discussions and build a professional portfolio that aligns with your resume. This needs to be developed over a period of years before graduating from university, so start soon and continue to work on it during university.
www.linkedin.com

Top Tips shared by the head of Linkedin, Cliff Rosenberg

PICK A PROFESSIONAL SHOT
Including a profile picture in your profile is a must. Putting a face to your name makes it twenty-one times more likely to be viewed but first impressions last, so make sure your profile picture is professional.

INCLUDE A SUMMARY
Clearly outline your professional story; what your aspirations are and what qualifications you have to offer that others do not. This is your opportunity to demonstrate how your unique qualities make you perfect for your dream role. This is your elevator pitch.

BUZZWORDS ARE BUZZKILL
Are you motivated, creative, passionate? Great. So is everyone else on Linkedin. Do yourself a favour — delete every single one of these buzzwords from your profile and replace them with keywords.

HIGHLIGHT YOUR EXPERIENCE
Illustrate your unique professional story and achievements by adding pictures, compelling videos and innovative presentations to your experience section. If you are just graduating, include your school history.

SHOWCASE YOUR SKILLS
Maintaining a relevant list of at least five skills on your profile will help others understand your strengths and match you with the right opportunities. Also add other certifications that highlight important skills.

STAY ACTIVE
Share content that excites you, such as a gripping video, a well-written news story or a particularly impressive presentation through status updates.
