This week’s newsletter again contains some very pertinent information for Year 12 students. However, there is much more to read about for all the other year levels! Lots of opportunities are emerging to help students with their research and exploring of what is available once they have completed their secondary education – so many choices!

A reminder that Work Experience over the summer break for students cannot be processed through the school program in line with Government legislation. This includes the week after St Paul’s students commence holidays, when other schools are still running.

Students who are lucky enough to secure a Work Experience placement this term (within COVIDsafe guidelines) will be supported to undertake this during the remainder of the term if the family is happy with that. Please ensure any green application forms are lodged with the Careers office at least two weeks prior to the dates required.

Year 12 students this week have been ‘walked through’ the Change of Preference procedure and timelines once results are released and also have hard copies of these dates to refer to.
Parents and guardians will receive this information also later in the term.

Encouraging Students to Consider a Career in Technology
The following has been taken from My Career Match:
“MyCareerMatch has collaborated with CSIRO to launch Digital Careers to engage with young people and encourage them to consider a career in technology.

Using our propriety software we mapped student personalities to occupations in technology. We know people cluster in careers that match their personalities and this project was particularly interesting because to map digital careers we needed to understand what each one does and what qualities are required by the person doing the job.

As you know, technology jobs are being created and redefined all the time, so we used technology recruitment specialists whose job it is to recruit people into the tech industry to define careers we recommend.

The final report is impressive and matches personality types to careers. CSIRO Digital Careers is available free of charge.”

Apprenticeships

Last week the Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN held an online Apprenticeship/traineeship evening. It contained a lot of useful information for students and parents across a number of different industries. Students and parents can watch anytime by clicking the following link, https://vimeo.com/624992227

Four steps to finding an apprenticeship or traineeship
Australian Apprenticeships Pathways has developed a fantastic four-step process for students to follow when seeking an apprenticeship or traineeship, http://bit.ly/39yUYmQ

Australian Apprenticeships Pathways (AAP)
This website contains fantastic resources for young people interested in pursuing a professional trade or traineeship. Some of the resources include:
•  Job and training descriptions
•  Career interest explorer
•  Job pathway charts
•  Information on apprenticeships and school-based apprenticeships
•  Literacy and numeracy quizzes for different industries such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical and hairdressing.
To explore the website go to, http://bit.ly/3aUtxnC

Focus on VET Pathways

Vocational education and training (VET) includes traineeships, apprenticeships and TAFE study. Four out of five parents report that they would prefer their child to go to university than study VET, http://bit.ly/2vPBkPF but it is crucial that both parents and students take the time to understand the VET sector and that a preference for just university study may in some cases limit a young person’s potential.

Between twenty and thirty per cent of young people in Australia drop out of or change their university course within the first year. Many young people do not even consider studying VET due to incorrect perceptions or through lack of understanding of the sector.

It is no secret that employers love job applicants who have TAFE qualifications, including those who graduate from a university with a degree and a VET qualification.

VET graduates are considered to have ‘job ready’ skills and in the future labour market in Australia with one in every two young people expected to complete a Bachelor degree, it is more important than ever to have diverse skills, industry experience and more than one qualification (for example, a Bachelor of Engineering with a TAFE Diploma in Project Management).

Did you know that several occupations predicted to have the most jobs growth by 2025 are in vocational training areas and in the industries with the most growth (for example, health and community services, construction, and accommodation and food services)? http://bit.ly/1mab7j7

Specific occupations with the biggest growth prediction include waiters, aged and disabled carers, general clerks, chefs, ICT support technicians, electricians, education aides, child carers, enrolled nurses, cleaners, to name a few.

Current skills shortages are in occupations such as automotive trades, food trades, construction trades, and building professionals.

A report, titled: “Perceptions Are Not Reality: myths, realities and the critical role of vocational education and training in Australia”, was released by Skilling Australia Foundation. It revealed the following:
•  VET graduates earn wages comparable to, if not exceeding, that of university graduates.
•  VET graduates have a higher employment rate than university undergraduates. More than seventy-eight per cent of VET graduates are employed after training.
•  VET courses have adapted more readily to changing workforce needs.

There are some occupations that require a university degree (such as: medicine, social work, law).

It is advisable that students consider undertaking VET study during their gap year (a gap year traineeship or TAFE course) and concurrently with their university studies (if time permits).

Other benefits of TAFE courses include:
•  Higher level courses (such as a Diploma) can provide a direct pathway into university courses with credit.
•  Can give you the opportunity to trial an industry or career area before you commit to university study.
•  Can give you a qualification you can use to gain part-time work whilst undertaking university study.

Do you know you can study a huge range of vocational courses at TAFE?
TAFE provides students with the opportunity to:
•  Undertake applied learning.
•  Gain ‘industry ready’ experience.
•  Learn about industries and careers.
•  Obtain a qualification in a relatively short time frame.

The following are example courses you could consider:
Jane knows she loves working with people, has excellent written and verbal communication skills, is creative, loves thinking outside the box, is highly organised and enjoys solving problems. She explores the following TAFE courses:
•  Public Relations
•  Marketing
•  Advertising
•  Professional Writing and Editing
•  Broadcast Journalism
•  Liberal Arts
•  Library and Information Services

Sheridan loves sciences and health and is considering working in rehabilitation, medical sciences or allied health in the future. She explores the following courses:
•  Dental Technology
•  Nursing
•  Massage and Myotherapy
•  Allied Health Assistance
•  Laboratory Technology
•  Pathology Collection

Paul knows he loves helping people and that he would like to work in counselling, case management or human services in the future. He explores the following courses:
•  Community Services
•  Youth Work
•  Disability Services
•  Mental Health
•  Alcohol and other Drugs
•  Aged Care

Victorian Skills Gateway website, www.skills.vic.gov.au/s/
TAFE NSW, http://bit.ly/1mgtM05

It is important to note that many courses have optional or compulsory information sessions that run between now and the end of the year. You will need to ensure that you attend these sessions and also fulfil any portfolio or selection task requirements.
