Welcome back everyone to an exciting new year of Careers!

It is never too early to start thinking about career ideas, researching your options, developing a career action plan or simply having a discussion with your Career Adviser.

If you are in Year 12, it is essential that you discuss your options with the key people in your life as soon as possible.

Have no idea what you would like to do when you leave school?  No stress!  Do not delay seeing your Career Adviser – now is the perfect time.  Not sure what to say?  Do not worry it is their job to guide you and open up possibilities you may not have considered before.

As a starting point, if you are interested in studying at university or TAFE in the future, it is important you attend open days and plan out your course interests early.

If you are interested in pursuing a traineeship or apprenticeship pathway, it is important that you gain as much industry experience as possible.  You can undertake work experience once you turn fifteen years old.

Seeing your Career Adviser early in the year is important to ensure you can get organised early and to be able to start making links with local employers.

Please read the fortnightly Careers News each week to ensure you keep up to date with upcoming career events and key dates.  Happy reading!

What does a Meteorologist do?

According to The Good Careers Guide, a meteorologist forecasts the weather and studies the atmosphere to improve the understanding of climate.  Some of the duties of a meteorologist include:
•  Analysing and interpreting surface, upper-level and other measurements (including satellite images and other remote sensing data about atmospheric conditions).
•  Prepare weather forecasts for the public as well as specific users such as aviation, marine, defence and emergency services.
•  Issue warnings for cyclones, storms, gales, floods, frosts and fire danger.
•  Study climate and identify climatic change.
•  Work with physicists and engineers to develop observation equipment and distribute information on topics such as air pollution.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is the major employer of meteorologists.  A few positions are occasionally available in private companies, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), universities and state or territory government bodies (mainly environmental agencies).  Most meteorologists are employed in capital cities but some are employed at major airports and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) bases outside capital cities and further afield (Antarctica, for meteorological consultants and practitioners who provide a private consultancy service to engineers and architects.

To become a meteorologist, students usually have to study Atmospheric Science, Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Mathematics and statistics, Ocean and Climate Sciences or Physics at university.  To get into these courses, students usually need to gain their VCE and have studied subjects such as English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth and Environmental Science, and Physics.  Universities have different prerequisites, so students are encouraged to browse university websites to find out more.  A Bachelor of Science is often the recommended course to get into studies in atmospheric science.

Skills Spiderweb

Different jobs need different skills.  The Skills Spiderweb shows 12 skills that are common across many jobs.  The size of the web shows the level of skill or expertise workers usually need to perform well in their job.  So, the larger the web, the higher the skill level.
Students are encouraged to visit Skills Spiderweb and play with the little drop-down tab and explore the many jobs listed.  Students can learn more about the skills required for particular jobs.  Visit,  Skills Spiderweb
