Traralgon Junior School

From the Head of Traralgon Junior School,
Mrs Gwen Hunter.

Dear Parents,

Great to see you all back for Term 2.  I trust that you had a safe and happy holiday and that you did not eat too many Easter eggs!

As always there are many things going on this term, so please keep your eye on the term calendar and dates.  We will continue to add reminders to this Grammarian as best as we possibly can.

INFORMATION SESSIONS AND TOURS
You might start to see signage around the school and community about our upcoming Information Sessions and School Tours.  These will be happening on Wednesday 15 May and we would love you to tell any friends and family to come along and have a look.
There will be an Information Session specifically for prospective Prep 2020 parents at 9:30 am, School Tours from 2:30 to 6:30 pm where classrooms will be alive with activities and finally our general information session at 7:00 pm for any families either with multiple siblings or families with students other than Prep.

Please spread the word to make this day a great success!

MOTHER’S DAY STALL
Thanks to our FOSP team of volunteers, our annual Mother’s Day Stall will be running next Friday 10 May between 9:00 am and 11:00 am in the STEAM Room.  Students can bring up to $5 to spend and each class will have a specific time to go and browse the fantastic items that are on offer.  Thanks again go out to the wonderful volunteers that make these events possible for our students.

ASSEMBLIES THIS TERM
It was fabulous to have Prep S show us what they have been working on in their classroom this term.  We are going to continue having classes show us what is going on in their rooms most weeks.  Come along to see your child present at assembly.

These are the classes that will present for the rest of this term:
Monday 13 May: 2C
Monday 20 May: ELC, Koala Group (2:30 pm start)
Monday 27 May: 4S
Monday 3 June: 3CD

CARPARK
Thank you very much to the whole community for accommodating the changes to the carpark.  It seems from most accounts, that it has made a positive difference.  Please let me or Carlie know if you have any other feedback.  Other than that, I still urge you to SLOW DOWN please.  There are a few cars that slow down over the speed hump but then accelerate off at a cracking pace after it.  Bear in mind that it is 10km/h (walking pace) all the way through the carpark.  Thank you.

UNIFORM
Please remember that next week all students must be wearing the formal winter uniform, including blazer.  Boys may wear their navy shorts if they choose to.  I remind parents of the email sent last term, that referred to girls wearing grey formal pants, this is now also an option instead of the school pinafore or skirt, but with that decision it will also be necessary to wear lace up shoes to suit.  Please remember to refer to our uniform, jewellery and hairstyle requirements on pages 12 and 13 of our student diaries, which outline our expectations regarding these important aspects of our school.

BEFORE SCHOOL CARE
Before School Care is up and running, starting at 6:45 am every day of the week.  Come and join Sophie and her helpers for a fabulous start to the day.  Before School Care includes a healthy breakfast and some great activities to get the day going on a positive note.  Students will stay in Before School Care until 8:45 am which is when teacher supervision at school begins.  Come and try it out!

LIBRARY NEWS

On Monday 29 April the Traralgon Junior School Library hosted a visit from the author and illustrator Adam Wallace.  Adam has about twenty published books to his name but, as he explained to the students, he has written more like two thousand as he has written every day for the past twenty years no matter what else he may be doing – what an inspiration!
Adam entertained the students from Years 2, 4, 5 and 6 with hilarious stories of things that have happened to him (stepping on a baby!… and breaking his finger in the toilet!) and explained how he goes about exaggerating real events so that the story is laugh out loud funny!  Adam demonstrated how to draw some of his illustrations and then by adding small details, how to make each picture an original.

Some comments from the students:
“He is the funniest, craziest, cleverest and most exaggerating person in the whole world!”  Ryder Comben
“I liked it when he made us draw with our eyes closed.”  Kallan Jones

If students still want to buy one of Adam’s books they are available from Lamont Books at www.lamontauthors.com.au and select ‘buy our authors’ books’ until Friday.

DONATE A DICTIONARY

In the first week of mid-semester holidays, ten Warragul and Traralgon Secondary students together with teachers Andrea Heard and Kirsten Enders, will be visiting East Timor.

One of the highlights is visiting the village school in Ponilala, built with money raised by St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School.  We are hoping on the upcoming visit to present each student in the school with an English/Tetum dictionary.  Each dictionary costs $5 and we have approximately one hundred and fifty to buy.

We are hoping that students or families from the school could donate $5 to buy a dictionary for a Timorese student.  A nameplate will be placed inside each dictionary noting that the dictionary was a gift and naming the family/student who donated it.  If you would like to provide a family/student photo, this could also be attached to the dictionary.

If you would like to donate, please either email Andrea Heard at aaheard@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au or Kirsten Enders at kenders@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au or complete the attached form with your money and drop it to either Traralgon Secondary Student Services or Warragul Secondary Student Services.

Thank you for your support.

From the Head of Traralgon Secondary School,
Mr Stephen Klemke.

SEISA Music
I had the pleasure of attending the recent SEISA Music concert at Beaconhills College, Pakenham and what a concert!  To hear the power of a two hundred strong Orchestra and Choir is quite something.  Lachlan Wilson had the honour to be invited to represent our school as a soloist and delivered his usual accomplished performance.  The range and quality of performances was quite something.  Thank you to Mr Nathan Byrne for organising the day and congratulations to all students who participated.

Thank You to our Local Fire Fighters
At our last assembly we had the pleasure of the CFA attending.  In attendance was: Rowan Day – Moe Fire Brigade Volunteer, Commander Chris Bourne, Traralgon Fire Station staff – Qualified Fire Fighter Ben Griffiths and Leading Fire Fighter Scott Pollerd and Carolyn Bailey – Community Engagement Coordinator.  As a school we were able to thank them for their service to our community and pass on the $663.30 that we raised at the recent casual clothes day.  The money will be split between the Yinnar and Yinnar South Fire Brigades.  We also appreciated Rowan talking to our school about his reasons for volunteering and the personal gains he has made in doing so.

Members of the CFA with Mr Herbert.

ANZAC Day
Thank you to our school captains, Alessio Fenech and Isabella Watts for representing our school at the local ANZAC Day service, laying wreaths on behalf of our school.  Ashlee Jennings was the invited vocalist and we were most impressed as she sang beautifully.  She performed both the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems as well as two hymns.  It was also pleasing to see many members of our school participating as they represented a variety of community organisations.  To anyone who has not attended, it is well worth considering.  Traralgon puts on a most impressive and moving tribute to our service men and women.

Secondary and Junior School Captains at the local cenotaph.

NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2019 for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday 14 May, Wednesday 15 May and Thursday 16 May 2019.  NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.  The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement.

All students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests.  During test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days.  These students may undertake catch-up tests on the days in the test week after the scheduled test, up to and including Friday 17 May 2019.

Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks.  Large print, braille and black and white versions of the tests are available for students that require them.  Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year.  If your child is eligible for support due to disability or an exemption, you should discuss this with his/her teacher prior to the tests.  Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer.  This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the Principal.  If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a Student Withdrawal form.  These forms are available at the school.

Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report.  The report will describe your child’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.  The report will also show how your child performed in relation to national minimum standards.  These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia.

I am confident that the information you receive as a result of your child’s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping you to assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy.

For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au

Warragul Junior School

From the Head of Warragul Junior School,
Mr Rowan van Raay.

It sure has been a busy few weeks in the Junior School, especially with Week 1 being so short due to Easter Monday and ANZAC Day.

Have you visited MyStPauls lately to see what we have been up to?  There is a lot of general information for families on our Warragul Junior School parent information page and more specific information and updates on Year Level pages (ELC to Year 6).  This is a great way to keep up to date with what your child/ren are doing at school.   Visit MyStPauls at https://my.stpaulsags.vic.edu.au and login using your family login details.  If you have misplaced these, please contact IT Support via itsupport@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au and they will issue you with new login details.  These pages are updated each fortnight.

Congratulations to the following students who have been elected as SRC Reps for Term 2:  Year 3 – Lily Wilson, Charlotte Horgan, Oscar Vale and Shae Staben, Year 4 – Poppy Cumming, Isabel Rowe, Lachlan Rosato and Emma Barter, Year 5 – Brooke Robinson, Flynn Smith, Stevie Madden and Benjamin Jilbert, Year 6 – Zoe Caris, Megen Cooper, Mathieson Moonen, Damian Leslie, Hugh McKinley and Ava Foltin.

We also congratulate Kade Cannon, Tarrant Cannon, Luke Callewaert, Daniel Callewaert, Shae Nippers and Thomas Halloran-Lavelle who represented St Paul’s and competed at the State Swimming Championships at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre recently.  This is a wonderful achievement and they should all be proud of their efforts.

Our Year 5 students ventured to Lady Northcote Camp at Bacchus Marsh this week.  Students enjoyed camp adventure activities throughout their stay.  The campers also watched ‘Blood on the Southern Cross’ after their day at Sovereign Hill yesterday.  Thanks to Miss McGrath, Mr Beamish, Mrs Leighton and Mr Barkla for organising and attending the camp.  Our Year 6s head off on their camp next week and we wish them a week full of adventure and fun.

Our FOSTA parent group will also be holding a Mother’s Day Stall on Friday 10 May.  There will be gifts available from $1.00 to $10.00 and cards for 50c and students should bring a bag to take their gifts home in.  Students should bring their money early next week as there will be no ‘IOUs’.  I would like to thank Mrs Leighton and the parent helpers who have organised the stall.

School Photos: Family and Junior School Photos will be taken on Friday 17 May.  We plan to take the family photos first, beginning at 8:30 am in the Junior School Gymnasium to accommodate students coming from the ELC and Secondary School (sibling forms have been sent home or are available from the Junior School Office).  Could I ask that parents let their children know if they are having a family photo so they know to go down to the gym first thing.  Students in Years 3 to 6 will be required to be in full winter uniform (including blazer).  Years 5 and 6 students will change into their sports uniform after their photo, ready for sport after recess.

Could I please remind all parents to not double park in Maple Way (particularly the end of the court near the entry to the school) so our neighbours have easy access to their driveway.  All parents and children should be using the zebra crossings when crossing the road and ask that you are mindful that the 10km/h speed limit applies at all times when travelling through our school grounds.

Our Before School Care program has commenced and I ask parents interested in either Before or After School Care to visit the Camp Australia website www.campaustralia.com.au or contact their Customer Service team on 1300 105 343 to register your child/ren.   Further information can be found later in this newsletter.

A reminder that all Years 3 to 6 students should be wearing the winter uniform, including blazer from the beginning of next week.  Boys may wear either long pants or shorts with their winter uniform, whilst girls now also have the opportunity to wear long pants.  The spray jacket may be worn to and from school when students are wearing their sports uniform, however, it should not be worn with the winter uniform.  A reminder that sports socks should be white (without logos).

Please note that Friday 31 May is a student free day for the Warragul Junior School only.  ELC and Secondary School classes will run as normal.

Warragul Secondary School

From the Head of Warragul Secondary School,
Ms Laura Butterworth.

Welcome to Term 2 and after a strange week containing not one, but two public holidays, this week has finally restored school routines.  Last week, on the eve of ANZAC Day, we held our first ANZAC Service as a whole campus.  Each student from Prep at the Junior School through to Year 12 and all of the staff joined together for a moving service beside our Aleppo Pine, which is a descendant of the Lone Pine of Gallipoli.  Many in our community may not realise that an Aleppo Pine was donated to St Paul’s Warragul Campus by Legacy on behalf of the family of a local ANZAC Soldier many years ago.  It was planted and has grown to a level of maturity that now allows us to hold our ANZAC and Remembrance Day Services beside it.  The Lone Pine is significant in our history because when Australian troops arrived at the Gallipoli Peninsula in April 1915, there was a ridge on which a solitary pine stood.  Turkish troops had felled the area to fortify their trenches and the single pine stood out on the horizon.  Soldiers used it as a reference point and the area became known as Lone Pine.  Students stood side by side as our Prefects led the service last week to honour the ANZAC legacy.

2019 Presentation Ball
The annual Presentation Ball was held at Lardner Park on Saturday 27 April with the theme of an ‘Enchanted Evening Under the Stars’ and what a wonderful evening it was.  I would like to congratulate all of our students who participated for their commitment to the event and the way in which they conducted themselves on the night, they were outstanding.  I would also like to thank all of those involved for creating such a special evening for our students including event organiser, Ms Christie Bransgrove and the parent committee who decorated the venue beautifully on the night.  There were so many others who contributed in many ways and we extend our warmest thank you to those people as well.

Term 2 Examination Period
The Term 2 examination period begins during Week 6 for our Year 11 students and during Week 7 for our Years 9 and 10 students.  Considering Monday marks the start of Week 3 it is important that students in these year levels are including revision of Term 1 content and current content in their weekly homework and study schedules.  The examination timetable will be released to students through the Head of Year during pastoral time when it is finalised.

The General Achievement Test (GAT)
On Thursday 23 May all students studying a Unit 3 and 4 subject in 2019 will sit the practice General Achievement Test (GAT) at school followed by the actual GAT at 10:00 am on 12 June.  For those families new to the GAT it is “a test of general knowledge and skills in:
•  written communication
•  mathematics, science and technology
•  humanities, the arts and social sciences.

These areas are very broad.

Each represents a body of general knowledge and skills that students are likely to have built up through their school years.

Because it is a general test, no special study is required for the GAT.  Students will already have done preparation for the GAT in past study of subjects like English, Mathematics, Science and History, where they have built up general knowledge and skills in writing, numeracy and reasoning.  These are the knowledge and skills that will be tested.

Students can get a good idea of the questions by looking at previous GAT papers.  Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these questions and note that all the information needed to work out the right answer is provided.”

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A ST PAUL’S COMPANY MEMBER OR BOARD DIRECTOR?

MEMBERSHIP OF COMPANY

Are you aware parents are able to become members of the St Paul’s School Company?

At present there are over sixty members of the School’s Company.  Applying for membership involves completing an application form and submitting a fee of $20.00.  Continued membership involves renewing your membership once a year and paying an ongoing annual fee of $20.00.

Company membership entitles the member to attend the School’s Annual General Meeting in May each year and also to cast a vote in the event of an election of Directors to the School Board.

Persons interested in applying for new membership of the Company can obtain an Application for Company Membership form from the St Paul’s website or by contacting Carol Reid via email creid@stpaulsags.vic.edu.au

Applications should be received by 23 April 2019 for consideration at the April Board Meeting in preparation of this year’s Annual General Meeting.  Later applications can also be considered but must be received by 21 May 2019 to be able to attend the Annual General Meeting.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – 29 MAY 2019

The Annual General Meeting of St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School is to be held on Wednesday 29 May 2019 at the Warragul Campus commencing at 5:30 pm for members of the Company.

NAPLAN TESTS

CITY EXPERIENCE DAY

We were very impressed with all the Year 9 Students who attended the second City Experience Day last Friday!  Luckily, Melbourne escaped the worst of the weather and we were treated to a sunny afternoon.  The students were well mannered, respectful towards members of the public and attentive during the two organised tours.  The students visited the Melbourne Museum to explore the ‘First People’ exhibition.  The second tour was to the State Library of Victoria – what a spectacular architectural marvel in the heart of Melbourne!  The students were treated to a visit of the balconies, the Redmond Barry reading room and explored the early settlement of Melbourne through paintings and relics.  We look forward to our next City Experience Day on 24 May!

SPORT NEWS

SEISA Surf
Last Wednesday 24 April, six students ventured down to Forrest Caves for the annual SEISA Surf contest.  Brilliantly led by Mr Kevin Andrews and Mr Bernard Laverty, the two girls and four boys climbed over the sand dunes under the overcast rain clouds to represent the School with an air of great sportsmanship.  Enjoying a break from daily routine, they competed against Gippsland Grammar, Beaconhills Pakenham and Berwick, and local surfers from Newhaven College in the annual surf carnival.  The weather conditions on the day were not great but that did not dampen the team’s enthusiasm as they surfed a clean two to three foot swell breaking both left and right along the open spans of pristine beach.  In a heat format, St Paul’s surfers pulled on their rashies and were pinned against other surfers from neighbouring schools.  With only twenty minutes per heat, each surfer had the opportunity to catch unlimited waves with their two highest scores being tallied towards their total heat score.  Oliver Dillon and Kyle Hannath were both able to put together strong performances and both advanced through to the finals held later in the day.  Although surfing strongly, Jeremy Hamilton, James Gourley, Lucy Connelly and Sienna Foltin were unfortunately put out of the contest in the earlier heats due to the tough opposition that they were up against.  Both Oliver and Kyle surfed their final well with Ollie placing fourth and Kyle placing sixth for their age group.  With conditions building throughout the day, everyone enjoyed the opportunity and were able to learn a thing or two from the locals of Newhaven as they tore up the waves.  Competing well, St Paul’s finished fifth overall and were collectively as a team, able to put together some strong surfing performances.  Team members are thankful for the opportunity and would like to thank Mr Andrews for his insightful coaching and welcome advice on all things surfing.

YEAR 12 JACKETS!

It was with great excitement on Wednesday 1 May when students received their Year 12 jackets.  There was a great enthusiasm in the common room and a sense of camaraderie among the group.  The jackets look very smart and will be an added bonus with the cooler weather upon us.  Enjoy this garment, remember that Year 12 jackets are not to be worn to either assembly or chapel.

MATHS SUPPORT SESSIONS

A Maths support session will be offered in Room 3 (Year 9 Centre) each Tuesday at the end of the school day.  This session will operate from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm and students are able to attend for all or part of each session as required.

Participants may use this session to get assistance with and complete homework tasks, seek an additional lesson on a particular Maths topic or simply work with other students who share a similar love of Mathematics with extension activities provided as required.  This session is primarily aimed at students from Years 10 to 12 although all Secondary School students are welcome to attend.  These sessions are additional to those already provided by teachers from the Maths Faculty which occur regularly at nominated lunchtimes.

No formal registration is required.  Students simply attend whenever they feel the need for some additional support or extension.

From the Principal

We are deeply saddened by the death of a member of our school community this week.  One of our Year 10 students has tragically passed away.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and friends, and all those affected.  May we all – students, staff and families – unite in mutual support and care at this time.

We pray for all whose lives have been touched by tragedy.
May they be provided with eternal comfort and strength.

For those who mourn, immerse them in your love
and lead them through this darkness into warmth and light.

For those who comfort, be in both the words they use
and all that’s left unspoken; fill each heart with love.  Amen.
