Traralgon Junior School

From the Head of Traralgon Junior School,
Mrs Gwen Hunter.

Dear Parents,

Here we are at the end of Term 1 already, time flies!  As always, we have had another incredibly busy time leading up to the Easter holidays.

PSTIs
It was lovely to see so many parents attending last week’s Parent Student Teacher Interviews, thank you for putting in the valuable time to your child’s education.  These interviews are always an important time for you to discuss progress, achievements and forward planning for your child for the term ahead.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
As you may have been aware, we have been trialling for the last two weeks a change in traffic flow in the top carpark of the Junior School and at the time of writing this newsletter it seems to be, from most accounts, quite a success.  With the goal of being able to allow traffic to exit the carpark more quickly, this has certainly been achieved with most cars having left within ten minutes of school finishing.  If you have any particular feedback for the school in regard to this change please either call into the office or email Carlie at cjones@stpaulsags.vic.ed.au.  Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding with this change.

UNIFORM
For the first two weeks of Term 2, students may wear either the summer or formal (winter) uniform as we transition from the warmer days to the cooler days.   From Week 3 (Monday 6 May), students must wear the formal uniform, including the blazer (boys may wear shorts).   I remind parents of the email sent recently that referred to girls wearing grey formal pants, this is now also an option instead of the school pinafore or skirt, but with that decision it will also be necessary to wear lace up shoes to suit.  Please remember to refer to our uniform, jewellery and hairstyle requirements on pages 12 and 13 of our student diary, which outlines our expectations with regard to these important aspects of our school.

BEFORE SCHOOL CARE
A final reminder that a Before School Care program will start from the beginning of Term 2.  I hope that parents will utilise and support this service.  Parents interested are asked to visit the Camp Australia website www.campaustralia.com.au or contact their Customer Service team on 1300 105 343 to register your child/ren.

DISTRICT ATHLETICS
On Wednesday 20 March, forty-four St Paul’s athletes competed in the annual District Athletics Carnival.  As a school we had students entered in a large range of events.  All forty-four athletes performed extremely well ending with two firsts, four seconds and eight thirds for the day.

From those successes we have five individual athletes moving on to the Division Carnival in Term 3 as well as a relay team.  Congratulations must go to everyone who participated and good luck to Morgan McConville: Discus, Kenuli Ganegoda: Triple Jump, James Farrar: Discus, Josh Bellingham: Shot Put, Fraser Smith: Triple Jump and the 11 year old girls 100 m relay team: Charli Elsum, Hannah Smith, Ruby Paulet and Claudia Buhagiar.

SWIMMING
Also, a huge CONGRATULATIONS must go to four successful swimmers who have qualified for the State Championships at MSAC on 24 April, these are: Brody Cargill, Ella Warner, Abby Paulet and Morgan McConville. We wish you all the best in your events on the day!

HOT CROSS BUN ORDERS
Thank you and congratulations once again must go out to our wonderful FOSP team for coordinating the Hot Cross Bun Orders this year.  Thanks also to Bakers Delight for their generosity with the $2 donation that went back to the school for each pack of buns ordered.  If you did not manage to get an order in, you can still go along to Bakers Delight in Traralgon, mention that you are from St Paul’s when you buy your bread and hot cross buns and five percent of your purchase will be donated back to the School.

ASSEMBLY TIMES FOR TERM 2
Most of next terms’ assemblies will continue to run from 2:50 to 3:20 pm.
The only exceptions to this will be when the ELC join us, due to their earlier finish time.
These dates and times are:
Monday 29 April – 2:30 to 3:20 pm
Monday 20 May – 2:30 to 3:20 pm
Monday 17 June – 2:30 to 3:20 pm

Wishing you all the very best for a safe and enjoyable holiday.  Please take the time to rest, spend some quality time with one another and regenerate your batteries ready for Term 2.
Please note that the Junior School Office will be closed from Monday 8 April to Monday 22 April inclusive, over the Easter break with Term 2 commencing on Tuesday 23 April.

SCIENCE WEEK

Imagine a week when science is on the timetable every day!  Activities which explored the theme of light and colour were organised for the whole of Traralgon Junior School.  All classes had the opportunity to explore how lenses, prisms and mirrors work.  Students made Newton’s colour discs and spun them to see how white can be made from all the colours of the spectrum.  Periscopes were made to show how mirrors can be used to see over obstacles.  During recess and lunch, Year 6 students demonstrated Science experiments to younger students.  The anatomy of the eye was investigated to understand how we see things.  Science and rainbow colours adorned the Art room and colourful stories were used in Library lessons.  Even in Physical Education the students analysed the performance of Usain Bolt to see if he could run at the speed of light.  What an exciting week!

Mr Stephen Klemke.

End of term 1
As this is the last Grammarian before the holidays may I take the opportunity to wish all families a happy and safe Easter.  The Secondary School Office will only be open from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm on the last Wednesday before Easter, Wednesday 17 April.

House Tug of War
Beautiful weather greeted this year’s House Tug of War event.  It is always a morning full of house spirit and competitive fun and this year was no exception.  I was particularly impressed with the effort of our Deputy House Captains.  It is never easy to make sure everyone gets a fair turn on the rope in the heat of Tug Of War battle and I thought they did that marvellously.  Congratulations!  Congratulations also to Franklin on their victory.  There was some controversy over the teachers versus students event!  While the teachers eventually won it was claimed that the Head of School was too focused on barracking for the teachers and missed that during the contest the students had in fact reached the victory mark.  It is true that this criticism is possibly valid and at the risk of a staff revolt, I officially declare the students the victors.

Franklin celebrate their victory.

Junior SEISA Trials
Last Thursday we hosted the combined Junior SEISA trials with our Warragul Campus and I had the pleasure of being involved in the soccer trials.  It is never easy to select fifteen boys from twenty-nine, however it was a pleasure to see the two campuses combine and work and compete so harmoniously.  Congratulations to those who made the Junior SEISA teams.  To those who missed out I was impressed by the manner in which you accepted what must have been disappointing news.

Year 7 2020 Information Evening and Secondary School Tours
If you know anyone who might be interested in attending the Secondary School in 2020 please be encouraged to mention our Year 7 2020 Information Evening and Secondary School Tours.

Tours conducted by our Year 9 Tour Guides will commence at 2:00 pm, supper will be supplied by our Catering students, music performed by our Performing Arts students and an information session will commence at 7:00 pm.

SPORT NEWS

Combined House Athletics
We held our combined House Athletics at the Newborough track a couple of weeks ago.  The early morning started with a slight mist of drizzle that lasted until the students arrived at the venue.  Running conditions were ideal and some records were broken in both the track and field events.  Our Year 12s were all dressed up in characters and started their day off with the sack race in novelties.  It was a very tight competition amongst the houses and it all came down to the house participation points.  Any students who helped on the day were awarded a house point which contributes to the overall result.  Paterson House were the victors by a margin of eight points from Chisholm.
Final standings:  Paterson 1130;  Chisholm 1122;  Franklin 1120.5;  Gilmore 1112.5;  Lalor 1042.5;  Monash 1020.5.
Ashley Nicholes broke the discus record which was held by Clayton Monacella since 2013.  The previous record was 26.54 and Ashley threw 27.38.

SEISA Intermediate Cricket
Our SEISA Cricket team had a very successful round robin this term.  They were undefeated and were favourites coming into the final.  They played against Beaconhills Berwick.  St Paul’s batted first and made one hundred and forty-two runs and then they bowled Berwick out for thirty-eight runs.  Mr Herbert presented the team with their banner after the game.  Congratulations to all the boys, in particular, Sam Treasure, Mitchell Bellingham, Mick Edgar, Xavier Haberl and coach Jason Addison.

SEISA Intermediate Boys Cricket.

House Tug of War
We held our annual House Tug Of War last Thursday.  Each house competes against each other first before semi-finals are done to determine who makes it into the final.  There were so many great tussles which saw Gilmore and Franklin face off in the final.  Gilmore has won this event for the past four years and Franklin House wanted that memento to change.  After an epic final, Franklin House came out the victors.  Congratulations to the Tanner Pyle (House Deputy Leader) and his team.

From the Chaplain

THE PARABLE OF THE INSECURE HOT CROSS BUN

It seems that hot cross buns have changed.  For a long time, the traditional hot cross bun was a simple sweet yeasted bun, maybe with some currants or raisins in it but, most importantly, marked on top with the shape of a cross. In recent times the humble hot cross bun has branched out.  Now you can get any number of ‘flavours’ from ‘Banana and Caramel’ to ‘Raspberry and White Chocolate’.  One bakery advertises twenty-five different flavours of hot cross bun!

I can not help but wonder how this happened.  Perhaps after centuries of living the contented life of a simple cross-adorned yeast bun, the voices of our culture started to take effect.  “You can be whatever you want to be!”  “If you can dream it, you can do it!”  And the hot cross bun looked around, saw all these other interesting baked goods and started to think “maybe I am not good enough as I am”.  And so, driven by insecurity and lost in a sea of choice, the hot cross bun desperately tries to reinvent itself striving to ‘be all it can be’.  It constantly compares itself to the other fancy baked items around it.  Forgetting all the while the one simple thing that makes it who it is.  And it is not just the buns.  I suspect we do the exact same thing.  Surrounded by choice and bombarded by messages telling us to ‘be true to ourselves’ we appear to be more insecure about our identities than ever before.  It is perhaps no wonder that anxiety is so commonplace with so much pressure on every individual to make it all happen?  And when we are surrounded by photoshopped, filtered and media-massaged images of the apparent success of others, is it any wonder that so many struggle with the weight of depression?  We live in a society that sets the bar at an unrealistic height and then brutally shames us every time we fail to clear it.

It is here that the hot cross bun has a message for us.  An Easter message.  Sadly, too often people hear the Christian message as yet another judgement.  Another voice saying you are not good enough.  We Christians have not always been good at communicating the profound hope that Jesus offers.  But consider the words of Jesus himself, “God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them!” (John 3:17).  The message is not, “you are fine as you are” because then we would not need saving (and do we really think the world is fine as it is?).  But neither is the response condemnation.  Which brings me back to the hot cross bun.  You see, no matter what flavour of bun we come up with, the thing that makes it a hot cross bun is the cross that covers it!  And that is the hope that Jesus offers – life, identity, value based not on our own efforts but on what God has done for us.  Whether we are choc chip, cinnamon or Turkish delight flavoured; whether we feel fresh and full of life or dry and crumbling under pressure, it is the cross that covers us that makes us who we are.

May your Easter break be one of rest, restoration and blessing.

Senior Chaplain

STUDENT CHRISTIAN RETREAT

On 22 and 23 March, eight students from both Warragul and Traralgon Secondary School Campuses spent time together on a Christian Retreat weekend.  This was an amazing opportunity for us to relax and get to know other Christian students from the school.  In a beautiful setting overlooking the water at Illawong Lodge in Robertson’s Beach , the small group became very close and were able share our personal faith experiences, opinions and enjoy many biblical discussions.  In Proverbs (27:17) it states that “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another”.  The weekend spent together has formed an amazing community amongst the Christian students of St Paul’s who will continue to grow together at and away from school.

Warragul Junior School

From the Head of Warragul Junior School,
Mr Rowan van Raay.

It is hard to believe we have come to the end of Term 1 and we are heading into our holidays and Easter break.  We wish Mrs Davies and Miss Begg a restful break as they take some well-deserved long service leave next term.  Mrs Leighton and Mrs Bramstedt will fill in for Mrs Davies while Mrs Denton will teach Year 4B.

My thanks to the Year 6 students who assisted on Open Day last Saturday.  We had students conducting tours, working in the STEM centre with Ms Rapinett and with Mrs Bristowe in the Art room.  The weather was a little wet at times, however, this did not dampen the students’ enthusiasm as they proudly spoke about our Junior School to our visitors.  I also thank the staff who assisted on the day.

Parent Teacher Interviews were conducted this week and my thanks to staff and families who met to discuss progress at this stage of the year.  If any families were not able to meet this week, please ensure you make a time with your child’s teacher early next term to meet at a mutually agreeable time.

I am happy to announce that due to demand, we will be introducing a third Year 5 class next year.  This is wonderful news for our current Year 4 cohort.

Parents parking in Maple Way and Cedar Place:  Could I please remind parents not to block residents’ access to their property.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

A reminder that during Weeks 1 and 2 next term, Years 3 to 6 students may wear either the summer or winter uniform as we transition from the warmer days to the cooler days.  From Week 3 (Monday 6 May), students must wear the winter uniform, including the blazer (boys may wear shorts).  As per the announcement from Ms Sweeney recently via email, girls in Years 3 to 6 will now be able to wear winter grey pants as part of their formal uniform.  The Junior School girls’ pants are the same fabric and style as the Junior School boys’ winter pants.  Junior School girls who may have outgrown the cut of the Junior School pants may purchase the Secondary School pants.  Please refer to Ms Sweeney’s email for further details.

Before School Care Program:  This will start from the beginning of Term 2.  Parents interested should visit the Camp Australia website www.campaustralia.com.au or contact their Customer Service team on 1300 105 343 to register their child/ren.  Further information can also be found later in this newsletter.

Please find below the Junior School office hours over the upcoming holidays.  Please note in particular that the Junior School office will be closed from Friday 19 April to Monday 22 April inclusive over the Easter break with Term 2 commencing the next day.

Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 April: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Wednesday 10 to Tuesday 16 April: CLOSED
Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 April: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Friday 19 to Monday 22 April:  CLOSED

Term 2 commences on Tuesday 23 April.

As Term 1 comes to a close, I wish everyone a safe and relaxing break and hope families enjoy some ‘down time’ over the Easter break.  For families heading away, please travel safely and I look forward to seeing you next term.

Warragul Secondary School

From the Head of Warragul Secondary School,
Ms Laura Butterworth.

A very busy Term 1 has come to an end today and I know the staff and students at Warragul Secondary School are looking forward to a well deserved break.  The last two weeks have been especially busy with our Year 7 2020 Information Evening and Open Day.  I would like to thank the Tour Guides, Prefects, Musicians, Catering Club members and the other students who volunteered their time on both occasions to support and represent our school.  As always, they were wonderful ambassadors and our many visitors were impressed by their varied talents.  I would also like to thank all of our staff for their organisation and attendance at these events.

We also held our Parent Student Teacher Interviews during the last two weeks of this term and officially opened our new Year 9 Centre with the help of The Right Reverend Dr Richard Treloar, Bishop of Gippsland and Ms Harriett Shing MLC, the Member for Eastern Victoria.  It was lovely to see many founding families and past families and staff in attendance for this auspicious occasion.

Term 2 begins in an unusual fashion due to the Easter Monday Public Holiday falling on 22 April.  Students will officially return on Tuesday 23 April but please note that Thursday 25 April of the same week is ANZAC Day Public Holiday.  Our Year 9 parents and guardians should also mark on their calendar that these students will be attending a City Experience Day on Friday 26 April and our Year 11 cohort will have heir final Presentation Ball practice at Lardner Park on this day as well.

I would like to wish all of our families a safe and relaxing holiday break and look forward to seeing our students return in full winter uniform for Term 2.

Traffic reminder
Our Bowen Street Crossing Supervisor has reported a couple of instances of late where drivers who are exiting the Secondary School carpark have taken off quickly and been unable to stop an appropriate distance from the school crossing.  Can we please urge parents and guardians to be mindful of this and exit the carpark carefully.  The safety of our students and our Crossing Supervisor is of utmost importance to us and we would appreciate assistance with this.

Ms Laura Butterworth
Head of Warragul Secondary School

YEAR 8 CAMP

On 12 March, the Year 8s were lucky to experience a thrilling and adventurous Outdoor Education camp.  After the bus trip filled with lollies and jokes, the excited Year 8s began with a three hour hike with a well prepared hiking pack.  With legs aching and blood pumping, we were very happy for a break and time to set up our tents at Emu Bight Camp Ground.  We were so hungry and cooked ourselves dinner using woks and trangias.  Night struck and sleep came fast for our fatigued group.  Morning brought another hike to a ferry dock, where we relished a well-deserved lunch before travelling to the campsite via the ferry.  At Lakewood Park base camp, groups got to experience mountain biking, sailing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.  Mountain biking was surprisingly fun.  We listened to our instructor on how to properly do some fancy strokes for kayaking and then off we went, scooping up jellyfish along the way.  Stopping at a small island, we played some games and ate morning tea but were keen to get straight back into kayaking.  Stand-up paddle boarding was absolutely incredible!  The water was so perfect and wrestling on the boards was the best.  Raft building took a lot of teamwork and although none of the rafts really stayed together, it was fun.  Sailing was great but with very little wind we did not get far.  Our group put in lots of effort to complete the tasks set during the week and we had the best time ever!

From the Principal

As our first term draws to a close, I wish to express my thanks and gratitude to everyone who has contributed to a successful start to the 2019 school year.  The first ten weeks have been, as usual, full of many joys and successes, but not without the unavoidable moments of disappointment which are part of life.  After a term of hard work, I trust that the forthcoming holidays will provide well-deserved time for relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation.

On Monday 1 April, the new Year 9 Centre at Warragul was officially opened by The Right Reverend Dr Richard Treloar, Bishop of Gippsland and Ms Harriet Shing MLC, Member for Eastern Victoria.  The Bishop blessed and dedicated the new facility at a delightful gathering of guests, including our Mayor, state politicians, founding families, Board Directors and School Prefects.

On Thursday 28 March, St Paul’s competed in six Summer SEISA Sport finals.  This is a significant increase compared to recent years, partly because we are now competing as one school rather than two campuses.  From those six finals, we emerged with two Premierships: Intermediate/Senior Girls Softball and Intermediate Boys Cricket.  Congratulations to both winning teams and to all students who represented St Paul’s in SEISA Sport during Term 1.  On Tuesday 2 April, selection trials for Years 7 and 8 were conducted for the upcoming Junior Winter Sport season and we wish all these teams well for their Term 2 competitions.

I wish all students and families a safe, restful and enjoyable two weeks of school holidays.  We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday 23 April, after the four day Easter weekend.
