CAREERS NEWS
Welcome back to Semester 2 – a fun packed and busy time of the year for all students!
The end of this month sees the official start of Tertiary Open Days – universities, TAFEs and private providers. Students and families of Years 10, 11 and 12 in particular, are encouraged to plan to visit a variety of institutions to gain a ‘feel’ for a campus plus be able to research options for further study.
It is imperative that Year 12 students access this opportunity to help them decide just what it is they want to do! Even if a student does not have any idea, visiting an institution may help focus an area of interest!
Many students have no idea of ‘where to’ after Year 12 – and that can be a cause for anxiety for both students and their families… but all is not lost! Talking to as many people as you can will often spark ideas and interests that can be further explored. And by researching broad based courses such as Arts, Business and Science, gives students time at university or TAFE to find where their interests and skills really lie. There is so much out there that they are not aware of, take time to try, experience and explore!
One of the key things to remember is that it is not just the course that needs to ‘fit’ but also the institution and campus. Each will have a different ‘feel’ and appeal and this response should not be taken lightly; if you are not happy where you are studying, even the best course will be an issue!
Congratulations to the students who undertook Work Experience over the holidays. All reports were excellent and students gained wonderful insights in to life in the workforce of interest.
All Years 10, 11 and even Year 12 students (although it might be difficult for the September holiday period) are encouraged to consider this opportunity and get the green application forms in as soon as possible. The cut-off date to hand in request forms for the next round will be Monday 2 September.
I look forward to speaking to all Year 12 students and parents/guardians who wish to, as the VTAC application period begins in August. Please remember that no question is too small, so please contact me for assistance if required.

Post School Qualifications
Why is completing a vocational or higher education qualification after school so important?
According to the My Career Match website:
• Of the thirteen million jobs in Australia in 2020, eleven million (eighty-five per cent) will require a Certificate III or higher. Four million (thirty per cent) will require a Bachelor degree or higher.
• Many of the careers and jobs that are around today will disappear by the time students get their first job and many new careers will be created.

Gap Year in the Army
The Australian Defence Force Gap Year program provides an opportunity for young Australians who have finished Year 12 to experience military training and lifestyle whilst gaining new skills and pay over their Gap Year in the Army. You will earn more than $45,000, have subsidised accommodation and full medical and dental coverage.
The following roles still have spaces for applicants: Air Defence Operator, Driver and Warehouse Assistant. For information and to apply go to, https://bit.ly/32tiEG4
Currently in Year 12 and considering Tertiary Study?
Victorian courses: The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) processes course applications on behalf of participating higher education institutions. From Monday 5 August, you will be able to create a VTAC account and apply for vocational and higher education courses. VTAC has developed a series of resources to assist students with their applications.
The following are three examples:
• Website: The website and social media channels contain information about the application process, Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) and scholarships to name a few, www.vtac.edu.au/
• Instructional videos: Outline how to set up a VTAC account, how to search for courses and how the preference system works, http://bit.ly/2a9lzwg
• VTAC CourseSearch app: You can download the app from Google Play or the App Store.
Other states: Information and resources for other states can be accessed at the following websites:
• NSW/Canberra, www.uac.edu.au
• South Australia/Northern Territory, www.satac.edu.au/
• Queensland, www.qtac.edu.au/
• Western Australia, www.tisc.edu.au/
• Tasmania, www.utas.edu.au/
Note: Victorian students can apply for NSW/ACT courses via UAC from the 1 August.
Focus on Open Days
If you are considering studying at TAFE or university after school, it is crucial that you attend Open Days.
Throughout the year, vocational and tertiary institutions open their doors to the public and showcase their courses, accommodation, scholarships, pathway courses, student services and their ‘point of difference’.
At an Open Day, you will be able to:
• Get a feel for the culture of the campus
• Learn about courses and career options
• Undertake campus and accommodation tours led by current students
• Speak directly to student ambassadors and lecturers about the courses or careers you are interested in
• Compare the course area you are interested in at different institutions
• Learn about sports and societies you can join and be active in
• Get course counselling and guidance
• Attend information sessions and workshops
• Watch live demonstrations
• Listen to bands, eat lots of food, participate in activities and have fun!
Do not just pick a course at an institution without visiting the campus – you potentially will be spending several years studying there and spending tens of thousands of dollars on your course and accommodation. It is worth making the effort.
My Career Match has developed a fantastic guide to assist you to get the most out of Open Days and Career Expos. You can access the article at this link, https://bit.ly/2JgflLb
Suggested Open Day Questions
By now you should have identified institutions you would like to visit, found out their Open Day dates and downloaded their Open Day programs. Once you have the programs, make a list of the information sessions you would like to attend. If you have time, try and attend information sessions on topics like pathways, scholarships, accommodation and overseas exchange programs.
If you are unsure what to ask on the day, Victoria University has developed some questions you can ask:
• Are there any prerequisite subjects I need to study for this course?
• What study scores/ATAR do I need to achieve to get into this course?
• Do I need to attend an audition, have an interview or present a folio as part of the selection process?
• Are there any other ways into this course other than through a VTAC application?
• If I can not get into this course, is there a similar course at this institution I can apply for?
• Can I study majors and/or minors in this course?
• How many hours per week are spent in class and can I study part-time?
• Can I defer the course?
• What kind of jobs do graduates of this course generally get?
• Are there any scholarships available?
They have also developed a guide for parents. You can download the questions at this link, https://bit.ly/2XTCC9y
