CAREERS NEWS

view ARTICLE

The days of a ‘job for life’ are over – as all experts are telling us!  And along with that, new jobs of the future are being invented at a rapidly growing rate.  As parents and teachers we can only marvel at what our young people may be doing in the future!
There are jobs you may never have heard of: Snake Milker, Space Archaeologist, Mathematical Psychologist, Flavour Chemist – these are all real jobs!

In this week’s newsletter, there are links to some interesting websites to explore.

Also, there has been a lot in the news recently about jobs in Agriculture and that not enough young people are choosing this area as their career.  But ‘being on the land’ is not the only career in Agriculture and as this week’s information states, many jobs are in offices in the cities.  Agriculture and Agribusiness are careers of the future where as a nation, we need forward thinking and innovative people who will be able to feed our country, manage the environment and look after our natural resources.  Food will always be required and we need people who have the passion and commitment to contribute to work and careers in this area.

As we head into the mid-year break, students are encouraged to take some time to research courses and careers to help in planning their pathway for the future.  Subject selection will be upon us early next term and it pays to be informed about what subjects are required for particular courses and future careers.  Year 12 students should also be researching for their final applications for TAFE, universities and traineeships.  The VTAC application process opens in the first week of August – do not leave it until the last minute to gather the information required to make informed choices!

Vocational Education

Have you considered pursuing vocational education after school?  Research shows that four out of five parents would prefer their child to go to university after school over vocational education and that many young people and parents do not understand the benefits of vocational education and training for example: TAFE, apprenticeships and traineeships.

2017 Australian research suggests that:
·  Nine out of the ten top occupations predicted to have the most jobs growth are in vocational training areas
·  The median full-time income for a vocational education graduate is $56,000 vs $54,000 for someone with a bachelor degree
·  Nearly eight in ten vocational education graduates have a job soon after training versus about seven in ten university graduates
·  Nine in ten trade apprentices have jobs after finishing training
You can read the research report at this link, https://bit.ly/2l0YzlR

Most people in agriculture work full-time.  The demand for agricultural science graduates grew strongly over the past five years and around 5,000 job openings will be available by 2024, https://bit.ly/2HZWFel
There is also an ongoing demand for agricultural science graduates with economics and management training, https://bit.ly/2Ic3tYk  (source)

Experts are needed in the areas of:
·  Sustainable farming practices
·  Land management
·  Land conservation
·  Climate change practices
·  Food security
·  Agricultural research and policy making

Students can specialise in areas such as:

·  Animal and plant biotechnology
·  Catchment management
·  Climate change impacts

Unique teaching model at Victoria University

Victoria University (VU) is the first Australian university to use a ‘block’ model of learning, where you study one unit at a time rather than juggling several at once.  The VU Block Model offers you more one-on-one time with educators in an immersive, collaborative learning environment.  It develops your confidence and independence as a learner, setting you up for success in your degree and beyond.
You will study in short bursts, called blocks.  Each block focuses on one unit (subject) and is only four weeks long, with up to four days between blocks to relax and prepare for the next.  The year is broken up into ten four-week blocks: two semesters of four blocks each, plus two optional blocks over winter and summer.  If you miss a unit or need to repeat one, you can catch up over the winter and summer blocks.

The first unit you study is set.  It is a great introduction to your course that helps build the academic skills you will need to succeed.  If you start your course a bit late, the unit is also offered in block two.
The other seven units you will need to take in first year can then be studied in any order for most courses, to suit your work and life commitments.  According to the university, the retention rate and number of high distinctions has increased since implementing the model in 2018.  To learn about the model go to, https://bit.ly/2Izrgld
